Solar System Model on high school campus

Unread post by McLeansvilleAppFan » Sat Sep 20, 2014 10:48 am

I just completed a scale model of the solar system on the Eastern Guilford High campus. For those in the general area feel free to stop by campus and take a look. Jupiter to Kuiper Belt (Pluto) is outside of the gate of the athletic field. The asteroid belt to the sun is inside the gate to the athletic fields but I don't think it is locked on weekends so you should have full access on a weekend day.

Carpentry did the building. Art students painted pictures of the planets. Math worked on the scaling. Photography and Sci Vis class took photos and scaled the digital images. I also had help from Spanish students for a translation I am working on posting and a few other teachers helped with editing and proofreading.

I stole the idea from GTCC so credit to the instructors there and also to App Physics and Astronomy as David Sitar helped with suggestions and editing.

The displays are to scale in distance from each other and a small image in the upper right corner is at the same scale to demonstrate the true size of the planets. The larger images of the planets are 40X so the detail of the paintings can be shown off.

I am hoping to get some media coverage for this from WFMY, WXII and/or WGHP, but it has been hard to schedule time that does not get in the way of my state tested classes in the morning. I do think GCS-TV will do something but that will be to a much more limited audience. If anyone wants to call a station and tell them to cover this then be my guest.

A baker's dozen of pictures is located on my google drive if you would like to see a small part of what has been done. The total length is around 385 meters.

GCS is now airing this short piece on their cable access channel, but they also post the videos on Youtube.

UNC-TV has expressed interest in doing a bit on this and the new telescope at GTCC for a Triad Astronomy bit for NC Now. No idea when it will fit in their schedule but they have agreed in principle to do something as well.
