Annual Football Goal
I always remember Coach Moore stressing that our first goal was always to win the Conference and then to win a National Championship. That first part hasn't changed but what about the second part? I know we virtually have zero chance at winning the FBS championship but is our ultimate goal to make one of the New Year's Six Bowls? My understanding is that there are six major bowl games (Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach) and two of those will host the two semifinal playoff games. The top G5 team will be guaranteed a spot in one of the remaining four bowls. After seeing how close Georgia Southern was to getting that spot (a few plays away from beating NC State and GT), it has made the possibility of making one of the major bowls seem very achievable in the near future. I feel App has a good chance of being much better in two years than GSU is this year. Is my understanding of the system correct?

Yes, you are correct on the system, although GA Southern (like us) has to have a few things happen to get into a bowl game because of the 2nd year of the transition. That is finished after this year.

Re: Annual Football Goal
Our long-term goal should definitely be a New Years Six game. We'll be eligible next season.
Making the CFPlayoff will be all but impossible for ANY G5 team. Look at Marshall: one of 2 undefeated teams left in FBS but they have yet to crack the top 20.

Re: Annual Football Goal
I guess my point was that GSU didn't seem extrodinarily great this year and they would have been in the running, setting aside the transitional issues. Marshall's schedule is so weak that GSU would probably get in over them with the two P5 wins. That just made it seem very real that App could be playing in the Rose bowl soon! So many people that were against the move say "we used to compete for national championships but now our goal is to go to the John's Plumbing Bowl". I wonder how many of these folks realize we have the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl and those odds are similar to winning the national championship in FCS.

Once the CFP system was finalized ... I have said "that" is our championship now... Think about playing in the Orange Bowl or Tostitos Bowl... how crazy is that. Just think about that for a minute... playing Georgia or TCU on national tv... and making 18 MILLION dollars ( now we would have to share that we the SBC) but we would probably net like 6mil... something we could never do as a FSC team. It took Boise St. 20 yrs to get in a major bowl but b/c of the playoff sys. we have the opportunity much sooner.... think of the publicity... crazy

THANK YOU! I'll miss the playoffs but It seems we have much more to play for now and that was a big argument for the pro-FCS crowd.AppFan11 wrote:Once the CFP system was finalized ... Re: Annual Football Goal
Speaking of payouts, has it been explained how the different payments will be divided in the Sun Belt? I assume the $12MM base pay is split evently (11 members). What about the $2MM - $4MM performance payout? Is that split evenly or weighted based on rank in conference? What about the $300k APR bonus? Does each school keep it if they earn it or is divided evenly across all conference members, including those that didn't get the bonus (I hope the former)? Also, I thought the top G5 team earned $6MM rather than $18MM. Or is the $6MM the conference payout and the additional $12MM includes bowl payments? How would the Sun Belt split that?AppFan11 wrote:Once the CFP system was finalized ... I have said "that" is our championship now... Re: Annual Football Goal
Next year the only New Year's Six Bowl game that'll take a Group of Five team are the Fiesta and Peach Bowl (Cotton and Orange are semifinals next year). The Sugar, Rose and Orange Bowls all have contracts for different Power conferences in non-semifinal years while the Cotton, Fiesta and Peach will take at-large/Group of 5 Champion.

Re: Annual Football Goal
The formula for a G5 team getting into the CFP as i see it is minimum 3 P5 teams OOC and going undefeated. That gets you in the conversation. that would be some aggressive scheduling though and I think a school would only do it if they felt confident in pulling it off (think Boise at the height of their success)
I think the goal of a New Year's Day 6 bowl is right. the above formula gets you into that if not the CFP

Yes.appvette wrote:Speaking of payouts, has it been explained how the different payments will be divided in the Sun Belt? I assume the $12MM base pay is split evently (11 members).
It's 4 mil and it depends on the conference.appvette wrote:What about the $2MM - $4MM performance payout? Is that split evenly or weighted based on rank in conference?
A school doesn't receive that money if they fall below the threshold. And the Sun Belt gets 11 x 300k regardless. So if any school doesn't make the 930 APR threshold, each school that does gets a bigger and equal piece of the pie.appvette wrote:What about the $300k APR bonus? Conferences received 6 mil for each team selected for the CFB playoff, 4 mil for each team in a New Year's Six Bowl, 2 mil to cover semifinal and finals expenses (per team per game).appvette wrote:Also, I thought the top G5 team earned $6MM rather than $18MM. Regardless, it's five times what the Group of Five teams would have received in the old model.

Would love nothing more than to see us in the 2016 Peach Bowl.

Re: Annual Football Goal
The G5 teams are screwed by this new "playoff system" plain and simple. No, I don't miss FCS but the best G5 teams will ever get is beating the P5 teams on their schedules & screwing up their payday. That said, let's be the best we can be. Go App!

Re: Annual Football Goal
What makes you think G5 are screwed? We're getting 5x what G5 teams used to get and you have to admit the Alabamas bring in exponentially more than the Georgia States. And we do have a golden opportunity at a major bowl here.luvyosef wrote:The G5 teams are screwed by this new "playoff system" plain and simple. Re: Annual Football Goal
Two things:
1) GSU was not close to making a NY6 game, even if they were eligible, because Navy beat the brakes off them.
2) Marshall is not a good example for the argument that a G5 team can't make the playoff. They're ranked so low because their schedule has been terrible. A couple of the Boise State and TCU teams of the past likely would have made a 4-team playoff, and certainly would have made an 8-team playoff, which will likely happen in a few years.
