He acknowledged his mistake the moment he headed back to the sideline pointing to himself as the one who messed up. I would hope he has learned from that episode. I would agree that Bobo is not the consumat returner. My biggest pet peeve is his taking the ball out of the end zone. I don't know the odds but my guess for all returners who leave the end zone, not just Bobo, the fail to make the 25 more often than not. However, I assume there is a reason he remains the PR.

As to his talent, I can't vouch for that but I do know he earned great praise from his position coach coming out of Fall camp. He works hard and is likely one those guys coaches like having around. And for a guy not very athletic he made a nice acrobatic catch on Saturday.

We aren't going to pull a shirt to upgrade that position this year. He is the most reliable player available to field punts. He does need to take what the opponent gives him.

He will likely not be returning punts next year and could find himself as a backup WR next year. But he is a high character guy and I expect him to do what is best for the team. He represents a lot of what is great about App athletics and hope the best for him.

I just checked the moderator logs. None of your posts have been deleted.
DOn't think he is referring to you exactly. I have posts from time to time that do not make it for some reason, like clicking submit does not work or something.

I respect that stance. App State fans should never slander, mock or disparage members our team when all they're doing is playing hard. We may disagree with what is appropriate when making observations based on what's happening on the field. But it should never be in disrespect.
ARJ is correct here. WVAPP is and always will be an advocate for players and coaches. That is one fact that will never change and he will defend them with everything he has. Unlike some on here I will not disrespect that position, especially since I happen to agree with not disrespecting our players when they are playing as hard as they can.

The original question was why Bobo? Obviously Coach Satterfield and his staff feel he is the best option at this point and since they are the ones watching in practice every day and we only see him on game day then I will defer to their judgement. Do some on here really believe that if we had a Devin Hester currently active that we would not be playing him? Or anyone, for that matter, that has shown a better ability in practice to be the PR than Beathard that we would not have them fielding punts? There is no logic in that. If the staff feels that he is the safest bet right now then that's it. People can disagree all they want but until one becomes head coach then what our staff decides is what is going to happen.

As Saint stated we're not going to pull a shirt now. And as I stated earlier we've got several shirted players with PR experience and even two of our 2015 commits do also. There are three games left. If we get the ball at the 25 every kickoff and a fair catch on every punt then that's fine with me.

I think it's safe to say this conversation got a little out of hand. I believe most of us can agree on a few things:

1) Bobo Beathard is, by all accounts, a hard-working kid who has been nothing but a credit to Appalachian State.

2) Our team punt return average is 3.6 per return, which ranks about 120th in the nation. If you take out the Campbell game, the number becomes -1.4 (yes, that's negative 1.4 yards per return), which would obviously rank dead last in the country by a wide margin. We would be better off with a more productive return game. (I know we don't have universal agreement on this point, but I think most would agree.)

3) If the staff felt they had a better option who was also reliable and didn't require pulling a redshirt, he'd be out there.

Never really thought about this until now. Does anyone think that some of these kids (the fast ones with good hands, etc) simply have no desire to return punts? When you hear that a kid (like Bobo for example) stands out in practice and/or is the most reliable, etc you have to think that one of our better receivers like Meaders would have to be a better option from an athletic standpoint. I guess that Sumler just doesn't quite have it or came in a bit overrated. All that being said maybe it just comes down to desire and guts. I know I would have had zero desire to look up in the sky for a football while 11 guys are headed my way to clean my clock. Armanti took a beating in the paper for his lack of return ability. There aren't but a few Hesters and Sprolls in the world. My expectation for a punt returner is just "don't screw it up"! Take a fair catch or run forward for whatever yards you can get. I agree with one of the posters who pointed out the obvious- Don't you think the coaches have determined who the best available returner is?

For 2014? Yes.

I just ask everyone to keep in mind that good hands and speed are only two components for being an effective punt returner. It has to be one of the more difficult jobs in football, and comes with a lot of pressure. Typically, your best PR guys are just freaks (Hester) or are C R A Z Y...it's takes a special breed to want to return punts.

I don't think anyone would argue with the statement earlier that Malachi and Simms are better WR than Bobo--I doubt Bobo would argue that. However, it doesn't mean that he isn't "App State WR material" or that he is simply "FCS-level talent." He's our PR, probably for the rest of the season, you can support him or anonymously bash him. Take your pick, but just keep in mind that there's a reason he's the guy for this season.

One more comment on this. THERE IS NO PLAYER ON THIS TEAM WHO IS NOT ASU MATERIAL!!!!
Oh give me a break. Based on some of the WRs we've had over the last decade, he doesn't stack up favorably. I didn't start a petition to have him stripped of his uniform.

Jeez. Don't blow a simple comment about on-the-field play out of proportion.
It was not a simple comment about on the field play It was what kind of material he is referring to Garner Web. I am fed up with this attitude about our " pre FBS recruits". These guys got us here and we owe them a debt of gratitude not a constant " you just aren't good enough for us any more." We moved up but not exactly to the SEC. Some folks need an attitude change. We can be proud of where we are without constantly demeaning those player that you don't think are good enough for us any more.
Yes, actually, it was a simple comment about on the field play. Newsflash: Bobo isn't a good App State WR. He has been a non-factor at WR since he's been at App State. Why is it a crime to point that out? I didn't slander his character with a personal attack, criticize his effort and passion or call him names. I'm simply stating what anyone can see on the field. Not everyone can be a star.

Also, regarding your ridiculous comment about needing "attitude changes" and FCS guys not being "good enough" for FBS... I don't think the same thing about Malachi or Simms at WR. They've transitioned well into the Sun Belt as evident by their play every weekend and they are FCS guys. Do I still need an attitude adjustment? Is that how you define "constant demeaning"? Or could it be possibly be that Malachi and Simms are better WRs than Bobo???

I've rarely seen you post anything nonsensical and insulting but this is exactly that. I'm the players' #1 fan. I wish every guy on the team could excel at their position and contribute every Saturday. But if you can't have an objective discussion about on the field performance on a freaking message board, where can you have it?
My whole objection is him or any other player on our team being referred to as not APP material. That is offensive. I see there are those that object to me feeling that way. I am sorry I don't meet those expectations but that is the way I feel. ALL our players are APP material regardless of what they do on any particular play or plays. People can critique if they want I really don't care unless it is disrespectful. BUT!! All our guys are APP MATERIAL. With that said yes he does need to get coached up but that is not his fault. That is the coaches fault.

Great. You don't like a phrase with a subjective meaning that I used to describe a player I was actually defending.

I don't like being accused of constantly demeaning players (because I absolutely do not) and being told that I need a new attitude towards "Pre-FBS players" when all I've done is shown support.

Look let's make peace. My objection was to your "not APP material" comment. It just rubs me the wrong way due to comments BY OTHERS about how we are playing in FBS with FCS players. They are not FCS players they are ASU players. Yes it did appear I was directing the other comments to you. I am sorry for that as it was not intended. I am just sick of the attitude some have now that the older guys on the team are below our standards. That attitude that now we can recruit so much better players. Well my answer to that is that we have a lot of guys who have been around for 4-5 years and I am damn glad they have been here.
Again this is mostly a general rant and not directed at you.

Thanks. I appreciate your explanation.

I agree there's been too much disrespect towards these Jrs and Srs just because the "C" is now a "B". My comments had nothing to do with FBS or FCS... just pure on the field performance. After all, Kendall Lamm has a very good chance at playing on Sundays after this year and he was an FCS recruit. Moving to the Sun Belt didn't diminish his talent.

Thanks again.

Congrats to Bobo. I was one of those who didn't think he had it in him, and he had the best game of his career today. Great to see.
