My freshman got his first ever speeding ticket courtesy of Boone PD on Friday (the 13th no less). I found out with my older boy that it is cheaper in the long run to pay an attorney rather than take the hit on insurance. Can anyone rec a good Boone area legal eagle? Thanks.

Just call the DA's office and ask them what the options are for reductions. It'll save money for the attorney fees because you can handle everything yourself. If it's the first ticket he can go to driving school and get it reduced to an improper equipment ticket that doesn't effect insurance or anything. He could also get it reduced to a lesser speed then what's on the ticket so that it doesn't effect anything.

Maybe take a different approach and let your young man take responsibility for his actions and handle it himself.

Maybe this is a generational thing, but when my kids were driving, all tickets were on them and they paid the higher insurance costs.

The Boone PD were doing their job.

I agree with this 100%. I received a speeding ticket entering Blowing Rock from Boone. Im sure everyone knows what spot I'm talking about. Right near the outlets next to the gas station.

Went to the DA in person, asked if I could have it reduced, and she reduced it to only be 9 mph over which didn't affect my insurance.

She did warn me that if I received a ticket in the following 3 years, I would have to deal with it.

He'll get letters from attorneys. It's been my experience that you can one or more of them and they can tell you if they can get it reduced to "improper equipment." It has always worked for me. Don't take an exceeding safe speed.

I'll bet any NC lawyer would tell you that a conviction for "Improper equipment" is a non-moving violation.

Your insurance agent would likely tell you you'll take no insurance hit for a non-moving violation.

I work in that business, you may think that is the case, but it is not. Improper equipment count as any other non-chargeable. Certainly I cannot charge points but i will certainly change the tiered pricing since it is not the same risk as someone who does not have the same. We all know what it is, a speeding ticket with a lawyer. If it has not bitten you yet, just wait it will. And thank you from the insurance industry, we have to eat too!

I just talked to two attorneys at a civic club meeting. They both said improper equipment violations have no effect on drivers license points nor insurance costs.
