"ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
Some of you know I've been involved in an effort to bring a beer garden to KBS. While that effort is ongoing (I'll update when there is more to tell), the University is essentially testing the waters next Friday night at 6:30 with "ApptoberFest," on Duck Pond Field. The link is below.

As someone who has worked with athletics on this for the last 6 months, I can tell you a robust turnout for this event from Alumni would go a long way toward aiding my efforts. If you're going to be on the mountain, please consider coming out for it.

Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
I really like the idea. I saw where the 49ers implemented something similar this year with a $20 all you can eat and drink (alcohol beverages too) 2.5 hours before kickoff. It was modeled around a beer garden type setting in an open pavilion.
I think something like this could go a long way at App during home games especially with the craft beer fans. Hopefully it has a great turnout.

Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
I was reading an article about a Division III school that has one of those. I was thinking t would be cool if we had an elevated terrace bridging the east stands to the endzone seats when they expand and do something like a beer garden.
Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
man that sounds like so much fun, wish they had tried this when I was in collage, of course, that would the mid 80s when the administration did absolutely nothing to promote any kind of sporting event.

On going as bringing beer sales to the stadium? Or you are trying to bring this type of event to the stadium before games?
I am a craft beer enthusiast and advocate. "Traditional beer" is boring and bland, and the High Country and Boone are home to some wonderful craft beer artisans.
HOWEVER, Are you saying or advocating for BEER SALES AT THE ROCK for game day?
NO, NO, NO, AND AGAIN NO.
If someone wants to have a beer at their tailgate and enjoy one then I say yes and I agree. I have them myself, but beer sales of any kind in the Rock is not a wonderful idea.
One of the main reasons I come to the Rock is the atmosphere. One of the reasons that I do not attend games in Morgantown any longer is the presence of beer sales in the stadium.
This will only allow a new revenue stream for ASU, and it will bring more agnst and public safety issues for the people attending games.
Last year in Morgantown I was privileged to see TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma in person. At each of these high profile games, next to me, beside m, and in front of me, people were intoxicated. Rude, loud, obnoxious, passing out, getting sick, disturbing others. And you are advocating for this type of environment for the Rock?
Can we handle this? Do you want this in your stadium? Please let me know what you are asking for.
I am not an anti-alcohol my any means, I do not want it sold at an amateur porting event.

Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
You must not have ever been in the student section ever... If someone wants to get trashed before the game selling 5/6 dollar local beer isn't going to change that. All one needs to do is look for the tiny bottles in the bathroom. It has been talked about over and over again on this board so I am sure this will take off, but the rule is 3.5 hours before a game well students (if they want a good seat) have to be in about 2 hours before game time, thus drinking a lot fast happens, plus sneaking in alcohol to keep the buzz going. Also don't act like it is not sold in the stadium because it is, it is just not sold to the "peions" in the stadium.WVAppsfan wrote:On going as bringing beer sales to the stadium? Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
Two points:
1. I don't think the goal is to have beer available throughout the game at KBS - I think it would only be in a designated area (the beer garden) at halftime - the beer would have to be consumed within the designated area.
2. A $6 or $7 beer available for halftime only (20 minutes) is hardly going to turn our stadium atmosphere into WVUs'. (thankfully)

Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
I'm sorry you've had bad experiences at WVU games, and believe it or not- you aren't the first person who has brought up those concerns. So naturally I looked into them some time ago.WVAppsfan wrote: and it will bring more agnst and public safety issues for the people attending games.
Since the beginning of the year I've contacted Athletic Directors, Deans, conduct officers and police from universities such as UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, Kent State, Louisville, Troy, WKU, and yes, even West Virginia. They're all saying the same thing.
Not only have beer sales not increased alcohol-related belligerence in-stadium, in many cases it has actually decreased them. It turns out, regulation of a substance actually works more effectively than prohibition of it. (for reference- the 1920s).
In addition to what I've gathered from university administrators and police, there is a wealth of information online regarding the issue which I highly suggest becoming informed on before breaking out the caps lock. Below are two.

After extensive research, I believe there is both a right way and a wrong way to execute something like this. A contained beer garden with a drink limit, ID checks and 3rd quarter closing time could foster responsible drinking habits in a way that our intense pre-gaming and mini-bottle culture currently does not.

Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
Not sure if you made it to the ODU game or not, but those who were not there, they had a really cool bar area under the endzone structure. Could not really see the game but the place was packed. Sure for all different kind of reasons. Long story, packed house and alcohol flowing. Saw no behavior issues at all, but the money was flowing well. I am sure this adds 100k+ to the bottom line per year. Way worth it, IMO. Hopefully the people you are working with saw what they had.
Just a note, there were no restrictions, other than of course id check. Had a few liquor bars set up and generic beer. Bet you could do craft sales for 8-10 each. Thought it was really nice actually.

I would rather the folks around me drink a hearty beer than sneak in mini liquor bottles like hooligans.
I've seen plenty of drunk behavior at KBS and it wasn't from a legally purchased beer.

Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
I hope we do not scare off any alumni from attending the APPtoberfest because of the performing band's name. I just visited YouTube to see if there was any video showing the band and I initially typed in the name incorrectly (Bantam Rooster Band). Look at the name of their album and their song titles. I thought to myself, "Wow, I can't believe ASU agreed to let this band perform on campus". Then I typed it in correctly (Bantum Rooster Band) and was relieved to see a more appealing band and playlist. Not sure if any other alumni would be as curious as I. Our annual class of 1981 Guys Weekend crew will definitely be there. Can't wait!

Re: "ApptoberFest" Alumni Beer Garden
I spoke to several officials at the University yesterday and I asked them about the beer sales for the future at KBS. They each said there are no intentions of selling beer in the future. I hope your event goes well, just not future beer sales for the stadium. Including a beer garden. I can not say enough how much I am against this.

They are a good band based out of Asheboro. They play a variety of dance, party, funk, & classic rock. One of the band members graduated this spring from ASU and now DJs on Rock 92. I think most will like their show.GOAPPS37 wrote:I hope we do not scare off any alumni from attending the APPtoberfest because of the performing band's name. Anyway we could do one of these on the weekend of the Halloween game too?
