This hire shows that your age and your coaching tree is more important in moving up in the world of college basketball than your actual success. Will Wade is a good coach. He has done a good job in 2 years at UTC. He hasn't proven himself to be a great coach. He isn't even the best coach in the SoCon.

Mike Young at Wofford is the best coach in the SoCon. Bob Hoffman at Mercer with a still-fresh win over Duke in the Tourny is probably the 2nd best coach right now in the SoCon. I would consider Duggar Baucom of VMI and the Citadel the 3rd best coach for what he has accomplished with such few resources.

Will Wade is the third or forth best coach in an automatic-qualifier conference and he was just offered a big-time job. College basketball is a strange world.
Clearly the folks at VCU are looking for a seamless transition and want someone familiar with the program and the style of play. Not a shocker.

Exactly. Pretty common approach at a successful program. Might have thought they'd offer it to Mike Rhoades first, but maybe he didn't want to leave Rice after one year, or maybe they just preferred Wade.

Multiple sources including ESPN are now reporting that Minnesota assistant Dan McHale will become the next head coach at Eastern Kentucky.

Former NBA coach Avery Johnson has been hired to become the head coach at Alabama.

The 50-year-old Johnson, an ESPN analyst, is from New Orleans and played in the NBA. He coached the Dallas Mavericks from 2005 to 2008 and the Brooklyn Nets from 2010 to 2012.

Bobby Knight's contract at ESPN will not be renewed. The sharp-tongued, 74 year-old curmudgeon has had no printable comment.

Actually, I became a Bobby Knight fan the day Bobby Cremins' team arrived in Bloomington for their NCAA tourney game with LSU. Knight took time from his daily Assembly Hall duties to speak to the Apps after their shoot-around. He was knowledgeable about, and complimentary of, their season and talked to them for 20 minutes or so with a minimum of "hells and damns."

Despite his hair-trigger temper, Knight won a lot of games over his long career and has a big coaching tree that includes Mike Krzyzewski. Not too shabby. I won't attempt to defend his storied antics. They speak for themselves.

Chris Beard, the new coach at UALR is from that tree when Knight was at Texas Tech.

ESPN is cutting ties with the old-school guys. Last week, it was Bobby Knight; this week it's Lou Holtz. A youth movement is in progress; and all of the old gray or bald heads will be put out to pasture soon.

Well, they've certainly been trying introduce some new blood, at least in the headline spots, when you also include Bilas replacing Vitale on the lead CBB team and Rece Davis replacing Chris Fowler on Gameday.

Then again, all those guys but Fowler are in their mid-70s. They aren't going to be on TV forever. Frankly most probably hung around longer than they should have.

Good...now we won't have to listen to Holtz's ridiculous, hyperbolic crap about his beloved Irish.

Agreed on the Irish talk, but I will say Lou gave the non-P5 schools more praise than anyone else on ESPN. The thought of having Herbstreet and May setting the narrative is hard to stomach. Davis isnt bad though.

Couldn't agree more JT. If it were up to Herbstreit and May we would discuss about 10 to 15 teams and put the rest on the "Ocho" with Dodgeball coverage.

Tige Darner's brother, Linc, is movin' on up. He's the new head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay. I kinda thought thought he'd pursue the App job, but he's a mid-west kind of guy. He's back in his "brier patch." Look for him to do very well there.

VMI springs surprise hire. They're paying a nice salary to get Dan Earl from Navy! The guy does have some previous ties to the Roanoke Valley and I-81.

....nor will we have to listen to Sid the Sloth. Lou is a smart man but between the Notre Dame stuff and the speech it was oft times painful to listen.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Herbstreit is still a putz. App could win the national playoff and he'd still be critical.

One more time: Herbstreit vs. Michigan: 0-4 ASU vs. Michigan: 1-1 'Nuff said.
