Sorry about that. Came off way more sarcastic and hostile than I intended. I think it entirely depends on what you want. if its Music or Education then App is number one in the UNC system. Heavy Sciences I would say not so much because we are not a research institution.

You're good! I agree. Overall we are definitely 3rd in the state (public) and 5th in the state (private).

Actually science undergrad App is pretty good. We have a very good success rate getting kids into medical school. Probably as good as the larger UNC schools just not as many students per year apply from App because as you said that is not why most attend.

Actually the heavy sciences are excellent here at App at the undergrad level. There is some research here but not so much to get in the way of the teaching. Perfect balance in my view.

The Physics Teacher was edited in house by Dr. Mamola until very recently. He also was announced as the winner of the Oersted Prize for 2015. This is like the Oscar of physics teaching. Sagan and Feynman are previous winners. Very rarefied air here.

Hell, if they were able to teach me some physics they know what they are doing.

I could go on about Chemistry as well.

(Disclaimer:I am a bit biased as I have my BS from App Physics and Astronomy, and my wife has her degree from App Chemistry. Biased but also I can speak from 1st hand experience of the quality.)

Lastly I would add they (both profs and staff) are very nice caring people. After the fire at my school they did so much for me, and they did not have to do anything to help me out. THAT alone is worth something in my book.

I didn't mean to get on a soapbox but really App science in really top notch for BS degrees and even Masters.

I'm assuming you added Duke and Wake, but Davidson is ahead of us as well for private schools.

It depends on the criteria. Based on published rankings in various magazines, UNC, and NC State lead the list and ASU likely comes in third. If you are talking selectivity and admissions standards, then:

UNC-CH
NC State
UNCW
ASU

Interestingly enough, this rank order holds true for 4 year and 5 year graduation rates, as well.

I've said this before, but it is worth repeating - colleges and universities, including ASU, need to do a better job in graduating students in 4 years. With the exception of UNC, all schools on this list have four year graduation rates below 50%. I know this is an achievable goal, JMU does it, and so should we. Also, it would be great to see us improve our 5 year graduation rate to something like 80% instead of 60%. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the students, but the universities can help in this process by establishing a climate and culture where students are expected to graduate on time. Peer pressure can be a positive influence in this process.

I think you'd have to rank them in some kind of tier system when it comes to undergraduate admission standards/prestige.

1st tier: UNC

2nd tier: App, NCSU, UNCW

3rd tier: ECU, UNCC, ECU

And so on.

If you look at specializations, App is closer to #1 in business, music, and education.

I'd agree with this. State would probably have to rank ahead of us due to the wider selection of graduate/research programs and higher average income of their grads, but I would *guess* that admission standards are actually similar.

A school that really impresses me is UNC-Pembroke. I know the numbers used to rank the students, which in turn are used to rank the schools will not favor UNC-P. UNC-P will never make it to the top of lists b/c of these numbers; but, I have had the chance to interact with the physics profs there over the last few years. Top. Notch.

They have their students involved in poster talks and very active in getting their students involved in the research they do as profs. A wonderful blend at the undergrad level.

There are I am sure some exceptions out there I imagine, but there are some gems amongst the UNC system schools in lots of areas that are not always put out there. I just hope the UNC-CH scandal does not hurt the other campuses.

I was at UNC-P last weekend for a physics teacher conference. When I see the crap going on at UNC-CH and then see what is being done at a small rural school like UNC-P in a poor area serving poorer students it really pisses me off. I also have to send out kudos to UNC-P for being able to do what they do with the resources they have. That speaks highly of the school in my view.

You did a much better job than me highlighting why science degrees from App are top notch. My daughter is in the pre-med program now and she gets tons of individual attention. She did a study abroad in India last Summer and works in one of the professor's research labs currently. He will be sure she has undergrad publications and research experience. She will get a chance to present at conferences which is awsome for an undergrad. They do an excellent job rounding out these kids resumes to make sure they are very competitive when it comes time to apply to med school. The class sizes are small in the upper level classes so you get a chance to know the professors on a personal basis which is very valuable. In some ways I believe App is actually better than a UNC for undergrad science. Even though I am an App- Bio\Chem major I am totally unbiased.
