An L is an L
Yes, we were banged up. Yes, our schedule includes all the tough opponents, instead of just one or two. But the fact is that we lost to a team that was better than us (tonight).
It is a loss that likely cost us our number one goal of winning the conference, but one that will nonetheless tell us a lot about our team. We've been knocked flat on the ground, now how do we get up? We could realistically win or lose all our remaining games. We can finish a strong 10-2 and win a bowl game in our first year of eligibility or we can go 7-5 and who knows? What happens from here on will tell us what kind of team, coaches, and yes, fans we have. It's one game. Shake it off. Go APP!

Winning 9 or 10 would be a terrific year whether it includes a conference title or not. Based on the past couple weeks, we look more like 8-4. Hopefully we get it turned around in the next nine days and finish strong.

I'll tell what I am not going to shake off is the penalties. I am much more upset about that than I am the score. It has been going on for years and it needs to stop.

The penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct and personal fouls is microcosm of the general demeanor and attitude of the players, the coaches, by FAR some fans and some of the support staff as well. A lot of people ate some humble pie tonight. No one has arrived. Time to pump the breaks on New Years Bowls. Act like you've got some dang sense. When was the last time you saw Clemson rack up unsportsmanlikes, or even Alabama. Elite teams don't parade around like they've already won something the first week of November.

I agree with the dumb penalties that are being had. This has been an issue for a while as has a weak defensive. Even though I have not commented on the possible bowl games that App may find themselves in, I'm not sure why folks talking about it is a problem. Our team was 7-1 coming into last night and other than Tory and the Clemson game, looked great on both sides of the ball. All about pumping the fandom brakes, but it's cool if folks want to talk about bowl games. Hell,we look good in only our second year in.Appersrule wrote:The penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct and personal fouls is microcosm of the general demeanor and attitude of the players, the coaches, by FAR some fans and some of the support staff as well. I think I witnessed a tired team last night. First one I can remember. I believe it has taken its toll 3 games in 14 days is a tall task .

Ark State has had to play 2 Tuesday night games. That has too be far more disruptive than 3 straight home games. What I saw was one team with intensity, coaching, discipline and desire. The other was a polar opposite.
Also, we are not getting elite play out of our quarterbacking, neither the play nor play calling. It's time to address that. The line being banged up is not an excuse I care to hear whined about. That's not creating the issues I'm seeing.

Everything starts with line performance. We're just not deep in that area.ashugh wrote:Ark State has had to play 2 Tuesday night games. That has too be far more disruptive than 3 straight home games. Re: An L is an L
The line situation absolutely caused a lot of what we saw last night. We were already banged to heck and then Chapman went down. That brought in Collins, who in addition to snapping the ball way too low, was responsible for at least two of the major penalties. Not impressed by his play at all, but he wouldn't even have been in there (at least not at center) if the line were in better shape.
And that doesn't totally explain the D, but a weak offensive showing led to a tired defense. We also clearly just don't respond well to tempo. I'm wondering where that S&C that was so evident early in the season went.
But as bothered as I am by the team play, I'm more disturbed by our entitled fanbase. Man. We can NOT weather adversity.

Re: An L is an L
The turnovers in the first quarter were costly. I'm not willing to say it cost us the game, but the defense looked wiped out in the 2nd half, completely different from the 1st. We take a 21-3 lead into the half and the whole strategy and timber of the game is different in the 3rd quarter.
The Apps looked demoralized on both sides of the ball for most of the 2nd half, tired, and beat up.
The most important thing now is for this team to rebound from the last 2 games. I think the triple OT took a lot out of the team and they ran out of gas last night against a good team. Coach Satt and company need to figure out how to refill the tanks, and motivate this team. There is no reason anyone left on the schedule should score more than 20 points against our defense. November is when college football separates the men from the boys, and these guys are MOUNTAIN MEN! Time to prove it.

Fast question, is Arky State on our schedule again next season? If so, circle your calendar now.

