Has anyone else thought about this?

Unread post by ASUGrad2014 » Sun Dec 06, 2015 9:32 am

I am estatic that our Apps are playing so well! That being said, has anyone thought about how success will eventually affect the coaching staff? My concern is that because of success, our coaches are going to start getting opportunities at bigger schools? I am surprised that Satterfield has not been in conversations for bigger D 1 schools.

It is more likely than not, in my opinion for a successful program to yield opportunities for members of the staff, including Satt. To highlight the potentially colossal stupidity of the ECU AD and his rude dismissal of Ruffin, according to a pissed off and piss drunk ECU fan last night, other than 1 head coach in the last 20 years the average tenure for an ECU coach is about 3 years. We would be collectively burying our heads in the sand if we didn't think that App is a potential stepping stone for coaches.

It does not necessarily mean the football program is doomed, but it will require Gillen to adjust to what could be a new paradigm. I liken it to coaching one-and-dones in basketball, potentially the key to sustained success at this level and within the coaching carousel environment, will be making the good hire and building a training program of sorts. As much as the App coaching staff will be recruiting players, the AD staff may need to be recruiting coaches.

Who is to say? Perhaps Satt is married to the school, the program and the community, but the decisions and offers the will (quite honestly) hopefully face him in the future could involve salaries and bonuses with several commas. If that happens then Satt will have built an FBS program with success and App State football will have continued the winning tradition under his watch. Good for App State, good for us the fans, and good for Satt.

Greed... its what drives folks. With that being said. Satt is NOT a greedy man. Years ago he wanted the head coaching job and was told go get some fbs experience first. He went and did that and had great success. So much success he could have went many other places and made more money. Satt knows App is where he belongs and he will be here for a long time.

We touched on this earlier in the season. As fans, we have to take it as a good sign if coaches are getting picked off. It's all about finding qualtiy replacements. In regards to the staff, my biggest concern going into the offseason is keeping Ledford. 2016 could be pretty special if the staff stays intact.

Mid major schools are just a stepping stone to P5 coaching. Satt and company will be gone at some point if we continue to have good years. When a P5 offensive line coach makes more than a mid major head coach and the opportunity come along, you have to take it. We need to enjoy Satt while we have him.

The only two I'm really worried about right now are Woody and our S&C coach.

Me too. We know we have Satt for a few more years. Amazing what our S&C coach has done in 2 years. Even last year, USA pushed our O line around like they were little league players.

It's unfortunate, however should not be something that surprises anyone. Being in the Sun Belt we are a stepping stone. Sure Satterfield went to App, but that doesn't mean he will limit his abilities to coach at a better G5 or even P5 school in the future. Same thing goes for assistant coaches and strength and conditioning.

After the championship success we lost Satterfield, Elliott, Wiley, and Galloway. All were wanted because of Apps success. It doesn't change just because we are FBS now.

Satterfield could decide to stay, but you can only win so many Sun Belt titles before you look for something better, which would also bring more money to him and his family.

Satterfield is a young coach (Only 42) with many more opportunities ahead.

Let's just enjoy this moment and not dwell on the what could be future.

They will all be gone at some point. The key is for the administration to keep a continual and fluid list of candidates at all times. My bet is that they are doing just that. We are not a destination we are part of a path. Just as we have become a path to the NFL for players we are and have been a path for coaches to bigger programs. When we are no longer part of that path it will be because we are no longer successful as a program. By bet is that we stay part of the path.

I mentioned this in a "Coaching" thread earlier. We were lucky LY to only lose Stepp. We will be lucky AGAIN...but the difference is 10-2 (currently) and a good base for the future. There will be NO shortage of candidates to fill positions that come open. I would think there is already a list.....There always is.

But let me be clear....I am concerned we lose more than we can replace. Continuity is important.

Woodys name is getting thrown around on the Auburn and South Carolina message boards as a DC. We will be lucky to keep him around for next year or the season after.

Coaches come and go guys. Alabama and Auburn both lost their DC's today so nobody is immune. Can't worry about these things... Just enjoy the ride.
