Appalachian State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. The University, located in the town of Boone in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, is a constituent institution of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system. Appalachian has signature strengths in education, business, the arts, and undergraduate education, and emerging strengths in the core sciences, environmental sciences, renewable energy, and health-related programs. The faculty is renowned for outstanding teaching, research, and creative activity; faculty members enjoy an interdisciplinary and collegial environment, and are supported by a strong and engaged administration and an accomplished, dedicated staff. This team provides students with a wide range of experiences to prepare them to take their places in society as involved citizens and global leaders.
The Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor reports directly to the Chancellor. Under the direction of the Chancellor, the Provost serves as the academic leader of the University, represents the Chancellor when called upon, and performs other duties as assigned by the Chancellor. In the absence of the Chancellor, the Provost acts as Chief Executive Officer of the University.
As the University's Chief Academic Officer, the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor will: provide outstanding campus-wide leadership in realizing the vision and achieving the academic goals of Appalachian State University; oversee strategic directions, personnel, curricula, and budgets for the Office of Academic Affairs, encompassing colleges, institutes, centers, and other entities that report to the Provost; support integrated strategic planning and institutional effectiveness initiatives; and collaborate with other members of the Chancellor's Cabinet in achieving University objectives.
The specific experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position are:
an earned doctorate or other appropriate terminal degree, a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching, and eligibility for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor;
extensive successful experience in higher education at senior management and leadership levels;
knowledge of the goals, objectives, and operations of a public university; commitment to support of environments and curricula focused upon student success, and the ability to lead faculty and deans in creating transformational educational experiences for students; exceptional interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively, decisively and transparently with senior academic leadership, faculty, students, staff, trustees, donors, external constituencies, and other stakeholders important to a public university; innovative vision and managerial skills to protect, nurture, and expand an increasingly rigorous and superior-quality academic core amid current budget challenges; demonstrated success with strategic planning; evidence of promoting a diverse and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff; and dynamic team-building and leadership skills with evidence of deep appreciation of, and support for, shared governance.
