App asking for NCAA Waiver
Tommy Bowman @AppTrailWSJ 3m3 minutes ago
App State is asking the NCAA to waive post-season ineligibility, mandatory during FBS transition, in order to pursue a bowl bid for 2014.
Tommy Bowman @AppTrailWSJ 2m2 minutes ago
Details forthcoming... It will be up to the NCAA to consider a waiver and allow the Mountaineers bowl eligibility this season.
Glad to see the administration trying to do something to reward the kids, especially the Seniors for their turnaround and a winning season, should we win on Saturday

Yep. They've had a request in and even a petition going around for a while now.mtnjax wrote:Completely forgot about that thread.
You figure it doesn't hurt to ask. I'm sure GaSo has already submitted the same
SOS definitely on our side but they can and do point to the fact they beat us. Even if there is a spot who knows who the NCAA would favor.

Let's say that the NCAA does grant us a waiver. I would think that our name recognition could help us in getting an at-large bid over say a lesser name 6-6 team

The Sun Belt board has been keeping pretty good tabs on the amount of bowl eligible teams. Providing that a waiver was even granted, there might not be any spots left.

I still think we should join forces with GSU and propose a 1 time Bowl game where we play each other. Find a date without any other bowls, find a neutral site, find a sponsor, negotiate a deal with ESPN and get NCAA approval. It would be the "Transition Bowl" for the 2 bowl eligible teams in their transition year and it would not interfere at all with the current bowl system.

Re: App asking for NCAA Waiver
While it would be enjoyable, this won't happen. If I am Georgia Southern, it's a no win situation. They beat us this year already. By playing us again if they win, well they already did that big deal, if they lose, everyone will question their SunBelt championship. If I'm Georgia Southern, I am really not interested.Yosef77 wrote:I still think we should join forces with GSU and propose a 1 time Bowl game where we play each other. yah, I am assuming they would be interested in a post season game against hated rivalry but if they are not then obviously it doesn't happen. I would think it might be worth asking.

I assume they'd either grant a waiver for both or neither, right? Considering the circumstances are exactly the same.
I would think a waiver would mean we'd be eligible like any other team (as opposed to just if there aren't enough eligible teams to fill all the bowls). Otherwise, why would we need a waiver? That rule is already in place, right?
Re: App asking for NCAA Waiver
UCLA requested a bowl waver back in 2011 and Georgia Tech in 2012. Both received it.
They were both for totally different reasons and are from major conferences but still the NCAA does grant these sometimes.

I just wonder who we get in over? The other Sun Belt teams behind us? Don't most bowls still have tie-ins? I guess there's still the chance some tie-ins will involve conferences without enough bowl eligible teams...mtnjax wrote:Let's say that the NCAA does grant us a waiver. Either way, having the waiver granted, and knowing we control our own destiny could be great motivation for Saturday too!

Re: App asking for NCAA Waiver
I would be opposed to us taking a spot from an eligible SBC member. I have mixed emotions about this. I would definitely make the effort to go to a bowl game if we landed a spot. However, we knew the rules when made the move. Not sure I favor changing the rules now. I could also see GSU having a stronger case as they will at worst be co-champions of the SBC.appgrad wrote:I just wonder who we get in over? The other Sun Belt teams behind us? Re: App asking for NCAA Waiver
I think it more shows that it's a dumb rule in general. Why do you punish an entire 2 classes of players by not letting them be eligible for postseason play by changing classifications? i understand not letting us in the FCS playoffs because we have increased scholarship numbers. but when we're playing a full FBS schedule, we should be bowl eligible from the get gohapapp wrote:I would be opposed to us taking a spot from an eligible SBC member. Re: App asking for NCAA Waiver
I'm excited regardless of the outcome. Both teams have served notice this year that we belong. We really have nothing to gain by playing yall again and everything to lose. Swap places and you'd understand. I'm pretty sure nothing will come of any of this, but both of our ADs are putting forth the effort and it will be appreciated by the players and fans. It is what it is, it sucks, but we knew it going in. Next year we get it on at your place and I think the eventual 'belt winner and bowl rep. will be determined that day in Boone. Don't worry though, yall will probably have a good enough record to get in also.

Re: App asking for NCAA Waiver
I don't want us to take a spot over a fellow SBC member, but I do like the school is sticking up for the players. They've worked hard to be in a position to ask for a waiver, and it's nice we recognize that.
