:D Believe me, living in Ohio I get this all the time. U of Miami is the higher rated school academically and much younger than Miami U, who made shirts about how their school is older than the state of Florida.

Thanks for coming by, 'Cane faithful.

I think that many of us--though certainly not all--were aware that Miami is a smaller school than many realize. Obviously we have some similar situations here in North Carolina, with some thinking Duke or Wake Forest are larger schools than they are based on the profile of their sports programs (both are quite a bit smaller than Miami).

Meanwhile, people don't realize that while NC State and UNC-CH are our largest schools (though for UNC-CH, that's because of huge graduate program enrollment. Their undergrad enrollment is only about 18k), the next in line are East Carolina and UNC-Charlotte (practically neck-and-neck, each with more than 28k students and right on the heels of Chapel Hill, no pun intended), with UNC-Greensboro and App State also very close in enrollment in the #5 and #6 spots.

At any rate, there's a big connection between our part of the state and Florida, much to the chagrin of those of us who've tried to drive around on windy mountain roads behind a Buick with FL plates. :) Lots of the folks who have second homes up here live in the High Country of NC for the cool summers and head back down to FL for the warm winters.

We're excited to have you. And I know no harm was intended with the "Appy State" thing, but it has often been used to minimize our school and we heard way too much of it during the run-up to Tennessee. We prefer "App State" or "Appalachian."

I knew this thread would degenerate as soon as I saw "Appy" in the title. From the tone of the post, this person was trying to engage us in a friendly manner. I saw nothing disrespectful in what was being said. Of course we know how big OUR university is, but I would wager a high percentage didn't know how big Miami is (or Clemson, Wake, Duke, etc.)

I understand people (including myself) hate the "Appy" moniker but the hyper-sensitive knee jerk reaction just doesn't seem necessary or helpful. I assume that 95% of the people having to read these posts (on this board) are App fans who don't need the information and to consistently give that reaction just invites anybody who DOES intend an insult to continue doing it. The reaction is what they want when they do it.

Relax folks. This is a great week and we have a great opportunity.

GO APPS! BEAT MIAMI!!!

Can anyone think of another school (program) that is referred to in the same manner, i.e, a somewhat denigrating nickname so to speak? To me. and I have thought this before, it's like being patted on the head. "Little Appy State". It's really not as a big a deal as some make it out to be but it just comes across that way to me.

Off the top of my head I can't think of another example, other than maybe 'Bama.

It's APP, not Appy. Latchun, not Layshun. Thank you.

That's funny but you generally never hear those names on television or from other fan bases

Seriously, show me where I was huffy. I merely suggested that he might not want not to use Appy. FTR, I don't get offered by the term, I was simply trying to save him some grief.

Vandy and the Dookies would be two other examples. Appy doesn't bother me.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't referencing your post, Jerry.

Personally Appy irritates me ! Second I have never heard that used as much as this year and it's only the thirds game . It has nothing to do with our a school and to me it sounds like your talking down to the university.

I googled your enrollment and found it to be around 18,000. The U is located south of Miami proper on Highway US#1 in Coral Gables, FL (which equates to Beverly Hills, CA real estate). The campus is beautiful with a lake in the middle. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no place on campus for a stadium, not that the city of Coral Gables would even think of letting us build one in the Gables. Coral Gables has a very elite shopping area near campus called Miracle Mile. During the 4 years I was at the U, the only time I would go into Miami was to access one of the bridges to go to the beach.

As a long-time fan of the U, I look forward to playing Appy State. You are indeed a worthy opponent and we are very much aware of how good your team is. BTW, your weather - in the 70's during the day and 50's at night will feel like winter to our players.

Here is to a good and injury-free game.

I spent a lot of time in the Coral Gables area as an undergrad student at App back in the day. My girlfriend at the time was from Miami and we split our breaks from school either with her family in FL or with my family in Salisbury/Spencer (NC). My first visit to Miami came in mid-August and the daily high temps were in the upper 90s w/90% humidity. Wonderful people in her family and the community; ungodly weather conditions. Breathing (which isn't optional), was very difficult for this Carolina boy. You (if you plan to attend), all traveling U fans and your team will not want to go back home. Looks like a fine, sunny mountain weekend with a summer shower here and there. No biggie! ;) I, too, look forward to a well-played and injury-free game.

Thanks for checkin' in with us. You're always welcome here. Safe travels! And, as always, Give 'em Hell, Apps!

I didn't hear anyone call us Appy State on TV, did I miss that? Definitely could see Musberger saying it but not in an insulting way, he's just old. But yes I see fan bases do this all the time with other schools. EZU, Clemsux, NCSUx, UNC-CHeat, & Shamecocks just to name a few. Common place in the world of sports

I used to know some Marshall fans that insisted on calling us "APPY" so I starting referring to them as "MARSHA"

Thanks for stopping by. I had an aunt who lived in Coral Gables eons ago and enjoyed the few times I got to visit - definitely a different world. The last time I was in Miami was just a few years ago to spend a week working in Overtown. We marveled at the fabulous high school football practice fields plunked down in the middle of some serious generational poverty. That week in Overtown was really something!

App is a fairly decent sized state school with a strong academic reputation. The business school at App has boasted the highest pass rate on the CPA exam numerous times. At something in the neighborhood of $18k per year (not per semester) for room, board, books, tuition, and fees, App is an absolute bargain for in state students.

I'm hoping the rain will either hold off or pass by, but don't count on it. Just as a point of information, umbrellas are not allowed in the stadium. You'll want to bring a rain jacket instead.

Safe travels to all you 'Canes fans. I hope you enjoy everything about Saturday ... except the score of the game.

Our fight song lyrics include "Always a win'n, always a grin'n, always a feel'n fine!"

From these words the name "Happy Appy" came into existence which has been shortened to just Appy.

My wife uses "happy Appy" all the time and she's an App grad. I'm an App grad and it doesn't bother me. The first time I heard anyone be bothered by it was on this board. Now if someone says my school doesn't "belong" or is inferior, then out comes the double crow hop, five fingered, jaw jack they deserve! Metaphorically of course! GO APP!

Hope your not basing our campus off Overtown. Coral Gables is a pretty affluent suburb. And UM is a top 50 school.
