Sun Belt releases 2015-16 basketball schedule

Unread post by T-Dog » Mon Apr 13, 2015 12:15 pm

App State gets BYE as a travel partner. We got royally screwed. There better be a mandate for teams scheduling a second game each week they play only App State.

FYI, there's still 5 games TBD, all of which involved the in-state rivalries.

This reeks of the membership disagreeing, so they make the most basic schedule possible and instead of having many slightly-peeved members, they rather deal with the nuclear meltdown from one member while appeasing everyone else.

We better get a good explanation for this crap.

Wow. That is really bad. By a quick count, that's 10 times where App plays a game on short rest (1-2 days, usually 1) that had a bye on the previous SBC game day.

Small consolation is that we get four Thursday games vs. teams that had to play on Tuesday, though two of those are on the road.

I also like the fact that our away games are back to back in the same state. It should reduce travel and we may find that to be worth the trade off.

I was able to update the main schedule page to show the conference schedule. I'll update it further once we have announced our non-conference games. I also noticed what hapapp mentioned in that all of our travel games at the very least are games within the same state, so I do at least applaud the Sun Belt for that, as it should help us with travel costs to a degree.

We first have to assume that he disapproves of the schedule.

I'm not sure what it is some of you expect the Sun Belt to do. The conference has two basketball-playing schools in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia. We're the outlier. Until the conference either adds a school within our geographic footprint or subtracts a member, we're always going to be the travel partner of the school called "open date." We knew this going in.

It's not that hard. Start conference play a week later & move some games to Monday/Tuesday to give App a more level playing field. It can't be perfect, but it can be better.

Football schedule is fine. From a competitive standpoint, we get four games with extra rest, and no games where our opponent gets extra rest. From a marketing standpoint, we get at least two primetime national TV showcase games. In short, we got the exact schedule you would expect from a team the Sun Belt expects to be one of its headliners this year.

The discontent comes from people discovering that the days of every home game being at 3:30 pm on Saturday are over.

That's what I figured. I am personally excited about the prime time games on Thursday night, especially one of them against Georgia Southern.

Moving games to Monday for other schools would take them off of Saturdays right? I wouldn't support less Saturday games for any school as those are easier for students and alumni to attend.

I think we are without a travel partner right now and that was the price of admission. I'm not thrilled about it but I'd rather be at the dance without a partner than not even invited to the dance and end up slumming it with Western.

Under the category of "you learn something new every day". I am slightly north of 50, been an ardent sports fan all of my life, pretty much know sports inside and out (reminded of that by my wife when I forget life's other details), but I must admit that up until a few months ago I had never heard of a travel partner. How exactly does this work? If we had a travel partner do we actually travel together and share costs?

It simply means that teams are grouped by their proximity to one another. So, when we go to play Troy in the same trip we will bus to USA, UL and ULM are paired, ASU and UALR, etc. It cuts down on travel costs. Since we have no one in our vicinity, teams get a bye rather playing another game against our nonexistent travel partner.

App pushed back hard against this schedule. It fell on deaf ears.

He knows now but he was still at Mizzou when this was put into place. He is not hAPPy and he and Fox will be talking to the PTB about this.....however he was encouraged that some/any of us were upset enough to write the SBC to express our concerns.

ASU has 3 games Home on Saturday where their opponent has NO game scheduled for earlier in the week.

ASU has 3 games Away on Saturday where their opponent has NO game scheduled for earlier in the week.

ASU has 2 games Home on Saturday where their opponent has a game scheduled for earlier in the week on Tuesday.

ASU has 2 games Away on Saturday where their opponent has NO game scheduled for earlier in the week on Tuesday

NO other team has that issue.

I just posted this so those reading could really understand what we were talking about and how we got screwed.

Perhaps, but we really won't know the impact until we play the schedule. I do like the fact that the travel scenario is improved. I also seriously doubt that anyone will really care that we don't like the schedule. It works for the other ten schools and I doubt they will express much more than the recognition that it isn't very favorable to us.
