We should get a Jerry Moore statue
and also make the place where the statue is called Jerry Moore Plaza or something. We could do this after the expansions in 2021 are complete.

You certainly know how to suggest ways to spend money.crossza wrote:and also make the place where the statue is called Jerry Moore Plaza or something. We could do this after the expansions in 2021 are complete.

Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
Spending money makes money. As a student at ASU I would gladly have my fees go up a lot if it meant better facilities and all that stuff!
Just think if every student paid 750 dollars more per year, that would be 1.35 million a year in cash.

Snarky comments about money aside-
I agree, it should definitely be on the long-term plan for stadium expansion.
Hell, (I know they're rolling in dough, but) Baylor already has a statue to RGKnee.

Yeah...........Im not paying $750 a year in athletic fees for a statue or more club seating or other extravagant purchases that I will never see or use. Thats almost doubling the Fees. Yosef club wants, Yosef club pays
Edit: I misread. You are asking for $750 more per student? $1,100r? Per student? Instead of 350? No.

Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
There are so many arguments to be made here - where should I start?crossza wrote: Other schools are wayyyy higher than 1,100 a student.
First, just because other schools make their students pay 4 figures for athletics, does that mean that ASU should, as well? It's the old cliche "if he jumped off a bridge, would you?" Appalachian State exists to educate the people of North Carolina, not to fund an athletic program. Adding more fees to the already growing tuition makes that mission all the more unrealistic.
Second, Why stop at $1100? Why not just make it $2500 (this would be around the highest in the US)? Think about the revenue stream! And students aren't really paying it, their parents are! That's an extra $27,359,500 we could put into the athletic coffers. Man, we could put a scoreboard in Holmes pretty quick with that kind of dough. And that god-awful track would be gone post haste!
Third, why stop at athletic fees? Why not raise tuition to, say, $17k? That's on par with what an in-state student at Pitt pays, so we can definitely get away with it (since others do it, you see). That's an extra ~$56mil that we can put into our endowment (~$79mil today). We could build some fancy new buildings for that, and maybe even afford the old high school campus.
And of course I'm sure we could tack on a one time "statue fee" to pay for a gleaming bronze turd in middle of Sanford Mall to commemorate our savior, Crossza, for without him we wouldn't have this glorious windfall.
Give 'em hell!

A statue is long term, but for now, App should name the playing field at KBS "Coach Moore Field." A great way to recognize one of our greatest coaches!

Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
In my personal opinion, we wouldn't have the money we do have without Coach Moore bringing the universities 3 National Championships and a win in Ann Arbor. If the best way we can honor man is by building him a statue then, by all means, it's worth spending money on that. He's certainly earned it. All in on that idea and have been for a while.

I suggest you do some research and compare App to other NC schools.crossza wrote:Other schools are wayyyy higher than 1,100 a student.BTK2000 wrote:Yeah...........Im not paying $750 a year in athletic fees for a statue or more club seating or other extravagant purchases that I will never see or use. Lots of my fellow Americans have large credit card bills, student loan debt, more house than they can afford. That creates problem for the country, did we learn nothing from 2007-2008?
On a personal note before you leave App I'd like to recommend you take a course in personal finance, I think all students should take this course to learn how to manage their finances. It will help you in the long run. I thought I knew a lot about how to save and tax plan, but this course helped prove me wrong.
On a university note, I dislike the continuous need to increase student fees. Rising tuition costs are a real problem. Student loan debt continues to rise due to increased student fees. Less students can afford it, more debt is issued. The salaries of professions (as well as number of available college degree caliber jobs) aren't rising as quickly as tuition costs and student debt is building. Currently student debt can not be forgiven even in bankruptcy.
This is no different than bankers providing loans on more house than people should have been approved for. People say every person needs a college education, what they really need is the right level of education as a fair price. Taking out $80k for a four year degree and paying $150k over the life of the loan for a career that pays on average $50k a year during the life of the loan isn't the correct equation.
Depending on what career they chose, community college or trade schools would be the more appropriate venue. This would likely impact ASU negatively, but it would be better for the students involved and our nation.

Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
I don't think anyone on this board would argue against honoring Jerry Moore in the highest possible manner. Whether that is a statue, naming something (field, stadium, road) after him, or enshrining him in some sort of ring of honor - that's not up to me. My main point of contention is the suggestion that we raise student fees to pay for it. I have no doubt that App could raise the money through private donations to cover the cost of any type of statue or honor that they want to bestow on Coach Moore. I'd be in for a fair amount today, if asked.

Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
Student fees should never be used to build a statue! I like the idea and would definitely contribute. But not through student fees.
The cost of a statue would be less than $100K. Add another $25K for the site prep and I think they could pass a hat at the first 2 home games and come up with the needed money. I want Jerry and Margaret to be here to see it. 2021 could be too late.

I would guess an appeal to his former players would generate a tidy sum toward erecting a statue.

Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
I am sure that the cost of a statue would be like a typical government project- the cost is way over what one would expect. And it would get paid. Intelligent folks would look at it and say, "Did we really pay $X for that thing"? I agree with a lot of the others on this thread. For one, I am the parent of a college student and even though he has loans to repay I know who will undoubtably help- mom and me. When I was a student at App a million years ago I to had NO problem spending mom and dad's money.
I love this school and in particular the football program but as far as facility upgrades go, the students and taxpayers should not foot the bill (at least not the brunt of it). Some things like a statue and a gazillion dollar hanging scoreboard can most certainly come in due time.

Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
Sister-in-law went to community college for 2 years for dental hygenist and makes $60K per year and works 4 days a week. I would clean teeth for that dough. Probably has zero loan debt. Lots of kids with huge debt and psychology degrees working in Verizon or Belk. But they have that coveted degree!bcoach wrote:VERY well said.Saint3333 wrote:I suggest you do some research and compare App to other NC schools.crossza wrote:Other schools are wayyyy higher than 1,100 a student.BTK2000 wrote:Yeah...........Im not paying $750 a year in athletic fees for a statue or more club seating or other extravagant purchases that I will never see or use. Re: We should get a Jerry Moore statue
Yeah, let's be smart about this. My first reaction was that some on here would bitch about the cost of paperclips, and some would, but money for a statue, which I'm all for, can be raised through a number of ways, without having to go to the students. Two, and by the time said "proposed" funds would go into effect, three classes will have attended App with Satterfield as the head football coach.
Makes one feel kind of old, come to think about it. WVApp must be feeling his rheumatiz a little more after my last sentence.

WV feels that way every time he turns on that new fangled box with those moving pictures and sees there are more than three channels. And they are in purty colors instead of black and white. Radio doesn't have that.AppinVA wrote:Yeah, let's be smart about this.
