Is it better to gain exposure and lose money, or later reject bowl games due to cost?

I am not aware of any schools rejecting bowl bids because of costs, just like they don't reject the FCS playoff money loser as well.
Too much loss of exposure certainly... It's just interesting to me that we would still lose in the FBS system as well...

Maybe we won't. Let it play out for more than 1 season.

The majority of schools lose money on their bowl games. Some conferences have set up funds to help offset the losses. I know the ACC has one because they helped to offset Va. Tech's multi-million dollar loss on their last trip to the Orange Bowl. I'm guessing most conferences have such a fund to some degree, although I doubt that the SBC could subsidize to the extent that a P5 conference could.

Just a very quick search will tell you how out of whack the system is.
Very first one that came up was for 2010-11
Average loss for the universities was $169,226
Average compensation for a bowl CEO for putting on one game a year was $438,000
Those Universities with business schools should hang their heads.
I am not a fan of bowls but that is not what this is about. This is about improving a system that is taking advantage of college football. There has to be a better way, before it goes away.

Going to a bowl is nearly always a losing proposition financially, but the cost is offset by the national exposure which can translate into better recruiting, more ticket sales, and all of it builds more TV money for regular season games. More TV and national recognitions helps recruiting. Recruiting helps win games, winning games helps get more TV and national recognition . . .

Win conference games, win OOC games against P5 competition, win bowl games. Win baby win!

Things just got a little more interesting in the bowl picture as USA with a with vs. GA St. next week will be bowl eligible. If Troy beats GS on Saturday watch out, we could have 6 bowl teams as a conference.

That happened I think a couple years ago and three SB teams got snubbed. I remember Benson was out lobbying, basically bribing and still could not get the eligible teams in. I think the SB only had two ties at the time.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I think GSU could give USA a scare though after watching them play. Their secondary didn't look all that great against a so-so passing attach from ULL so I'd imagine the GSU offense could put up some points. It will likely be a shootout.

All these possible bowl teams just show how important it is for us to win these last 3 games as a 10-2 team would be hard to turn down in favor of a 6-6 team no matter the location.

Aren't we supposed to be hearing about pre order form for possible bowl matchups sometime this week ? Haven't seen anything on appstatesports.com .

There is an important distinction about having a 6 win season. It means the team is bowl eligible. It does not mean the team is certain to get an invitation. This is even more true for the G5. A G5 team really needs at least 7 wins to be confident, but not assured, of a bowl bid.

This is also where building a reputation with the bowl selection committees will pay dividends down the road. If we buy up our tickets from the university this year, and continue to do so, then should we find App in a 7-5 season or 6-6 with more Sun Belters than bowls, good historic showing and ticket sales will give up a leg up when the invitations come out.

From the e-mail I received on Nov. 9th, "Fans will receive an email in the coming days with a bowl game ticket application"

Probably won't be too much longer.

The difference is that this year there is a fair shot that bowls will have to take teams with a losing record which means that if five or six SB teams get to 6-6 they will all go bowling. I don't know if that's good for bad for us. I really don't want to see us end up in Arizona.

Currently it is looking like the ACC and C-USA will not have enough teams to fill their bowl slots. IF the SBC does have 5 or more bowl eligible teams and we win out, I would look for us to potentially be a fill-in for one of their tie-ins.

Military Bowl, Independence Bowl, gulp! Belk Bowl perhaps potentials as these are all "lower tier" ACC tie-ins, and also where C-USA is a "back-up" conference (Independence).

Personally for me, I am hoping this scenario will play out, as I am unable to make any of the SBC tie-in dates. IF however, we play in a game between Christmas and New Years - the odds significantly increase for me.

Any of the Saturday bowls would be a go for me and the family. The midweek one, no chance. Wont be able to get two random days off that close to the holidays.

If this is true have you looked at other conferences that might exceed tie in eligibility? I think SB would be last choice to fill anything considered more prestigious. I like the scenario though and hope it plays out. We have an impressive team and wherever we end up will be fine by me. Really a great season so far. We need to finish strong despite adversity.

I did for the east coast and MaC. Didn't look at the western conferences in detail.

All other East Coast conferences as of now have a chance to have "just enough" eligible teams for their tie-ins. Dependent upon how the "playoff" field unfolds, the SEC may be short 1 if 2 teams are in top 4.

ACC is potentially 3 or 4 short.

Thanks, sounds like a scenario that could effect us if we get back on track today and win out.

I just reviewed the prices for our potential bowl and they seem pretty reasonable. I think the most expensive was for mid-field sideline seats at the Cure Bowl for $60. I will place my order this weekend after I determine how many tickets I might need for each game.
