Coach Sirignano talked about the new program and I've heard several players say how he and the new S & C staff have been really focusing on injury healing/recovery and prevention in addition to the workouts. Several other players that were injured at the end of last season and during the summer have talked about how much better they are feeling now. Hopefully this new staff will help Tacoi, Law, and all the rest stay as healthy as possible and we can keep the injuries down to the bare minimum. They are going to happen but we all know the less we have and the faster players can return from the dings and other minor injuries that happen most every game, the better.

Re: Sumler
I was able to get by and watch a little practice on Sunday and also after reading the 247 article with no mention of Sumler, I still wonder what is going on with him.
He was running with 2nd team Sunday it appeared, but no targets in the 7 v 7 or 11 v 11 drills.

If this has already been mentioned elsewhere I apologize but Coach Satt made some interesting comments at Media Day when asked about Tacoi. He said that he still considers him an unknown, which is understandable given his injury history, but he also said that he sees him as being in the same boat as some of the freshmen until he is able to show some consistency.sixtoes9134 wrote:I was able to get by and watch a little practice on Sunday and also after reading the 247 article with no mention of Sumler, I still wonder what is going on with him.

Given how long he's been on campus, that surprised me a little bit. Combined with what he said at Sun Belt Media Day about him having "an up and down summer health-wise", that leads me to believe that there are still some big question marks.
Obviously he is a very talented kid and he's worked hard to get healthy. Hopefully he is able to make it through a season at full strength because he definitely deserves it but sometimes these nagging injuries just don't totally go away.

I watched that video yesterday and noticed the same. Sounded to me like a coach trying to light a fire under his player.Mike Holloway wrote:If this has already been mentioned elsewhere I apologize but Coach Satt made some interesting comments at Media Day when asked about Tacoi. Well, he was hurt and couldn't really contribute. He wanted to be closer to home but let's not fool ourselves. If he was starting and doing well, he would have stayed.AppState89 wrote:Not true. Some people thought because Sumler was a Rivals 250 player he would be a huge impact but even without health issues he still wasn't a starter at Oregon. There is a reason he transferred out, he could not start.
My fear is that Sumler is a little soft and really more of a track guy. When you have the speed he does, there is no excuse for him not to do well. Look at Dexter Jackson. He was a track guy who had some big games and got drafted. Sumler is a lot like Dexter. I don't see any shot at him making it in the NFL but with his speed and athleticism he could have a similar season to Dexter and give UM some fits in that regard, if he is healthy enough to contribute. The big thing is Sumler being healthy and tough enough to fight through nagging injuries.

Re: Sumler
The new S&C coach I believe is going to make our coaches look even better. We aren't going to have the injuries and will be in better shape than last year. I think Scott made some bad decisions last year and was a little overwhelmed but I don't blame it all on him. I think he was given a team who wasn't as conditioned and more injury prone than they should be. The new S&C coach seems to have them team in better shape so I expect Scott to win at least 5 games, despite the tougher schedule, because of this alone.JTApps1 wrote:The number of nagging injuries we had the last two years was one of them most telling ways that there were issues with our S&C program. We needed to get back to the Dillman, Kent, Patterson days of S&C. Looks like we have.

I think we have found out the hard way, that a great S@C staff is worth their weight in gold, and its really critical that we do everything possible to hang on to them. If it cost us more money than we traditionally paid to retain them, they find a way and pay them.

Re: Sumler
They are just as important as the position coaches and head coach. You have to have good leadership from the head coach, good fundamental teaching and motivation from position coaches, and the S&C coaches have to be good at developing players and keeping them healthy and in shape. I think it's something we all knew but now we appreciate it even more after a couple years of lesser development on the S&C end. I loved Kareem personally but he just wasn't as good as previous S&C coaches we have had and I think we are finally back to the caliber we had during the title years.moehler wrote:I think we have found out the hard way, that a great S@C staff is worth their weight in gold, and its really critical that we do everything possible to hang on to them. 2014, Dexter wasn't a track guy, he and three football player challenged the track team and the track coach asked him to run track.

I'd love Sumler to have a game in the Big House that mirrors Dexter Jackson's game in the Big House.

Re: Sumler
I will be shocked if Sumler turns out to be a productive asset for the offense. He's milked his injuries since he came to App State and he thinks he's a bonafide super star with a ticket to the combine.
I think TDog mentioned it but it is true that the new S & C coach will not allow that behavior anymore. Time will tell but I have little to no faith that Sumler will pan out in the way we all though a former 4 star recruit would.
However - watch out for some of the freshman on the squad. Those kids are killer.

Re: Sumler
He was a track guy in mentality but he was a better track player than football player. He wanted to get in space and outrun people. He wasn't big on taking hits over the middle. He used inside slants to get the ball quickly and then turn it up the field. He did not do well at the Senior Bowl and always struggled in training camps in the NFL. If you notice, those are the two settings where he faced legit NFL talent from top to bottom.Saint3333 wrote:2014, Dexter wasn't a track guy, he and three football player challenged the track team and the track coach asked him to run track.

He never should have gone in the 2nd round. That 4.3 40 at the combine and his game against Michigan had Gruden fooled. Jackson was a hard worker but had that track mentality thus he never was able to stick in the NFL. I hate that for him but it's the facts.

I'm with you. I don't expect it either. I hate that and wish he would but he just doesn't have that toughness. He's a track guy playing football, meaning he doesn't have the physical and mental toughness needed to last.APPARJ wrote:I will be shocked if Sumler turns out to be a productive asset for the offense. Did someone honestly tell him he would go to the NFL Combine? I doubt we have anyone in this senior class who will have any shot at it outside of Kendall Lamm- and I don't think Lamm will. I'm just saying with his size and athleticism that he may do it if he has been working hard under our new S&C coaches.

This couldn't be farther from the truth. He is a junior eligibility wise and has already said this is his last year of football. If he thought he was a "bonafide super star with a ticket to the combine" don't you think he would at least plan on staying to his senior season since nobody has really seen him play yet? The kid clearly has health issues, is using his talents to get an education, graduating, and going onto something other than professional football. This kid is the exact opposite of what you are trying to say he is. I don't respond much on here, but you went overboard with your assumptions so I had to say somethign!APPARJ wrote:I will be shocked if Sumler turns out to be a productive asset for the offense. Secondly, there are very real reasons as to why I believe what I believe. I stand by what I said. If you have a different opinion of the situation, that's perfectly fine with me.
I am very pro-student athlete and want them all to contribute, perform well and stay healthy. This is simply my perspective. Frankly, I think if one carefully puts the pieces together it isn't so hard to see my perspective on Tacoi has validity.
That being said, I would love nothing more than for Sumler to prove me wrong. I'm just have my doubts.

I understand your opinion and if I hadn't interviewed the kid or walked around with the kid, I would likely agree with your view. But, having been around him and interviewing him, it's simply not true. Why would a kid who feels that way publicly say he's done playing football after this year -- regardless of how he does? Nobody has seen him play but he's ready to hang the cleats up after this season because he will be a college graduate before next season starts.APPARJ wrote:First of all, if this is the same AppStateNews from Twitter, I hardly hold your opinion to be legitimate or worthwhile.AppStateNews wrote:This couldn't be farther from the truth. Re: Sumler
Track mentality means you aren't in the football mentality. You don't play through injury well and it's a label, fair or not, that football people put on fast people who aren't tough. Sumler is a good kid but he is just soft and not really a football guy. I hope he plays and we get something out of him but I expect him to be 2nd string and 6th-8th on the team in receiving this year.APPARJ wrote:Bro...
