Looking at Wyoming

I spent part of Sunday looking at Wyoming's stats. Yes they're 0-4 and all are bad losses, but they're averaging 400 yards a game (230 rushing, 170 passing) on offense. But what has killed them is being 8/13 in the red zone. Three of those were due to downs and the other two were missed field goals.

Defensively they're giving up 430 yards (200 rushing, 230 passing) so it could be a big game for Cox, Upshaw and Lamb.

The only other stats that looked bad was that Wyoming 0/3 on field goal attempts. Yeesh.

The Cowboys are coached by Craig Bohl, who took NDSU to three National Titles before taking the Wyoming job. He's got a tough slog going forward as Wyoming is very young. 7/8 of the defensive secondary two-deep are freshmen. 4/8 on the defensive line.

Vegas is bullish on the Apps as the line opened at -16 and is now at -23.

Per the Wyoming message board, they lost their starting running back for the game, the little I have read about them is their defense is very young, and hasn't played very well, talk is, they are really small on the defense, and basically aren't very aggressive, just try and keep everything in front of them, we shouldn't have a problem moving the ball.

With respect, a correction to your post Moehler,
The Pokes lost their number 2 running back, not number 1. Shawn Wick is out with a concussion, the kid had a chance to become the all-time rushing leader at Wyoming when the season started, but really hasn't done much, and now is out with a concussion. No. 1 is Brian Hill a sophomore. He's had to big games and two pretty weak games. Still, he's second in the Mountain West in rushing.
And yet, it still comes down to whether a very young and undersized Wyoming line can block the Mountaineer's very tough front seven.

Got to keep the pass rush in high gear against the cowpokes, with some blitzes thrown in. Keep pressure on their QB and make him scramble, his stats are not that bad. Looks like he has a pretty good arm. Remember these guys want a W, they are going to open it up, they have nothing to lose!

2nd biggest favorite on the board between two FBS teams this week. LSU favored by 100 over Eastern Michigan.

UWYO is better then they're being given credit for; and Craig Bohl will have them better prepared for us than ODU was. Bohl isn't coming here to lose. Give us a three point win and save him an expensive trip east.

A lot of poor tackling. New Mexico had 302 yards rushing and only attempted 8 passes. Heck they gave up 276 yards rushing to North Dakota. We should be able to run the ball at will.

The Apps have gotta stay hungry. An 0-4 team will certainly be playing loose and being on the road might even be an advantage at this point. If App plays smart and as physical as they did at ODU they should win this game but point spreads don't mean that much when the toe hits leather. As a young team Wyoming should be improving every game and we know they have good coaching. I was at Troy when App turned the corner on the season last year and certainly don't want to see that happen to App.

This is a classic trap game. Wyoming is a young team under new leadership and have had some tough breaks in their first 4 outings. Both programs are still building, and while the stats indicate App is a bit further along in that process, the Mountaineers need not look past this young team that's no doubt hungry for a win.

I will say that having Ga State next week may be a bit of a blessing. If this game was a lead-in to Stink or ULL there could be an element of looking past the 0-4 team to a bigger conference match-up. Even still, focus, or loss thereof, could be the biggest hurdle for the Apps on Satruday.

On a side note, it is nice to have App State football be in a position that an FBS opponent is possibly a "trap game" where App is not the underdog trapping, but the favored team trying to avoid a trap.

Our team is still in the process of earning respect (probably always will on some level), and another beat down the likes of Howard or ODU would be a big step in the right direction. I honestly believe this team is capable of 11-1, but to get there, they have to focus on being 3-1 first and foremost.

I don't gamble so I am not sure but, 25.5 seems like a lot. Agree with MtnDevil, need to avoid this being a trap game. Focus and take care of business

App State has a history of under-performing for Homecoming games.

Last year: 55 – 48 OT loss to Liberty
2013: 10 – 34 loss to Samford
2010: 34 – 31 win against Elon
2008: Nice win against Citadel that saw fans booing the team and Armani Edwards
2002: 26 – 19 loss to Wofford
1994: Heavily favored App State played Liberty to a 41 – 40 win

It is very possible that this team comes in too excited and too high from last week’s big win and this game ends up being is much closer than it should be.

Reading the Pokes message board and their fans sound like they're ready to put a "for sale" sign in Bohl's yard after 16 games (sound familiar???). I think most here would agree that Bohl is a good coach and he should get the Cowboy program turned around but it won't happen overnight.

They look extremely young across the board. We know from the past couple of years that a coach needs time to make improvements. Wyonation needs to give CB time to get his players into his system. The fans should expect a slight progression in play (not necessarily wins) this season, followed by more improvement and a couple of wins next season and by 2017 a complete night and day change from when Bohl was hired.

The Cowboys served as New Mexico's warm-up act before the Battle of I-25. This weekend Wyoming travels to Appalachian State for the Battle of I-80 East to I-29 South to I-70 East to I-64 East to I-57 South to I-24 East to I-40 East to I-81 North.

Unfortunately that will leave them a little over an hour short of Boone, unless they take I-26 to US 321!
