Re: Vegas Likes APP
It can be debated either way, but I don't really agree. I do think Liberty was as good as we were on that day in that they earned the win. They played a good game and they deserved the win. That being said, our defensive performance was (just my opinoin) below what we were capable of doing even at that time. Call it execution, coaching, bad luck...whatever....we simply stumbled that day. I think that, had we played a week later, it would have been a different game.bcoach wrote:Actually I can't agree. Obviously, it's just an opinion. It's a game that should have been won and wasn't. Nothing we can do about it now other than focus that frustration on ULM. Lots of questions left to be answered, and hopefully we see the answers we like.

I agree in that it will tell us how much we've progressed. I think most of the early losses (save Southern Miss) probably gave us a pretty accurate view of where we were at the time - we just didn't like the answers we got. Clearly we've improved since then. This is the last "middle-of-the-pack" opponent we'll play this year, so in that respect it should be a good measuring stick.WataugaMan wrote: One thing is for certain, this week's game will tell us more about where we are than any ohter game thus far.

That is for sure.

If we played the same defensive scheme vs. Liberty as we have the last two weeks, bringing pressure, I like our chances vs. Liberty.
The offense started clicking when we inserted the young'uns in the oline and the defense starting clicking when we applied pressure. Special teams may not click again until 2015.

Satt doesn't make it easy to pick a winner at home. We lose a heartbreaker or beat the crap out of the visitor. Either way, it's Black Saturday and KBS should be rockin'. Go App.

The USA home game was pretty anti-climatic and they pretty much man handled App the entire game. I think ULM is a similar team and I just hope with the more aggressive approach and improved line play we can often be the smacker rather than the smackee!asunewbie wrote:Satt doesn't make it easy to pick a winner at home. Re: Vegas Likes APP
I think App looked past Liberty, which is always a mistake, but putting that aside, it appears that, as expected, we are seeing a much faster game than the previous years, due of course, to being in the SBC vs. the Slocon. With that increased speed comes the requirement to adjust, and I feel like we are settling in a bit and not getting shocked by that difference.
We have undergone massive, massive change in the past 18 months; change that could have set other programs back years from being competitive. And, here we ate flirting with a winning conference record. Granted, the hard part is coming and I agree, this game will be very telling.
Surely, the odds makers are looking past the same conference records, calling it even and giving App the 3 point HFA. I think the line is pretty close considering App is unproven and ULM is average. Besides, the point spread isn't what Vegas thinks will be representative of what the score will be, but what will get the most people to bet, and lose. Maybe that could be seen as semantics; maybe not.

ULM may be a similar caliber to USA, but they are much different. ULM plays a 3-3-5 scheme on defense and is smaller on the lines but much more aggressive. USA had a bigger Oline and better QB.SpeedkingATL wrote:The USA home game was pretty anti-climatic and they pretty much man handled App the entire game. The key to the game is if we can run and not have to pass vs. their scheme. If we get down and have to pass it is doubtful we can win.

This is the game where Satt and Ponce earn their paychecks game planning against the Warhawks 3-3-5. ULM's NT is 3rd on the team in tackles and has 6 TFL and 4 sacks so the OL may be forced to double team him all game. Their defense has 57 TFL, 29 sacks and 8 INT's on the season.Saint3333 wrote:ULM may be a similar caliber to USA, but they are much different. Guessing we'll get to see some (bubble) screens to slow down their rush...calling Meadors, Sumler and Beathard! Probably get to see quite a few trap runs where the OL will leave a DE unblocked for the pulling G to take on or run away from the unblocked DE allowing the pulling G to get to the second level to take on a LB. Upshaw might find more success on these type runs where he just has to hit the hole and lower the boom on anyone who dares to fill it. Utilizing some inside zone blocking, or partner scheme, will help to handle the stacks ULM lines up in. This may be a very effective attack with Cox's vision.
Of course using motion can help the O outflank the D and give Lamb a better read. Speaking of Lamb, roll the pocket to get away from any inside stunts and not allow their D to just pin their ears back. Keep the Warhawk D on their heels with quick and long counts as well as overall tempo. Excited to see how App attacks the 3-3-5!

In addition, I think wheel routes to Cox or Upshaw might be effective as Cox and a year earlier Steven Miller had a lot of success with them. Just get guys like Cox, Sumler, Upshaw or Jones in space and away from the penetration.moonshine wrote:This is the game where Satt and Ponce earn their paychecks game planning against the Warhawks 3-3-5.
