MSOC v. Presbyterian 7 PM Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex

Unread post by asu66 » Fri Sep 12, 2014 3:38 pm

This one is hard to figure. Presbyterian was picked to finish next to last in the 2014 Big South race, but they already have a come from behind 2-1 win over Wofford--picked to be one of the two best teams in the 2014 SoCon race.

PC got it's win on converting two of three penalty kicks. That, alone, raises some questions. Three PKs in one collegiate game is an extreme oddity. I'm not calling it home cooking; but it's incredible luck for the underdog home team.

Given ASU's recent performances against Wofford, it's a little hard to be positive about this match--yet it's still Presbyterian.

I give the edge to the Apps, but it's a shaky edge.

Oh, BTW, the official SID release for this match says that ASU's "first win of this season for the men's soccer program will mark it's 425th all-time dating back to the 1962 season." They really know how to make a guy feel old. I was a frosh fullback/sweeper on that '62 team for Coach Eric DeGroat. It really doesn't seem THAT long ago. Pretty easy for me to say!

ASU leads 1 - nil in the 55th minute. Stan Broaden scored the match's only goal in the 14th minute. Presby plays an extremely physical style. It's a foul brawl so far...24 fouls and 4 yellow cards. Ugly soccer!

French defender Alex Beranger scored a header off a set piece corner kick to make it 2 - nil App State in the 63rd minute. Presby is done. The rough tactics are designed to make up for lack of speed and skill. The battle will continue, but the war is won for the Apps unless they ease off too much at the end.

Now 28 fouls and 5 yellow cards. Unreal! Three Apps in danger of a red card.

Frosh forward Austin Stamey scored off an assist from Alex Herbst in the 84th minute.

37 total fouls and 7 yellow cards. Ridiculous!

4 - nil win for Apps. Win number 425 in program history dating to September, '62.

How did you find yourself on the ASU soccer team? I don't know where you are originally from so I don't know about youth soccer back in the 1950s and 1960s. I knew you did a sport for App but I did not know it was soccer.

It's good to get back in the "W" column last night, in front of a good size crowd for the home opener. We pretty much dominated possession, for a change, as the team worked their collective butts off, made off -the- ball runs, played somewhat faster, and made better passes, as compared to recent games. It's amazing what a difference it makes when the team is able to work the ball through the midfied and gain numbers in the attacking third. As a result, we were able to put a number of crosses and through balls in, and outshot PC 17-4. This game could have been 6-0, as we had several near misses hit the post, go slightly wide, or saved on the line. Of course time and space make all the difference, as we controlled the ball for most of the match against a foe who struggled to put more than two passes together. Hopefully, this will serve as a confidence builder, and get us back on the right track in terms of playing "soccer". As said, way too many fouls, and I might add the Center Ref was quick to pull yellows last night.
