You gotta know when to fold em. And that time is usually just prior to the other team plating 5 runs in a row in one inning.
It's the 2014 season condensed to one game. TOO TYPICAL of Jones.
We should never lose a baseball game to an A-10 school.

Re: Baseball vs Davidson
It doesn't help that Jones' usual late inning bullpen management tends to always snowball into innings like last night.
rather than leave your reliever in going into the 8th inning, even if he has pitched 2 scoreless, you should put in a fresh arm.
Brill had pitched what, all of 2 innings last year? and now you're trying to stretch him to 3 in the first game? a walk and HBP later, now you're bringing in a true Freshman who hasn't pitched in college yet? you have more experienced pitchers and that is what you go with? its no wonder the inning snowballed the way it did. each pitcher that came in afterward was pressed into more stressful situation than the first

Disappointing to say the least to see another late inning collapse. I'm a bit wary of the "piggy back" system Billy proposed in his teleconference. Let's just play the games normal and see what happens. Also, in the game notes it states Robert Whaley is out with a personal issue. I had a small bit of info on this but this is obviously a pretty big loss for the pen.
One of the best parts about baseball though is that usually there is another game within 24 hours, and in this case as close as 14. Let's go get one today and come back home 1-1 (tomorrow's game vs. NC State has been cancelled).

We'll see Thurber today. He pitched in the Sunday scrimmage. Whaley will be out for a period of time.BUTCH1991 wrote:Similar bullpen questions to last year. Why use these young guys in the 8th when you should go to your experienced setup man in Thurber and then hopefully Whaley in the 9th. Instead, at best, it will be tied at the end of 8.
Most likely Dallas DeVrieze will start today. Believe we switched to Springs at last minute due to possibility that we won't play Sunday.

Coach Jones is showing signs of consistancy.....Constantly donig the wrong thing .
He is hurting the whole team .
He needs to change his approach/consistancy !

Re: Baseball vs Davidson
You do realize this "piggy back" system is very common in college baseball for the first few weeks, right? Pollard did the same thing to keep arms healthy in the cold. Jones is trying to find some new options for the bullpen since we struggled so much last year. Just like with football there will be some growing pains with the young guys.94App wrote:Disappointing to say the least to see another late inning collapse. BTW we won 5-2 over Nova today with bullpen getting us out of trouble late.

Re: Baseball vs Davidson
Friday was a bad loss, but I don't blame Jones. The 8th inning had five runs on two hits with four different pitchers. Jones made switches when he needed to. The pitchers just didn't get it done. FYI, Whaley is out for the time being so add him to the list of players who are out (Nunn, Holmes, Leach, Stroup)
Today was better late in the game, STill some hair-raising moments, but they pulled through. Hopefully they'll take that into High Point and then really gain some confidence next weekend versus Canisius, if it isn't too cold.
