That's probably the best 5 minutes I have seen from a Carolina team since Lawrence Taylor played in CH. Going to have to be spot on next week to hang with those guys.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 6:56 pmSo far Carolina looks fast, physical and efficient. We better be sound

If a team cannot get pressure on Maye like NC State and Clemson did last year, he will have a field day.

I'm at the game, they look fast and efficient on both sides of the ball. We'd need to win the trenches and that was an issue today for us. Color me concerned.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 6:56 pmSo far Carolina looks fast, physical and efficient. We better be sound

I thought we would win by 21 and we did. I also stated that GW was a better than average team. Their edge guy was very good and they played good football. The air raid offense gives us fits and did today at times. Lots of areas to improve and lots to work on. Also some pleasant surprises. Regroup and get after the cheaters.
Glad I didn't read all this during the game. I knew some would lose their minds if it wasn't a blowout.

GWebbs RB wasn’t special.
Our pass defense is brutal, bad angles, a tackles, and not much pressure in backfield until the last third of the game when depth took over.
We found a QB and have weapons at RB and WR, Oline has a ways to go.
Overall C-. Teams improve the most game 1 to game 2.

For the first time in 5 years I was not at the Rock and watched an App State home game in the privacy of my home where I could analyze and evaluate the game without any distractions. I'm a Burger fan, hoping he was our next 4-year star but Aguilar really looked more poised and better overall. I hope Burger is ok and comes back stronger than ever. Back to the game, I saw a lot of what I saw last year at the Rock and was really unimpressed. I won't be a bit surprised if we are 1-3 after the first 4 games and I absolutely HATE UNC and ECU. Staying optimistic but I think this could be a long season with a lot of off-season changes. Come on App, prove me wrong!

Did any of them work? No. Because we showed no motion prior. We played straight zone on the line (you don't do that with a reverse or double pass). We didn't counter their shade at all on those plays. Sure, we ran them, but they weren't plays we will run against conference or UNC/ECU.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 6:48 pmI have to disagree slightly with your base offense comment. I saw a double reverse flea flicker (that didn't work), a few jet sweeps and a couple other trickier plays.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 6:19 pmI haven't read the last 7ish pages...
I was unfortunately unable to come up the mountain today, but that may have been beneficial. I was able to see the all 22 more often than not. We ran literally nothing but base all day. Offense, defense, special teams.
It was by design. We should have not struggled as much as we did with base, but like I've said all week, GW is better than most think. But, we got the win, showed our future opponents literally nothing, and have A LOT of film for our 2s and 3s to get better...
The 1s have work, but again, that was "by design."
Even outside of QB, I think we saw a lot of 2s push the 1s and that's a good thing.
I think we opened it up a bit. We threw to our tight ends more. If we have lots more in the playbook I'm excited.
I'm obviously no longer getting the play calls. But, I played as Ponce as my OC long enough to know the playbook was nowhere close to more than base.

Aguilar went in because Burger is having surgery soon (likely tomorrow). He broke his hand early in the game and tried to play through it. Right before he came out, he hit a helmet and told the coaches the pain was intolerable. He played nearly the entire half with a broken bone in his throwing hand and didn't tell anybody until he couldn't go any more.

I don't think we'll know timelines until surgery.yosef69 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 7:21 pmTough break. 5-6 weeks?AppStateNews wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 7:17 pmAguilar went in because Burger is having surgery soon (likely tomorrow). Sounds like a 6 week (minimum) deal. Hate that for him and the team. Our third stringer just became more important.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 7:17 pmAguilar went in because Burger is having surgery soon (likely tomorrow). Hmmm.. if 5.4 yards a carry against superior competition is nothing special, I hope all of our RBs have a nothing special type of season.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 7:09 pmGWebbs RB wasn’t special.

Agreed.
Fun fact.. the savior on the defensive line for the recruits of the last 2-4 years barely saw the field (if at all) today while playing for Gardner Webb...
So, everybody that says the 2+ failure of recruiting classes we had (NOT all Drink -- in fact I would say Satt may be more at fault) not playing a role in last years record needs to really look in the mirror and realize one of our "top" recruits now can't even get playing time at an FCS school....
