Almost a sellout!!
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
According to the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl ticket manager, fewer than 2500 tickets are left for the game. Appalachian State will play Ohio University at Cramton Bowl December 19th. It appears Appalachian State fans will be turning out in force!
By Tuesday, the Mountaineers had sold out of it's initial allotment of tickets, about 3,000, and asked for more.
As of Thursday morning, about 1400 general admission tickets are still available, and just over a 1,000 reserved seating tickets are left.

We only got 3,000? I thought we got 7,000 each and the town businesses took 11,000?

They never give all the possible allotment at once. 3,000 at first. Once those were gone, they gave us an additional 1,500. If we sell those, they'll give us whatever is left.Rekdiver wrote:We only got 3,000? I thought we got 7,000 each and the town businesses took 11,000?

Re: Almost a sellout!!
If I read this right we get half of the ticket revenue we sell so if we sell 4,000 we only get $62,500..........That doesnt pay for the tape the players use........Oh well I'm still glad we are in this Bowl!

We ain't gonna use $62,500 worth of tape. I am sure it's a better deal than the FCS playoffs.Rekdiver wrote:If I read this right we get half of the ticket revenue we sell so if we sell 4,000 we only get $62,500..........That doesnt pay for the tape the players use........Oh well I'm still glad we are in this Bowl!

Re: Almost a sellout!!
So we sold 3K. Got 1,500 more which we haven't completely sold yet. So we could realistically at the most-not taking into account stub hub sales-only have 4.5K Appalachian fans there? That doesn't sound impressive to me, or to other bowls, even if we sold all the tickets they gave us. What am I missing?

If that's all they gave us, then it's all they gave us. We can't send more fans to a game if the tickets aren't there.MtnMan09 wrote:So we sold 3K. Re: Almost a sellout!!
I would be willing to take a bet that the locals will be pulling for App. With a Montgomery local on our football team, I'm hoping the local media is playing it up that Josh Thomas is coming home. If so, that should help us.

Re: Almost a sellout!!
This is our first bowl, sold the first allotment, will sell the second, maybe the third, and the game will be a sell out. If you are missing all of this, then i'm not sure we can help you. There are so many positives. True, this is not a big payout, but neither were all three of our championships, which paid zero. Remember what those games did for our brand? This game is an opportunity to further sale our brand, attract recruits, re engage alumni, and hopefully boost season ticket sales and Yosef memberships. Don't focus on payout and if we get to bring 5k or 7k. Focus on the many advantages of being on a national stage, in front of a sellout crowd, and beating a well known opponent.MtnMan09 wrote:So we sold 3K. The SBC gives each bowl team $250k for travel.Rekdiver wrote:If I read this right we get half of the ticket revenue we sell so if we sell 4,000 we only get $62,500..........That doesnt pay for the tape the players use........Oh well I'm still glad we are in this Bowl!
We aren't making money on this bowl, but we did lose money in the playoffs.

Re: Almost a sellout!!
A lot of fans including some here were talking poorly about the Camellia Bowl all season so I'd imagine a lot of people on the fence may decide to watch at home. I guess some people felt like anything less than the Peach Bowl was below us for some reason. Hopefully those that do go will have a great time, and go home to tell their friends what they missed out on.MtnMan09 wrote:So we sold 3K. Got 1,500 more which we haven't completely sold yet. I'd imagine we will have even better crowds going forward once people fully adjust to the FBS mindset. That said, we've sold most of the tickets we were given so far which is all we can do.

Re: Almost a sellout!!
We won't make much money, but we shouldn't lose any either which not every can say. Also, outside of 2007 and MAYBE 2006 we lost money on the playoffs including 2005.Saint3333 wrote:The SBC gives each bowl team $250k for travel.Rekdiver wrote:If I read this right we get half of the ticket revenue we sell so if we sell 4,000 we only get $62,500..........That doesnt pay for the tape the players use........Oh well I'm still glad we are in this Bowl!

Of course none of this factors in the CFP payouts we will receive early spring. Last year it was over $1 million for each Sun Belt school. If the conference can win all 4 bowl games we could improve on that figure this year.

Re: Almost a sellout!!
I think a lot of the complaining did not come from thinking we deserved an access bid. It was a lack of understanding how the system works at our level. Our bowls have a picking order but no obligation to pick teams in the order we finish. Folks saw not getting picked second as a snub. I believe once the system was understood the complaining stopped and folks are happy to have a drivable destination. Bitching about ticket availability is a different situation but I agree it would be better to sell out small allotments with more available than to hand back 3000 tickets.

Re: Almost a sellout!!
I don't think a lot of our fans realize how rare a sellout is in bowl season. OUT OF THE 39 BOWLS IN 2014....4 SOLD OUT. I understand the stadium only holds 25k, but a sellout is a sellout, and it will look great on our bowl committee resume for future bids! This game will lay the foundation for possibly bigger and better opportunities. That's why all of us should support this game, regardless if you're disappointed or ecstatic about the destination.
BTW, look at the teams that did sell out. Oregon, FSU, Cinci, VT, Boise, Arizona, Bama, and OSU.
Adding App to that kind of list would be huge, and will certainly get the attention of the committees.

Re: Almost a sellout!!
Can't fault people for kicking around numbers and such. It's a learning processes, and no fans are sitting in the room when finances, contracts and such are being discussed. Might be interesting, down the road, for a kind of "Bowl... how's it done" article or seminar for folks to read or attend. Might offer a clearer picture for the fan base about how these things get done.
These forums (MMB), are a mode to kick things around. I'd say 99.99% of our fans, with various comments here on the board, are pretty excited for what's unfolding with our program and this bowl.
Gosh knows, as bowl veteran, how things get done, and how decisions are made for finance, payout, logistics for team, family and fans, that field has changed dramatically. It will change even more once sanity returns about setting a hard standard for teams with good records only getting to go bowling. (oops I editorialized).
That aside. My butt is in Montgomery and I hope many more of yours will be as well. I haven't' been this charged up for a bowl game since the Tangerine Bowl in the early 70s!