Re: An L is an L
Does anyone know what the players did on the penalties? All 3 happened off camera on TV. I do believe our OL line injuries are really taking a toll. It's hard for a QB not to get happy feet when he's not sure about the OL. Taylor seemed to come out on some pass plays with a receiver in mind and never looked elsewhere. I think goes back to the OL.
Re: An L is an L
This. There is a middle ground to be found between "we are the best team ever" and "the players are entitled and our coaches suck and I'm disgusted." It isn't the fault of fans that found it difficult to show up on a second Thursday game in two weeks either by the way. We lost to a good team. We are still a young team. We were tired and banged up. We didn't make adjustments as we probably should have, but it happens. This team is still ahead of the curve as far as where they should be/were expected to be at the time of the move up. Still the strong chance to make a bowl game if we handle business from here on out and a few extra days of rest before next Saturday will.appchicago wrote:The line situation absolutely caused a lot of what we saw last night. Re: An L is an L
We have all, for the most part, been pretty excited with our string of success. The GA Southern win was awesome but apparently took a lot of wind out of our sails. We spoke two years ago about the lack of O Linemen being recruited and how it would come back to bite us in the butt down the road. We are down the road. I lose my mind every time I see one of those yellow flags laying on the ground after we have made a nice play. To have a play come back because of an unsportsmanlike or other stupid personal foul penalty has gone from a once in a while to weekly trend.
It is amazing to really see the difference in athletes at different levels. While the "star" system can be misleading it is generally a real measuring stick. I love the passion and effort that many of our guys show but the reality is that it will be tough to beat bigger, stronger, faster teams with 240 lb defensive ends and 200 lb linebackers. From what I read and hear we have a great S&C program and good things are happening on that end. Almost none of us (me included) want to believe that it just takes time. I'll admit, I drank the Kool-Aid. We have not beaten a really quality team other than Stink. Last night's third quarter was a nightmare. To give up 295 yards in one quarter is unreal. To keep reading that teams have figured out how to beat us is disturbing. Isn't that why you make adjustments? We were getting beat up the middle, on the edges, over the top. We let Knighten run around, throw to the other side of the field, scramble for hours and find guys wide ass open over and over.
When our defense is getting beat players are not in their gaps, don't keep their assignments and don't wrap guys up once they get past the line. Is this a product of having undersized players in many positions? Bottom line is that Ark State is good. They lost to some good teams in OOC and will now run the table.
All this being said I see no reason why we can't take the last three games, go 10-2, finish with a very respectable second place and go take care of business in our bowl game. Some humble pie got served last night.

Re: An L is an L
I agree our line situation is bad. I have been on the O line recruiting bandwagon since the old MMB days. The defense will probably take the blame for the loss, but the offense or lack there of cost us the game.
As for entitled fans, I'll say I heard many yelling and screaming last night about Scott and his play calling and the effort of the team. They are the same ones who got up and left the minute we started losing. We of course stayed to the bitter end. If you are a fan you cheer for your team in good times and bad.

Re: An L is an L
I don't see entitlement with the base but excitement and expectations. Not unrealistic given our play and now tempered by getting whipped. The South Alabama game last year highlighted the issue of size and depth. Again exposed with this loss. We lost a game. It happens. I'm a realist and expect it to still take a couple of years to get what we need done. I'm predicting wins over Idaho a toss up with South Alabama and a loss to ULL. Hate the ULL game is Thanksgiving. I'm 50/50 with family coming in town.

Re: An L is an L
Well I am of the belief that there is plenty of blame to go around for last nights meltdown. The Offense and Defense feed off each other. Yes the Defense was gashed but the Offense didn't have sustained drives in the second half to keep them off the field. You can look at all of the aforementioned reasons we lost and it is a culmination of them all. Out game planned, injuries, stupid costly penalties, lack of adjustments on both sides of the ball. That being said, its all part of the game and ever team at some point goes through it. Its the teams that adapt and overcome that have success.
