Rick is the major reason I became so active at Appalachian State. Quite a few years ago, the phone rang at our house (that tells you something about how long ago it was) and my husband answered.
"This is Rick Beasley," said the voice on the other end of the line. "We're trying to round up some of our Asheville boosters to help us get more people involved in Yosef. Would you be interested in joining us for lunch at Tripp's?"
My husband's response was classic. "I believe you've got the wrong person. I didn't get the sports gene. You want to speak with my wife." [hands phone to me]
In the decade that has passed, Paul and I have both become ardent fans of all things Appalachian. One call turned an average donor into a lifetime fan. One call ... maybe as long as two minutes ... just one call ... and a decade of friendship.
Thanks, Rick (and Diana) for being the stellar people that you are and caring enough to give "just one call" to so many people. Appalachian is a better place because of you.
If serving is beneath you, then leading is beyond you.
