More great pub for us. Nothing screams tolerance like racist tripe.

Is there are dumber word than cisgender? I even had to fight with my phone's autocorrect to even type this. The RA sounds like a close-minded prick, or perhaps he is so open-minded his brain fell out.

Let me see...If your not gay, transgendered, non-male, non-white, non-disabled and non-Christian your a problem? They left off intelligent, thin, good looking, with a home, a job and car.
Nothing screams acceptance like alienation/ guilt tripping the rest of society. We're so open minded we're closed, so tolerant we're actually intolerant, so smart we're really not. OR is it hate masquerading as political correctness?

IMO which is based on my knowledge of East Hall from way back, I'd consider the source and not give this matter a second thought. Who died and left that RA in charge of the sanitorium?
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

The funniest part is that these angry residents are liberals who would generally agree with the jackass RA. They would be just fine supporting a bulletin board like this in an appropriate time and place, but even a Democrat isn't happy being reminded they were born a shitty person as they walk through what is essentially their own home.

There's usually a thread when Appalachian makes national news. If you prefer to only discuss football I'd advise you to stick to the App Football section of the message board and avoid clicking on thread titles like this one.

I assume many of the individuals pictured in the above link didn't get the memo on white male privilege.

Football is a game based on aggression and taking ground. If you support it, you're part of the problem, you scum.

I think the RA forgot to look in the mirror and include "Higher Education" privilege. Any blue collar Average Joe would think that that should have been included.

Whoa whoa, easy, my ears are burning... ;)

Seriously, that's not "shaming." A bit melodramatic, sure. But that's college for you.

Hopefully Chancellor Everts will address this RA very quickly, removing anyone responsible or associated asap. Her reaction needs to be swift, regardless of intent. If you want to address this "campaign" in the tunnels, or request access to a space on Sanford Mall to put up a booth with these banners, or reserve a room in Plemmons to hold a Q&A or rally then this RA is certainly welcome to do so. The line gets drawn when I have to see propaganda blatantly smacking me in the face when I pass through the door into my home.

It's abundantly clear when you say things like this that you do not understand the phrase "white privilege". The phrase does not mean that you are a "shitty person" if you were born white. You sound like you have some real insecurities/hang-ups about your ancestry when you say things like that. The real purpose of the idea is to recognize that, on the whole, minorities do not have as many opportunities as white people in this country. If you can look at the relevant statistics and still deny that, then and only then, are you a "shitty person".

You know me personally, and you know where I spend my time during the day, so you ought to know that I'm subjected to "white privilege" rhetoric on a daily basis. You're right about the theory in it's purest, original form, but like most political narratives, it's taken on a life of it's own since its conception.

No one can deny the disparity in crime statistics and cycles of poverty among the black people stemming from racist policies of past as they matriculate through generations. But "white privilege" isn't used to describe these disadvantages, it's used to criminalize majorityhood. It's become a pointless blame game directed largely at a generation of white kids who are truly innocent. Just look at the branding: "Check your privilege" -- It's accusatory. The tone and the phrasing are a means for radicals to almost literally say:

"Everything bad that's happened to everyone else is your fault and nothing you've ever accomplished was a product of your own hard work or talents"

The other danger with this radical BS is that thousands of similarly deserving, downtrodden white people fall through the cracks when everything is so racialized. We have tons of policies in place that favor race-based aid as opposed to need-based aid. A large majority of the white-guilt crowd enjoyed the very privileged lifestyle they loathe, and they base their misguided belief system on the false assumption that all white people grew up just like they did.

I have 0 problem with my ancestry. It's the self-loathing, racial-shame pimps like this RA (and dare I say you) who vomit insecurity with every breath.

As a straight, white, Anglo-Saxon, American-born-and-raised protestant dude with full use of all of his limbs, I see value in the conversation about privilege. Not because I feel guilty about being any of those things. I don't. Not in the least. Hell, I feel like I hit the jackpot. But when I was in high school and college, I used to bellyache about the talk of white privilege and institutional racism because I grew up poor. How dare anyone say that I was privileged! I was always racially outnumbered in every school I went to, until App. Nobody evuh gave me nuthin'.

Except I've gotten LOTS. Man. It's really rare that I am even aware of my race, gender, sexuality, etc., because it's all kind of the cultural default. So why bother with the conversation about privilege? Because not everyone got lucky like I did, and by examining my own privilege, I can try to be more compassionate and considerate when interacting with people who have different backgrounds. That doesn't mean shoving my heritage aside or feeling bad about it. And it doesn't mean lionizing anyone else's background, either. I don't think that white folks are bad and minorities are sages who would improve our lives if we would only open our hearts and listen. That's moronic. But it doesn't help anyone to pretend that privilege doesn't exist, and that we all start out life on the same base.

I know. "Whomp, whomp. Look at this white douche over here talking about cultural sensitivity. How are those birkenstocks working out for you?" I get that. But in my mind, it's just about trying to be considerate human being, loving others as I have been taught.

I do know you personally, Gonz, and I know you're an intelligent dude, but I'm starting to feel like you're incapable of having an informed conversation about this. If you can't accept the difference between white guilt and simply recognizing that racial injustice exists in our society today then I'm afraid you never will. A large majority of "white-guilters" loathe their own lifestyle? What does that have to do with anything and when did you conduct this poll?

Of course all white people didn't grow up the same way, but if you are born white there is only a 13% chance that you will live in poverty as opposed to a 33% (1 in 3!) for blacks/latinos. You're essentially saying that we should downplay white privilege because it could negatively affect white families that might "fall through the cracks"? What about the thousands of minorities who slip through the cracks from being marginalized by poverty and terrible schooling?

I blame values taught in the home or lack thereof, not the color of someone's skin, religion, etc.

Yeah he incorrectly put me on Team White-guilt too. Not sure why you like talking about it so often. Maybe you should start investigating your sub conscious a little. But I do think this bulletin board is absolutely ridiculous
