I disagree with the poster who dissed the Daniel Boone Inn restaurant. It is a superb venue for authenic Southern cooking. The food is served family style which means bowls of food are placed on your table and you eat all you want. Lunch and dinner are best.

Re: Comin' to Appalachia!!
I'll also disagree about the Dan'l Boone Inn.
It's around $18 per person which includes a salad, drink, fried chicken, Salisbury steak, ham biscuits, regular biscuits and blackberry jam, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, and coleslaw served all you can eat, and a dessert choice of banana pudding, strawberry shortcake, or chocolate cake after all of that.
The food is good southern cooking, and the price is not out of line compared to other restaurants for what you get considering the quality. My only gripe is the long wait times, but get there early and it's not a problem.

The fried chicken and ham biscuits are the only (IMHO) redeeming thing about the DBI after breakfast. I will not pay 18.00 for canned vegetables. The original post was about their breakfast and it is okay.

Nothing terrible about DBI, there are just too many non touristy way better restaurants in Boone. If you're looking for breakfast go Melanie's or sunrise. The best thing about DBI is their takeout which is about 8 bucks.

If you want to take in some tailgating before the game, send me a PM. We are on top of the Library Parking deck (or as we call it, Liberry Deck) which gives you easy access to King St/downtown Boone, clean restrooms that aren't port-a-johns, and an easy walk to the stadium!

Re: Comin' to Appalachia!!
Personally I think the food thing is generational. I think DBI was one of the only things in Boone in the 70-80s. While some of the younger posters lived in Boone with many more ties to restaurants and tried to stay away from DBI because of tourists.

Re: Comin' to Appalachia!!
A couple of other places we like in Boone, which have not been mentioned are Café Portofino, Red Onion, Peppers, and Casa Rustica. You can check them out on the web to see if the types of food they offer match up to your palate. Like many others have said, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices that have been listed. I hope you enjoy all but the outcome of the game.

Re: Comin' to Appalachia!!
Depending on the person, it may not be easy. For a really easy hike, but not as high in elevation, is Beacon Heights. It's right near Grandfather on the BRP too (the Viaduct hugs Grandfather). It's just past where 221 intersects the BRP. It's about a .10 mile hike to a huge rock outcrop, but the views are very nice. We've taken food up there for a picnic before and watch the sun set. It's easy and fun.appbio91 wrote:Speaking of Beer make sure to stop by the Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone for a pint or two. This place epitomizes the laid back college town atmosphere that is Boone. If you like IPA try the long leaf IPA.
Also Boone has a ton of great local restaurants. Stay away from the chains, not that they are bad but you are here to experience Boone. The Comeback Shack has great burgers, Woodlands in Blowing Rock has good BBQ, Black Cat for the best burrito around, Coyote Kintchen for unique tex mex. Take a look at trip advisor or yelp and you should be able to find some great food.
I'll second or third the parkway that time of year. Head out toward the Lincove Viaduct very cool bridge built around the mountain with spectacular views. Also a visitor center just past and you take take a short hike out there. Mentioned above Rough Ridge is awsome but some would not call it an easy hike. Not too bad but I would say moderate. Looking forward to welcoming you for App Homecoming 2015, shoukd be a great crowd.
All of the recommendations made have been great, and it sounds like the Cowboy groups have chosen great places for events. Looking forward to the game, and hopefully a little revenge from 2004!

Re: Comin' to Appalachia!!
Good stuff Mountaineers! Thank you very much.
Given the many opinions and advice, we have shortened our stay in the Gatlinburg area to one day. We've got a cabin rented in Pigeon Forge for Sunday and Monday nights. Sunday will be spent traveling to Ashville (via the Blue Ridge Parkway) and then thru GSMNP to Pigeon Forge. Monday will be the "tourist" day (and yes, NewApp, we would certainly be classified as tourists!). My wife will want to visit the two wine tasting rooms and there's no self-respecting Cowboy fan that would miss the distilleries - so count me in on those!
Early Tuesday morning we'll head directly to Chattanooga. We don't have to be in Nashville for the Opry until about 7:00 pm, so we'll probably have about 7-8 hours in Chattanooga. Any suggestions on what to see there?
Regarding meals in Boone, I think it will take us a bit to sort that one out - waaay to many good suggestions. We're staying in Blowing Rock, so I'm pretty sure we'll hit up Woodlands. I'm looking forward to trying the Carolina bbq, as we're typically have Texas, or sometimes Kansas City bbq here.
Thanks again for all the great suggestions!

Exactly. I'm sure yankees would love Green Giant's best green beans as they dine at DBI.mtnjax wrote:Southern enough is growing up NOT eating store bought canned vegetables because your mother and grandmother have their own gardens and canned their ownNewApp wrote:You are just not Southern enough.Gonzo wrote:Canned vegetables are not an authentic Southern experience.NewApp wrote:I disagree with the poster who dissed the Daniel Boone Inn restaurant. Re: Comin' to Appalachia!!
One note on the tomato-based thing: Yes, Western NC BBQ sauce does contain tomato (well, ketchup) and is generally referred to locally as tomato-based vs the Eastern NC vinegar-based, but Western is still mostly vinegar. It's got a red tint and more sweetness (brown sugar is usually added in addition to ketchup), but the bulk of the flavor is still vinegar tang. Which makes sense, since vinegar outnumbers ketchup in the recipe 3 or 4 to 1.S.Lewis15 wrote:/\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:snip... Of course you must have Carolina style BBQ. You're visiting the western part of the state which if memory serves me right tends to be more ketchup based (Help me out fellow Mountaineers). All food in the south is good. Period. Ha-ha....Snip.
Correct on the BBQ. Western NC shredded pork BBQ has a tomato based sauce, while Eastern NC has a vinegar based sauce. Cookout serves Eastern Style BBQ.
I've found when you talk to out-of-staters and tell them about tomato-based sauce, they tend to expect either KC, Memphis, or St. Louis style sauce. Western is closer to Eastern than it is to any of those.
Other differences (and these are usually but not always the case): Eastern tends to be whole-hog and finely chopped. Western tends to be shoulder-only and chopped more coarsely. The slaw tends to be different, too, with Eastern opting for whiter, milder slaw and Western opting for tangier vinegar slaw. You often have the option for "red slaw" in Western spots, in which they mix in a touch of the sauce for tang and color.
Anyway! Probably more about NC bbq than you needed to know, Poke!
I agree with everything said above. You've gotten swell recommendations. Happy you're making the trip. I have a lot of respect for Wyoming. I hope the weather and the leaves are pretty for you, and the only disappointment you leave with is what the scoreboard says at the end of the 4th quarter. I think we still owe you one from the shellacking you gave us in '04
