Remove the Track

1) to pay for it add at least $ 10-15 Mil to the campaign to pay for it or jack up the Athletics fee again?
2) It would still have to be rezoned of university use by the town of boone and they won't let us rezone a 2-story office building up at university hall. Do you think that they are going to forgo all the tax revenue that site would generate in private hands.
3) The College is Health Sciences of which HLES is a part of. The complex that would be built there would be focused on Medical Professions (Nursing et al) and the land has been conditionally donated by the Hospital to set up a partnership to get these programs to a higher level. The condition is for ASU getting the money and they can't even get the state to pony up the planning dollars. HLES and a few other parts of CHS would stay on campus.

1. As opposed to building an entirely new complex which would cost how much and where would it go?
2. Everything in Boone has to be rezoned, nothing new there.
3. My sister is an area director in C of HS. I know exactly which part is staying and which part is moving. Doesn't really matter which part is moving. Just using it to point out that the old HS is not too far from campus. I didn't mean to type HLES but CoHS.

But you are correct, the tax revenue is the main issue, as usual.

I would think so. I like Gonzo's idea of planting bushes along the walls (except where it says "Appalachian"), and just install more field turf to cover the track.

They should have made a deal with the county and just bought the old high school. There is already a track and football field there (just needs a modern surface), four additional fields for other activities, stands (with room to expand), parking, and room to build a complex with additional room for more student housing. That's exactly what the people bidding for the site are planning to use it for, a retail site and student housing. We already ripped down Mountaineer Apartments and put up modular housing so there was plenty of room for more of those. I know the county had $$$$ in their eyes but the university has pull and a deal could have been worked, especially during these past two years while the property just sat there with no bids and vandals were tearing it to shreds. And before some say it's too far away from campus, they are planning on building a new building and putting a part of the College of Health Science at the site of the old Lowe's Hardware (State Farm Rd and Deerfield) beside the Hospital. That is farther than even driving 321 to the big light and taking 105 to the old HS. It would have solved a few problems and given the university a bunch more rooms that they could have controlled and made money from instead of letting a private firm come in and make the money.

Like you, I've always wondered why ASU didn't work out a land swap deal plus a little cash when we gave them the property for the new high school. The county was in a bind and ASU would have had plenty of leverage to get a good deal. Like you said we could have utilized all of the fields in place at the high school plus we could have built the Athletics Center on site with the weight room, coaches/admin offices, practice facilities, and training rooms. Then at KBS we could have built just the top 3 levels for much less money, and with the money saved on the other facilities we could have added more seats in KBS. I guess it's too late for that now.

I'm definitely in favor of tearing down the current West Stands at some point and building them at one continuous angle which begins closer to the field. We could then come off the front of the East deck and extend down onto the track before connecting both sides with end zone seats. If we used metal ( I know its not AS nice, but JMU's looks pretty good) we could finally have a uniform stadium with much better atmosphere.

Metal bleachers is cheap and amateurish. Reminds me of Watauga High. Every decent major stadium in the US is concrete. We need to tear down the current upper deck on the east side and build the concrete lower deck up and back a long way. Kind of like the lower level at State or the only level at Wake.
