WRAL Article on App Football
I'm assuming this is WRAL's attempt to cover App football? Wanted to get everyone's feedback on the content of the article itself.

Re: WRAL Article on App Football
To me, it looks like he was somehow trying to make connections between our incredible victory and his favorite team, and it just wasn't there. Does anybody outside of Raleigh think of our win at Ann Arbor and immediately think about the NC State-Central Michigan game? And, on the list of all-time great upsets, does anyone else consider NC State's upset of an overrated FSU team as comparable to our achievement? Really? I'm sure Sports Illustrated editors labored over putting "2nd All-time Upset" on their cover in 2007.
And how is it that an article about App. State includes a mention of NC State victories over Texas and South Carolina? (Hey Bubba, the App-Michigan game was not about you. Deal with it.)
The writer obviously knows that there will be many articles about the 2007 game written over the next couple weeks, and he just wanted to hitch his wagon to our star, and then call it his star. It's likely due to the fact that his "Power 5" team is not only irrelevant nationally, but hasn't
even won its CONFERENCE in 35 years.

All the State references call for an editor, but WRAL probably is too cheap to employ one. Otherwise... at least it's a little pub.

I completely agree with that. But, I've been reading Tudor's work since he slapped it out on a Royal portable typewriter. Then he got a little fast and loose with his memory and his facts. I see that hasn't changed.AppGrad78 wrote:My theory: The only bad publicity is an obituary.

Re: WRAL Article on App Football
Seems fine to me. I live in Raleigh and welcome any attempt to cover us out here. Between the proximity to 3 ACC schools + ECU, and Time Warner's local channel lineup (which excludes SportSouth though I guess that no longer matters) the Triangle is a veritable black hole for any coverage of App athletics. This is of course despite the high concentration of alumni that live in the region (a fact I've raised to WRAL before).

I appreciated the pub.
However, boy did he go out of his way to talk about NC State via an App State article? IMO, if you are going to talk about the App State upset, then talk about it. It is okay to reference comparable upsets but none of the NC State moments were even close. Also if I am closely reading the language I noticed several underhanded slights against us and he obviously doesn't give us much change to repeat the feat.
Also, with the numbers of App St alum in the RDU area, we deserve some pure coverage without even mentioning NCSU.

There's a lot of non-App people in the Triangle who think our move to FBS is wrong.

Re: WRAL Article on App Football
There 's also alot of Non-App people in the Triangle that think State is a perennial contender to compete for a National Title. Living in Raleigh you get used to the ridiculous homers that write for the N&O or "report" for WRAL. To place State's 1998 upset in the same conversation with what we did at Michigan in 2007 is beyond laughable. But I agree with the earlier poster, at this point the only bad publicity would be an obituary.

Re: WRAL Article on App Football
I wonder if the same people thought is was a wrong move for Miami and Va Tech to move to the ACC from the Big East. That is basically all we did was move from a conference that was headed in the wrong direction to one that is on the move up.sixtoes9134 wrote:There's a lot of non-App people in the Triangle who think our move to FBS is wrong.

If they're not a fan of our program, why do we care what they think? Being in FBS with Tobacco Road was always going to ruffle a few feathers down there.sixtoes9134 wrote:There's a lot of non-App people in the Triangle who think our move to FBS is wrong.

Re: WRAL Article on App Football
Not necessarily saying our move was wrong, but there are important differences between our move and Miami or VT's move. They moved into a conference that that fit their geography footprint with in state rivals. We are moving into a conference with schools much further away and there are no clear rivals other than Georgia Southern, and no in state teams at all. They were virtually guaranteed higher revenue with no additional costs. We are hopeful that we will get additional revenue and we know there will be additional costs. Based on past performance they had strong evidence the would elite ACC football teams on day 1. I don't think anyone expects us to be an elite Sunbelt team on day 1.AtlAppMan wrote:I wonder if the same people thought is was a wrong move for Miami and Va Tech to move to the ACC from the Big East. Re: WRAL Article on App Football
I have lived in the Triangle for a good chunk of my life and east of Greensboro nobody cares about App State except App Grads. Articles about App just do not sell newspapers. Everything is State, Carolina, Duke and to a lesser extent ECU. Other than the Michigan game and playoffs there are no sports articles in the News and Observer. The same goes for sports stores and finding AppState gear. App may have 10 times the number of graduates in the Triangle than Duke but people are just more interested in Duke. I am amazed the title of this article did not have Wolfpack or something like that in the title.
Re: WRAL Article on App Football
Caulton Tudor has been writing some rough "columns" since he started with WRAL. The one earlier this summer where he doubted North Carolina will host a Final Four anytime soon was pathetic.

And a number of App people who think so as well.sixtoes9134 wrote:There's a lot of non-App people in the Triangle who think our move to FBS is wrong.
