ODU Postgame Thread + [New B&G Podcast]

Unread post by APPARJ » Sat Sep 26, 2015 8:03 pm

No matter the weather - it is truly GREAT to be a MOUNTAINEER!

Taylor (or Tyler) Lamb made an outstanding comeback from his 3 INT game vs. Clemson.

The defense was incredibly disciplined, fast and stayed on top of the ball the entire game.

Big C and I recorded a new episode of the Black & Gold Podcast this evening with our take on the game and what it means for the rest of the season.

What does everyone else think?

It seems like the team is on the right track! Let's enjoy this one all the way to Homecoming. See you in Boone, everyone!

Check out the new episode on iTunes or on our website here:

Off Topic
For much of Saturday afternoon, technical problems caused the television station that carries the American Sports Network in Hampton Roads to broadcast the feed of the wrong football game. It wasn’t until nearly six minutes into the second quarter that WTVZ-TV switched to Old Dominion’s home game with Appalachian State.

In retrospect, it would have been merciful to ODU followers if WTVZ had missed the entire game.
Ouch. That's brutal.

"Taylor (or Tyler) Lamb made an outstanding comeback from his 3 INT game vs. Clemson."

How can you be confused about Taylor's name? Did I miss the joke?

The color guy on ASN kept calling him Tyler at the beginning of the game.

Sorry! I got a text during the game that the announcer during the beginning of the ASN broadcast kept saying "Tyler Lamb"

My brother thought he heard them call Ronald Blair "Ronald Brown" at one point.

I'm pretty sure they messed up John Law's name right after his int as well.

Great podcast guys!

Yeah. From the texts we received, it seemed like the ASN crew weren't exactly David Jackson quality.

Thanks for listening!

They did call Blair "Ronald Brown". ASN announcers were so cringeworthy. It was pretty awful

Did you think they were biased one way or the other? ASN is a CUSA network so one would assume they'd want ODU to do well.

I think we all have to remember that the announcers are hired guns for the broadcast. I am glad we could get the braodcast. As far as the game, I have said all season that outside of Clemson it will be difficult for G5 teams to score 20 points on our D. This D may well rival the numbers of our '06 defense. I also thought that there were many on this board who were questioning T. Lamb abilities... hopefully he put those to rest this afternoon. Watching ULL and Arky go down big tonight does nothing but confirm my thinking that the conference championship will be in Boone on 10/22 (as it has for many years). Man I cannot wait for that game.

ASN or whatever they call themselves are a joke. It was a decent quality picture, but everything else was bush league. From the announcers' inability to get names right, to the repeated "replay" of the wrong play, to the down and distance ticker seldom moving past 2nd, to the most bizarre commercial break schedule I have ever witnessed, it was inferior in every way to the old SoCon Sports Network broadcasts. Now I read the local Tidewater affiliate didn't even get the correct broadcast until well into the 2nd quarter  If that's CUSA's flagship network it's a perfect reflection of the wannabe mentality of some of their member institutions, and outgoing commissioner.

On the other hand, kudos to WCCB in Charlotte for getting it right, and running numerous commercials promoting the game last week.

I do understand that the announcers are "hired guns" but if they are professionals, they should take the time needed to study both teams and get the names right. That's why teams publish media guides that come complete with pronunciation aids.

Taylor Lamb struggled for a quarter in the Clemson game and it was tough to watch, but I think he had his "confidence" back by the second half. This ODU game was just a bit of metaphorical mouthwash to rinse the remaining bad taste from his mouth (and cleanse the taste buds of the fans). I have full confidence in Lamb as our QB and hopefully the rest of the App Nation does as well. As a team, we stepped up and looked dominating. I honestly didn't expect as close a game as most seemed to be predicting and I thought the 8 point spread was way low, but I didn't know much about ODU, so I thought others might have known something that I didn't.

The Sunbelt seems to be down again this year, and the door is wide open for our run. Georgia Southern appears to be our biggest obstacle. It will not be a cake walk and we could very well stumble, but I believe that our destiny is in our own hands right now. This is going to be a fun season! GO APPS!

The Sun Belt did not do it's reputation any favors yesterday (outside of our dominant performance). This kind of day is why a Sun Belt team could run the table and not get a look for the access bowl.

The MAC absolutely destroyed the SBC yesterday. I think it is apparent that the Sun Belt is the weakest FBS league again this year. I'm thrilled by our performance yesterday but I don't think we should get ahead of ourselves just yet in selling UL or AState short. Let's not forget our awful start to the season last year and yet we found the ability to right the ship. Both of those teams are capable of the same. AState is playing without Knighton at the moment.

True, was not suggesting that we would run the table. Just presenting a hypothetical. Truthfully I hope ULL and stAte do right the ship. I would rather see good hard fought games especially since we have these guys at The Rock tbis year.

Ha! I was listening to a bit of the South Alabama game on XM last night driving home from the wedding that forced me to miss our game and the State announcer kept referring to them as UAB. He did that most of the first quarter. It's one thing to screw up a players name, but when you can't even get the whole opposing team right....

I think the lack of professionalism stems from the fact that in today's media age there just aren't enough qualified people to cover the number of games being either broadcast or streamed. I might be harsh but there's a lot of "experts" in the booth that just aren't radio or TV material. Some might have been really good coaches but absolutely have no business calling a game.

That is a big one right there.

I am also not sure what sort of salary these folks get and how much time they have to prep. I am sure ASN started this programming block because live football will draw better than a Saturday afternoon movie from the 1980s. It will cost more to broadcast but will bring in some better ad revenue and overall the owner of these stations is better off financially. However this ad revenue is no where near ESPN/FoxSports/OTA networks. I imagine the announcers are getting paid for the game and a bit of time to learn names and info about the schools, but nowhere near the time allowed for the major OTA/Cable networks. I doubt there are as many behind the scene staff to make sure things run as smooth and can keep an eye on the production value. I think still better than nothing, and with all the options on TV, if one has cable or Netflix, we don't need as many Saturday afternoon movie blocks that these stations would be carrying in lieu of the football and basketball ASN is programming.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.
