starting OL for Michigan out for the App game

Unread post by moehler » Mon Jun 16, 2014 4:56 pm

small note I came across, the starting offensive tackle for Michigan will not play in the App game, got caught driving drunk and part of his punishment is to sit out the App game. He is a 6'8 308 lbs monster who started all 13 games last year. I know its a small thing, but they now have lost from last years team 3 starters, 2 to the NFL and this guy. These 3 were their top players on the line that wasn't very good last year, and considered the weakness on the team. Starting to have a good feeling that they probably will not dominate us on the line, maybe we can even push them around alittle bit.

They will still outsize us by a wide margin on the lines. I doubt we will be pushing around a big10 school. Now where is could help is on blitz recognition due to inexperience. But to think we will push a big10 oline around is pretty far fetched. Gary Tharrington was one of the best DE's to come through App in the past decade and he got buried play after play by Jake Long.

I don't expect App push around a good Big 10 offensive line, but this is "one brick in the wall". Also, even if App does beat UM again don't expect an SI cover. We are now FBS and this UM team will not be ranked #5 in the country when the season starts. That said a victory would be a great way to start App's FBS adventure!!

We had 8 sacks last year, a stat we must improve upon.

I agree we aren't going to push them around, but I also think it's unlikely they are going to push our guys 3 or 4 yds off the line every play, I think your right about the blitzing, if Woody gets creative with how we attack their line I think we can cause a lot of confusion. One thing that gives me hope is the Mich/UCon game last year, Mich had a huge advantage in terms of size, but they were unable to consistently move Conn off the line infact there were times when Conn's defense was dominate.

Holy cow, only 8? I knew it was bad, but no idea it was that bad. Greg Hardy almost did that against the Falcons!

The Falcons offensive line couldn't have held App sackless if they played last year!

I see our game with Mich being similiar to our first game last season against Montana. However, this season we will be better coming out of the blocks. Although I don't see us winning, I don't see us receiving another butt kicking like last year either.

I wouldn't bet on it. 3 or the 5 starters from last year are likely being replaced with hopefully superior athletes and maybe Sam Baker can stay halfway healthy for once.

While on subject, I expect App's OL and DL to be far better than last years version as well and the DL will have a much better feel for the base 3-4, so that Woody can use a lot more blitz packages and keep the other line guessing. App was much too vanilla on D last year.

Jake Long was also a #1 overall draft pick. And I think you're over estimating Gary Tharrington

Moehler: Are you referring to Graham Glasgow or another linemen? Glasgow was suspended back on March 20th. I copied several tweets about it and put them in my notebook but was busy with football offers and the basketball things going on and forgot to post about it. Just thought I would check as I've seen a few mentions of another OL in trouble with Hoke but no names have popped up yet. Kind of hoping another one might miss also.
