Worst loss in recent program history?

Lot of good points. My original intent was to find out which recent game (say 2005+) was the worst in terms of our team's performance. So, obviously the opponent and margin of victory are the two biggest factors. That's why VT (strong opponent) and Liberty (literally an inch away from winning on the FG) were not as bad as The Citadel (weak opponent and large margin of victory). My secondary intent was to show how the 2012 team that Satt. inherited was not as strong as everyone makes it seem. It is a bigger theme on Appfan than here, but so many posters act like Satt got a great team and turned them into a crap team overnight. My post from Appfan:

Look at the 2012 8-4 season. We were lucky to have a winning season due to two factors that are no longer around: a bunch of traditionally weak teams on the schedule and Sean Price. We beat Montana by one score at home during their only losing season in 27 years. This absolutely would have been a loss if Montana had been their normal selves. Same with the Furman game... we beat them at home by only 5 points and they were 3-8. Any average Furman team from the 90s or 2000s would have spanked us. Then look at the Samford and GA Southern games. Price bailed us out on both of those games to give us 3 point wins. I'm positive we don't win either of those games without Price's last second miracle TD against Samford or the 231 yards against GSU. We were also embarrassed at home by the Citadel 52-28 which was way worse than the Liberty loss.

I know a win is a win but you all need to understand the cupboard was not as full as it appeared for Satt. We had been trending downward for several years and it would have come to a head in 2013 and 2014 had Moore stayed or gone.

And while we're talking about painful losses, I'll throw out the Richmond 08 playoff loss. I was sitting there in the snow in shock trying to understand how the awesome ride from the previous 3+ years was over.

Richmond loss is another big one for me. I still remember two things- the ridiculous decision to play AE who was limping all over the field and threw (I believe) about 4 horrendous Pics. The second was the visibly shocked home side. It was like 20,000 people were walking out of a really sad funeral. Just the look on the faces of everyone said it all. We all had our chests puffed out feeling like we would be the kings of FCS forever and then BAM! Truth be told the downslide probably began sometime that season. Struggles against crappy conference opponents, poor coaching decisions, etc. The VA Tech game sticks out also. I had no aspirations of winning but we didn't even freaking show up. At least e can take solice from that game in that VA Tech did have a great season and went to the Sugar Bowl.

People seem to think the Liberty loss was the worst one in recent program history. What do you say was the worst (most embarrassing) loss in the last several years? For me, it was easily the 52-28 loss to The Citadel at home in 2012. At least the Liberty game was close and we took it to overtime. The Citadel hadn't won in Boone in 20 years and it was 31-0 before halftime and was 45-7 in the third quarter.

NC A&T and Chuck South were both close games last year and both teams ended with strong records.

We have had quite a few embarrassing losses since 2011

Best Win, other than Michigan obviously might have been Wofford game on Halloween night. Absolutely laid the wood to them. That and the fact that it was nationally televised was great.

The Halloween game was fun! Also the Richmond home playoff win where AE ran for a gazillion yards and flipped in to the end zone. My personal all time favorite was the Richmond playoff win in Richmond to close out their old stadium. It was cold and dark and spitting snow. AE brought us down the field to win with a pass to Cline in the end zone. The final drive came after Cadet had muffed a kick off that went for a touchdown the other way and had seemingly given the Spiders the win. Most exciting time I have ever experienced at a sporting event!

Speaking of Richmond - Mike London who has had a horrible start at UVA has gotten off the hot seat and turned them around.

Best game in my opinion is Furman semi-final game in '05. Cold as hell, rowdy crowd, awesome (and lucky) win to send us to our first championship game. Don't get much better than that.

wasn't that Furman game the one when their guy pretty much dropped the ball running for a late potentially game winning TD? Or we caused a fumble? I just recall that we got really lucky in that game and I believe the JMU game one other playoff year. I can go way back to a win against WFU (in their place of course) when we won on a late nearly 50 yard field goal.
Who was the team we beat at home several years ago by returning an attempted two point conversion all the way back for a win? that has to rank up there as far as exciting finishes.

Another win that I recall was when we beat Marshall back in probably '82. Memorable becuase they were the top dog in the SC and also memorable because we tore down one of the goalposts and the next day the club team had a game and both teams had to go to the other end to kick field goals and extra points. Not a win for the ages but kind of funny with the result.

I'll take a slightly different approach. How about the fact we haven't beat and "top" calibur FCS team, not in the SoCon, since Delaware in the '07 championship game. Chew on that for a sec.

*Oddly enough, the Montana home game in '12 doesnt count - they were under .500 for the season.
