Cut Blocking
For several reasons I am glad we no longer play the cut-blocking, triple option teams (didn't see enough of the GaSo game to see if they are still doing it) but this article says a lot ---

Re: Cut Blocking
Seriously just needs to be outlawed by the NCAA. With the big push these days for player safety, this should be included. That's how we lost Darian Small last season right as he was really coming on at the NT spot

Re: Cut Blocking
On the same line of thought, our guys on the o-line do a lot of chop blocking. I've seen it more times than it's been called. Wonder why they are being taught/allowed to do this junk. That's a major penalty that can really be costly in a big game.

Re: Cut Blocking
I think it is only a penalty when it happens within "the tackle box" when the defender is engaged by another blocker and then is cut ---Bearboy wrote:On the same line of thought, our guys on the o-line do a lot of chop blocking. Re: Cut Blocking
There is a difference between CHOP and CUT blocking. Cut is knocking the D player's feet from under by 1 person (legal block), while Chop is done by 2 player, one hitting high and the other hitting low (illegal block). I am in agreement that both should be illegal.Bearboy wrote:On the same line of thought, our guys on the o-line do a lot of chop blocking. I've seen it more times than it's been called. To be fair that was flagged as a 15-yarder.mtnjax wrote:Seriously just needs to be outlawed by the NCAA. With the big push these days for player safety, this should be included. That's how we lost Darian Small last season right as he was really coming on at the NT spot
Georgia Southern plays Citadel next year. They should drop em.

Re: Cut Blocking
App's O-line has now been flagged twice (1 each game) this season for illegal chop blocks. Not sure why all the outcry over cut blocking as App has been dealing with it for a couple of decades against TO teams and it's been in the game of football dating back, oh I don't know, since the game's inception.
How do you guys propose a smaller player blocks a bigger player? Did any of you call out McElfresh for cut blocking the highly touted freshman, Peppers, in the UM game that put him out of the game with a leg injury for a short time? What's the difference in an offensive player cut blocking and a defensive player diving at a RB/TE/WR's feet to make a tackle (as demonstrated by our own players)?
This is not to say that I, in any way, condone a player trying to intentionally injure another player as stated by the el cid player.

Re: Cut Blocking
A smaller player can block a bigger guy low - the illegal block (cut-chop) as been explained earlier in this thread is when a defender is engaged by one blocker above the waist and then another blocker hits the guy low ---moonshine wrote:App's O-line has now been flagged twice (1 each game) this season for illegal chop blocks. Re: Cut Blocking
In simpler terms. You may not block a player below the waist if the player is already engaged with another player.

Re: Cut Blocking
I haven't watched the el cid v FSU game so I'm not sure if the illegal chop block pertains or if the player in question was trying to intentionally injure the FSU players by utilizing a legal cut block by aiming for the defenders' knees.
I understand the difference between the cut (legal) and chop (illegal), hence why I pointed out how App has been flagged twice this season for the illegal variety, while also showing that our players utilize the cut block, injuring an opposing player, with none of our fans making a big deal of it. Folks are wanting a legal cut block (blocking low) to be banned. So my question to those fans wanting low blocks banned: how does one propose that a smaller player block a larger player?

Re: Cut Blocking
It was a dirty hit uncalled for. I said it to the guys I was watching the game with at the time it happened. I don't care if you clean someone's clock on a straight up hit, but stuff like that looks like the intent is to hurt and that can end someone's career. Same type of hit at the end of a play ended DJ Smith's chances in GB.moonshine wrote:App's O-line has now been flagged twice (1 each game) this season for illegal chop blocks.
