Re: Looking at Wyoming
We cannot afford to overlook ANY opponent on our schedule. We haven't proven anything in FBS yet. You better believe I like what I see and the butt whippin we put on ODU but I think this team has a very fresh memory of last year and know that we are getting no respect from anybody. Therefore, they have to come out on fire. I said before the ODU game that I want to see our guys playing to their ability, mistake free and flying around like rabid dogs and the rest will take care of itself. Well, we see what happens when we show up like that, we kick butt.
On the other hand, I don't think what App Football has done pre-2014 is much of an indicator of what this team will do. Different coaches, different teams (FCS), too many differences to compare to current team other than our football heritage and expectations for high level of play. The best indicator I have at the moment is the trend from start of last year through today. This team seems to have matured a lot and seem very focused. I think they will stay focused for this year because they know they have to earn respect and it will not come any other way.
I am looking for another woodshed day being handed out by the Mountaineers.

I don't believe we'll see a repeat of last year's homecoming but I would like to see improvement in a couple of areas this coming week, namely:
1) Penalties
2) Turnovers
1) Penalties
2) Turnovers

Re: Looking at Wyoming
If you offered me a three-point win right now, I wouldn't consider taking it for a second. We should roll this team. I understand being cautious as a fan, but there's a reason we're a massive favorite. This team has come far enough in the past year that I think we can set the bar a little higher than barely scraping by against one of the worst teams in the nation.asu66 wrote:UWYO is better then they're being given credit for; and Craig Bohl will have them better prepared for us than ODU was. Bohl isn't coming here to lose. Give us a three point win and save him an expensive trip east.asucrazy wrote:Got to keep the pass rush in high gear against the cowpokes, with some blitzes thrown in. Keep pressure on their QB and make him scramble, his stats are not that bad. Looks like he has a pretty good arm. Remember these guys want a W, they are going to open it up, they have nothing to lose!
And why do you say Wyoming is better than they're being given credit for? Based on what? I doubt Bohl was coming to their first four games to lose either, but it happened anyway.

Re: Looking at Wyoming
So five times in 21 years? Not exactly a trend, is it?spong wrote:App State has a history of under-performing for Homecoming games.
Last year: 55 – 48 OT loss to Liberty
2013: 10 – 34 loss to Samford
2010: 34 – 31 win against Elon
2008: Nice win against Citadel that saw fans booing the team and Armani Edwards
2002: 26 – 19 loss to Wofford
1994: Heavily favored App State played Liberty to a 41 – 40 win
It is very possible that this team comes in too excited and too high from last week’s big win and this game ends up being is much closer than it should be.
And some of those weren't "underperforming." We lost the last two years because we were a bad team at the time those games were played.

So, whats the word on Jaquil Capel? I saw on twitter where people were wishing him a speedy recovery. Hopefully its nothing to big, for his sake.
On a side note, I think we get back McGuire this weekend.

No official word yet, but whenever you see people start throwing around the "prayers" and "minor setback, major comeback" comments, you can usually read those as "see you next year."boonetown1 wrote:So, whats the word on Jaquil Capel? Re: Looking at Wyoming
We just need to score more than 30 points. Since Satterfield has been Head Coach App is 0-13 when scoring less than 30 points. 13-1 when scoring over 30. The announcers mentioned on the ODU game. I would not have guessed it.

Capel might return at the end of the season for the last game and likely the bowl game. There is the option for a medical redshirt since he's only played 25% of the season.EastHallApp wrote:No official word yet, but whenever you see people start throwing around the "prayers" and "minor setback, major comeback" comments, you can usually read those as "see you next year."boonetown1 wrote:So, whats the word on Jaquil Capel? The program is getting very Belichick-ish when it comes to injury reports. Everything is either a "upper-body injury" or a "lower-body injury" now.

Re: Looking at Wyoming
To be eligible for a 6th year medical redshirt, App would have to demonstrate that both this year and his previous redshirt year were due to injury. Doubt they could do that since he previously sat out due to transfer rules. Unless there might be some kind of waiver due to Charlotte not fielding a team during his first year.T-Dog wrote:Capel might return at the end of the season for the last game and likely the bowl game. I find this one even more unreal - From this weeks game notes:bigCasu wrote:Couldn't believe that statistic when I watched the replay.bh2oson wrote:We just need to score more than 30 points. • Over the last 73 games, which dates back to midway through the 2009 season (Oct. 3), the Mountaineers are 41-2 when they have scored at least 30 points and just 7-23 when they fail to reach the 30-point plateau.

Re: Looking at Wyoming
Things look pretty bleak on the High Plains. But despite the 0-4 start the one thing the Pokes won't lack is fight, Coach Bohl is seeing to that. I suspect that they will trying to establish the run first and then go to the air should that fail. Offense isn't really the problem it's their defense which is porous at times. I expect this young Cowboy team to have a lot of fight, striving to get their first win. I advise the Mountaineers not to look past these guys. Apply State by 14.
Re: Looking at Wyoming
hard to handy cap their offense, I believe, in 3 out of their 4 games, they were way behind at half, so they probably threw alot more, against a soft defense, and 2nd and 3rd team players. Its been reported their best receiver has severe bruised ribs, he is going to play, but you have to wonder how effective he will be, especially after his first hit to the ribs. However, if the floods come in, and the game is played mostly in an empty stadium, on homecoming weekend, when the players originally thought they would be playing in front of 30 thousand screaming fans, I could see us having a let down and playing down to their level, and we having a closer game than we would like.

Re: Looking at Wyoming
Weather may have a huge impact on the final score and point spread. I have no problem with the current spread. This team has to be considerably worse than ODU and we made them look inept. I am not ready to hazard a predicted score but I will be stunned if we don't absolutely stomp them. They are coming cross country, playing in what will probably be bad weather, they are young and inexperienced, injured, etc. I personally don't see, in any form or fashion a trap game. I see a very focused App team with very attainable goals. We have so much developing depth on both sides of the ball and I forsee a 400 yard rushing day by our stable of backs. Taylor may only have to throw the ball 10 times and if the game is played in a monsoon the only issue I see is taking every snap in the gun. We should cause 3 or 4 turnovers and punting will be a challenge for them, especially if they have to do it 12 times. This could be one of those 28-0 halftime games with a very conservative second half.

Re: Looking at Wyoming
One byproduct of playing well is that the expectation bar is raised. I have no problem with that. Therefore, this week the expectation is that we win big.
If we do not win big then we are not showing up and playing "to our potential". That is a bad thing. That means we are under performing. We just need to do what we do and do it well and the score will take care of itself.
On a note about a previous post, I hope they do try to establish the run. That will fall right into the hands of our defensive strength.

Re: Looking at Wyoming
On the bright side, The Weather Channel's now saying Boone will be partially cloudy with a 20% chance of rain, down from their 80% chance yesterday.
