Texas State gave Illinois a run for their money and Georgia State was beating Washington 14-0 at halftime

It was another tough weekend for the Sun Belt in football, but that's going to happen when you schedule power conference teams or any team flirting with the Top 25 week in and week out. And Sun Belt teams have schedule those games for the press and for the ol' budget. Most out-of-conference games remaining on this season's schedule are more reasonable.

As has already been discussed, ASU could have helped with a win over USM and C-USA. "Almost" doesn't count, but there were still some good take-aways from that game for Scott and his team.

Posted this in some detail last week, but it's still true: The Sun Belt's problems aren't just with P5 powerhouses. The league is struggling to beat anybody outside FCS right now (and as Troy knows, even that hasn't been a given).

This week

All OOC games: 1-7
Avg. margin: minus-17

vs. P5: 0-3
Avg. margin: minus-35

vs. G5: 1-4
Avg. margin: minus-7

Season overall

All OOC games: 3-22
Avg. margin: minus-18

vs. P5: 1-12
(Didn't figure the avg. margin last week, don't feel like adding it up this week. Suffice to say it's bad.)

vs. G5: 2-10
Avg. margin: minus-12

Well, we're in a conference with some schools that don't have that "any one, anywhere, any time" swagger that La-Lafayette, Tx State, ASU and GaSouth have. Troy used to have it--but apparently no more.

Sounds like they don't have the talent to play anyone, any time, anywhere.

But on the bright side we have 4 bowl ties in this year I believe. So no matter how bad the conference is squeak out 6 wins in conference and you still gets to play post season football.

Believe it's three this year, four next year, but yep, by the time we're eligible, it will be four.

Could get a little dicey this year with Ga. Southern looking like the best team in the league but ineligible for a bowl, and App at least capable of picking off an upper-division team or two.

It's interesting, as the league probably only has about five realistic contenders to go to bowls this year. Southern and App are ineligible; Ga. State, Troy and NM State are terrible; and Idaho is terrible AND ineligible.

That leaves ULL, ULM, A-State, USA and Texas State trying to scrap their way in.

All SBC games for October 4th are espn3.com. Man, not even 1 tv game?! Sickening how the P5 controls everything.
