Big East may be expanding.
Because of rumblings of more moves over the weekend, the Big East may be looking to add one Football team, Umass has been mentioned and the Big East may be contemplating their soon to have addition of Villinova.

Yeah I know, but from ASU's standpoint, if ECU did leave ConfUSA then that leaves the conference needing another team, and possibly picking us, who knows?cbarrier90 wrote:Can't wait to watch ECU get passed over for the upteenth time...

C-USA with ECU >>>>>>> C-USA without ECU, and who knows where the new Sun Belt fits in that mix.Deano wrote:Yeah I know, but from ASU's standpoint, if ECU did leave ConfUSA then that leaves the conference needing another team, and possibly picking us, who knows?cbarrier90 wrote:Can't wait to watch ECU get passed over for the upteenth time...

Maryland is apparently gone.

I have to say that I am a little surprised at Maryland leaving the ACC, I know the Big Ten is a better Football conference than the ACC but with the huge exit fees that the ACC has and the huge lucrative TV deal that the ACC just signed, I'm surprised that the Big Ten can offer more incentives than what they had with the ACC.

Re: Big East may be expanding.
MD is gone, presser at 2:30PM. Rutgers presser scheduled for tomorrow. Both to Big 10.
That means 1-2 teams could be leaving the Big East.... assuming that UCONN goes to the ACC. Talk is all over the board on what BE would do, but prevailing wisdom indicates one west team to shore up Boise, and one east team... ECU? Could also go with two teams from the east coast.
This only affects us if a CUSA team gets called up to the Big East. CUSA takes a sunbelt school (WKU or MTSU likely) leaving a spot in the Sunblet. I still think CUSA is a long shot, but if ECU leaves, UNCC needs a rival and a travel partner. I think that UNCC and ODU would consider this.
One thing is certain: Big East and ACC both will be making moves... and Big 12 may recuit some teams if they feel the ACC is vunerable. Could get real interesting.
At the end of the day... this opens the door a crack for folks to look at Appalachian State again...

Re: Big East may be expanding.
This might create another clamor for conferences to grab the schools that were on the table the last round but did not get invites.
Sunbelt and CUSA could attempt to secure schools to insulate themselves. But, it could also mean that ND commits all sports to ACC and that's that... dont' think so though. I think at least 2 CUSA or MAC schools get moved around when all is said and done.

Re: Big East may be expanding.
If it doesn't happen this time, it never will I don't think. It's darn near impossible to come up with a plausible scenario that doesn't involve the raiding of C-USA. If that raiding happens, and we don't go FBS because of it, it's time to stop thinking it ever will happen.GoAppsGo92 wrote:At the end of the day... this opens the door a crack for folks to look at Appalachian State again...

Re: Big East may be expanding.
Wouldn't be surprised if the Big 12 gave a call to Cincinnati and Louisville. Connecticut is as good as already invited to the ACC. The Big East may struggle to survive this round.appmaj wrote:9 Big East Football schools in 2013?

South Florida
UConn
Also heard some chatter on the radio this morning that the $EC might be ready to go after Florida St. and Miami, although I can't see Florida allowing that to happen. The ACC may not lose just Maryland by the time this is all said and done.

New ACC tv deal gives 15 million per school. Big 10 is 24 million per schoolDeano wrote:hapapp wrote:Maryland is apparently gone.

Let's correct terminology used here.Deano wrote:I have to say that I am a little surprised at Maryland leaving the ACC, I know the Big Ten is a better Football conference than the ACC but with the huge exit fees that the ACC has and the huge lucrative TV deal that the ACC just signed, I'm surprised that the Big Ten can offer more incentives than what they had with the ACC.
ACC TV contract = "big"
Big 10 Network TV contract = "huge"
This is all a cash grab. Getting Maryland and Rutgers means the BTN can make a play to get on BASIC cable in the DC, Baltimore, and NYC TV markets. That is HUGE money from multiple top 10 TV markets.
Also don't underplay Maryland's connection to Under Armour. It's basically the same as Oregon's is to Nike. They'll "help out" with that exit fee, no doubt.
Maryland wins big here. Their fans don't give a rats ass about most of their conference brethren, except for Duke and Carolina in hoops. ESPN will make sure those matchups still happen in the Big 10/ACC Shootouts I have little doubt. Maryland should be a top-tier team in Big 10 basketball on both sides immediately. On the football side, the Big 10 has a lot more names now coming to College Park than the ACC could ever give. That will help with recruiting and fan interest for sure.
What I would like to see, but know will never happen, is for UMD to use some of this money to reinstate some or all of the programs they just recently cut due to funding problems.
Rutgers I know a lot less about, but the Big 10 is a huge step up from what the Big East has become. Big win there.

There's a part of me that's excited at what this may mean for ASU. Then, there's a part of me that thinks taking the Ellis Redding approach may be the way to go.
2012 Realignment Hearings Man: Appalachian State University, your files say you've served 40 years in the Southern Conference. Do you feel you've been realigned?
Yosef: Realigned? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means.
2012 Realignment Hearings Man: Well, it means that you're ready to join the Football Bowl Subdivision...
Yosef: I know what *you* think it means, sonny. To me it's just a made up word. ESPN's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I didn't do?
2012 Realignment Hearings Man: Well, are you?
Yosef: There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret for not going with ECU. Not because I'm in the Southern Conference, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid that said We Don't Do It That Way At Appalachian. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Realigned? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.
