Move In Day

Unread post by McLeansvilleAppFan » Fri Aug 15, 2014 6:44 am

I assume all fall athletics and maybe more that just fall athletics are on campus, and many support students such as RAs have been on campus for a few days.

However today is dorm move-in day for freshmen. That includes my oldest daughter. :D

It has been said a time or two by others since this class of freshman and tranfers were accepted going back into December, but for everyone

Welcome to Appalachian State.

Congratulations!!! - It is a special day - Of course, driving back home without our "little girl" I was like a crying baby and my wife was as happy as a clam :D

Also, on that move in day, after hauling just about everything she owned up to her closet sized dorm room and then seeing the guys coming in carrying one bag I turned to her, gave he a big hug, and said, "This is the only time in 18 years I wish you had been a boy --- :o

Great memories!!! - enjoy the day ---

Just watched my baby pull out of the driveway headed up for her junior year. Feels strange not going with her but she is living off campus this year and does not need daddy to carry stuff up dorm stairs :( Life goes by too fast. Oh well I get to have another Freshman move-in in a couple years hopefully at App if all goes as planned.

Unloading my son for his freshman year at Clemson. The out of state tuition was too tough to swallow for App. Happy and sad at the same time.

One, move in day was very smooth, no small thanks due to the parent volunteers!

Second. Dr, Everts took time today to visit in my daughter's dorm room. I am not sure if it was because her door was open or we had way to many boxes in the hall and we were breaking the fire code, but I will give her credit for finding her way to the top floor of my daughter's dorm. She spoke with us for a minute or two and said all the right things about taking care of our daughter and making sure she learns and such. I was impressed.

It was a bit funny as we were setting up the room and the roommate and her family had just left and the door to the room was open and in comes a lady and says, "Hello, I am Chancellor Everts." I had my back to the door, so I did not see her enter the room and she just starts talking. All three of us had on App shirts and she commented on the nice App apparel and I told others with her that I really wanted and App "Dad and Alumni" on one shirt. I mentioned it was not such a niche market for that even if it was not going to be the best seller. I was promised they would look into this. :-)

I was impressed that Dr. Everts took time to visit actual dorm rooms. She could have stayed in the lobby and did a quick walk-through and did some politician style handshakes but she visited and talked not, for a long time, but enough.

That's great to hear about Chancellor Everts. It sounds as if she is cut from the same cloth as Peacock.

I saw a picture of Dr. Everts sitting at a dorm check-in desk at the computer helping issue keys and such. I am sure she was not there long, but that again speaks of her willingness to interact and be out and about on campus, and not just doing the polite handshake and move-on interaction that comes across, to me at least, as not much effort. She seems to have invested some time in this yesterday.

Dropped into Boone today. Had lunch at the Hob Nob Farms Cafe. Beautiful day to sit outside and give thanks that moving days are long gone. Saw a new store next to the Hob Nob called Barefoot Outfitters. All App apparel. Nice addition to the retail market. Then decided to check out bookstore. Not fond of the Together We Rise section and most of the selection. The exception was the Block A area. And yes the line was very long to get books. About made me break out in hives. Yes folks school is back in session and football is around the corner and we have a new beginning from the Chancellor to the S&C team. There really isn't anything to complain about! What will some people do?

There have been selfies posted all over twitter these last two days with people taking them with Dr. Everts from many different places around campus and in the dorms. Have seen nothing but fantastic (and not a few shocked) comments being said. Nothing like having the Chancellor check you in or drop by your room to welcome you to App. She even directed the band at Fan Fest. Really love hearing how she's engaging the students and families, and as McLeansville said, not just in a political like way but really talking to people. Taking a page from the KP playbook and putting her own stamp on the job. Love it.

I can understand the out of state tuition. To be honest my daughter applied only in state public. I am a bit sick about the loans both she and we as parents signed. I can't even imagine out of state, as much as I know you would have liked to have that been an option.

When I got the total cost from App and it was going to be 33k I was a little shocked. The in state tuition and 5k in lottery money were hard to resist.

An App victory against Clemson next year could ease my pain.

I admire and appreciate her effort in helping issue keys, but she is paid way too much salary and perks to be doing such a task. Great photo op, though, and good PR for the students and parents.

The Clemson diploma carries a lot of weight in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

As I was typing my posts I was thinking that as well but I did not type it out because in the end I don't think anyone has a job regardless of pay that can't take away a few hours on an important day like move-in day and do what she did. What she did is not a requirement I realize. Had she not done this it would not made her a lesser Chancellor for App, but by her doing this she created some good will, and that may or may not lead to a larger donation from someone with resources in the future, even when that was not part of why she was out and about. And by doing this she is in my view a better fit for Appalachian, especially coming after Peacock. Part of her job is to be the face of the university, and sometimes see needs to mingle with the hoi polloi, such as myself and my wife.

One another note, this is a thread about my daughter and others move-in day. Don't be bringing in any negative vibes on this particular thread.

It's hard to believe that it has been 8 years since we moved my daughter in and over 4 years since she graduated from Appalachian. Boy, time goes by fast...
