G5 rankings
Would be curious to see a hypothetical G5 ranking. Wonder where App would be. There are some horrible G5's out there.

Re: G5 rankings
To me, and I may be wrong and get attacked for this comment...Having G5 rankings is a form of already splitting the FBS...aka putting us in a lower division...I feel this is inevitable and will occur soon anyways, but for now let's just enjoy being a part of FBS rather than split ourselves.

Re: G5 rankings
Its not useless. It lets you see where you fall in the pecking order. We had rankings in fcs and after being at the top for a long time we moved up. Now we must stay at the top of the g5 ranking in hopes of getting recognition from the big big boys. Its how it works. I enjoy his rankings. Dont like'em, dont read'em.

Re: G5 rankings
I have to agree that having separate "rankings" is a step toward another subdivision. The idea behind I-AA in the first place was to provide a separate ranking and championship opportunity for smaller programs on a "cost containment" basis.
We all like to see how we stack up against our peers and our peers are G5. I get that and I like seeing it too. At the same time, I want to see how we stack up with the ACC and other P5 programs, so I prefer the listings that do more than the top 25. I can filter for whatever format I want (G5 only).

Re: G5 rankings
Don't pretend to be an expert on the topic, but one good reason for G5 polls is under the current College Football Playoff rules, the top ranked G5 school is guaranteed a spot in one of the top 6 New Years Day Bowl Games Since none of the G5 conferences have a contract with any of the top 6 bowls, the non contract conferences (G5) are guaranteed a spot in one of the top 6 bowls not involved in the top 4 team playoffs which this year includes the Fiesta and Chick Fil a Bowl.

Re: G5 rankings
There is already a codified split between P5 and G5: The P5 leagues each get an automatic bid to the CFP or NY6, while G5s get one bid for the entire group. That, along with the more general curiosity to measure App against teams from "peer" conferences, is why I decided to start writing the G5 top 10 column./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:To me, and I may be wrong and get attacked for this comment...Having G5 rankings is a form of already splitting the FBS...aka putting us in a lower division...I feel this is inevitable and will occur soon anyways, but for now let's just enjoy being a part of FBS rather than split ourselves.

Not able to tell if I like or dislike something unless I read into it. No need to get in your feelings. Not everything you do in life is accepted by others. But I will leave you be to create any irrelevant rankings you see fit. I'd prefer to focus on winning the conference (standings that actually matter) rather than compare us to other G5 schools.EastHallApp wrote:There is already a codified split between P5 and G5: The P5 leagues each get an automatic bid to the CFP or NY6, while G5s get one bid for the entire group. Seems like you're the one whose feelings are hurt. As much as it apparently bothers you, some people do find this topic interesting, as evidenced by this thread. You have registered your opinion that you are not among that group. Duly noted./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:Not able to tell if I like or dislike something unless I read into it. Re: G5 rankings
OK. Done arguing. It's Georgia Southern week. Not the time to argue with fellow Mountaineers. Agree to disagree on this topic, but definitely agree Apps win Thursday to become bowl eligible and be in the driver's seat for the conference outright title.EastHallApp wrote:Seems like you're the one whose feelings are hurt. Early Prediction
App 24
GSU 17
Close game. With a heavy dose of running from both sides I could see this being over at a decent hour. In the end home field advantage will prevail and be the difference maker as it was for many years in the past.

Re: G5 rankings
Unless App upsets a power conference team, we're not gonna be ranked in the Top 25. I hope one day App will be there, but until then, it's fine to gauge where we are with a G5 poll.

Re: G5 rankings
It would be cool if we were to crack the top 25 or at least make "other teams receiving votes". If we were to win out, this could be doable, especially if we can carry our winning ways on to next year.

Re: G5 rankings
I agree with the notion that we will have to knock off a serious P5 before getting ranked. My only real thought process when starting this thread was to get opinions on how we stack up against our peers. I see a lot of bad peers out there. Another interesting list would be the P5 teams we think App would rank ahead of or have a legit shot to beat this season. Bowl locks withstanding we have something special brewing and after this Thursday we might get some serious attention.

Re: G5 rankings
I think we'd have a shot if we ran the table. I looked it up a while back, and it's been something like 15 years since a one-loss team wasn't ranked in the end-of-season top 25. Of course, none of those have been from the Sun Belt.T-Dog wrote:Unless App upsets a power conference team, we're not gonna be ranked in the Top 25. Re: G5 rankings
I think that last line is the key. Even if we run the table out our SOS this year will nail us. I love how the Stink fans love to talk about how weak our schedule is this year when their toughest Belt team was ULM. Their last 4 conference opponents are a combined 7-16 (their entire SB group they've played or are going to play, outside of us, is a combined 10-31 right now) with three of the four games at home. And we still have UL-L and A-State. Granted they are here and that hurts our SOS but we still have to play them. The only thing standing in the way of Southern and an undefeated Belt record again is Thursday unless UGA breaks some of their players. And I doubt that would matter much.EastHallApp wrote:I think we'd have a shot if we ran the table.
