Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. The dining facilities are closed. Everything else is completely confusing. Initially, there was a lot of "talk" and now there are a lot of *conflicting * web sites. They need to do a lot of internet "scrubbing." Try doing a Google search. It's a nightmare.
From what I can tell, the facility is completely dedicated to uses directly related to the university. I think they're flying by the seat of their pants until they can get some more decisions made; a complete set of policies written; and a *lot* of renovation completed.
The facility still hosts quite a few banquets, receptions and large group meetings.

Can't remember his name, but the Vice Chancellor in charge of facilities spoke to the Alumni Council back during the summer. He said it would cost more to convert to dorm space than it would to build a completely new dorm. He indicated then that they really had no idea what to do with the building. It could not support itself financially as an inn and conference center, the school could no longer afford to supplement it to keep it open and it isn't feasible to make a dorm out of it. As of now the ASU Brewery is located in the bottom floor of the building and will be there at least until the school year is over.

I think the only think that keeps it hanging on is that it provides meeting space (meeting rooms and ballroom) that is located next to campus with parking for things like BOT and Foundation and other university events that involve off-campus participants. Currently there is nothing else to easily replace that function.
Longer term, I think it will be torn down and replaced with something. Land space at ASU is simply too scarce to not use that area and the existing structure at the Broyhill will be too expensive to convert to anything else. It will be more cost effective to tear down and start over. There is no money for doing anything now, so it just keeps being used on a limited basis at as little cost as possible.

How about converting it to a urban assault facility for law enforcement until we decide to tear it down............or a paintball arena....or allow bands to have concerts there..........

Kind of a sad day for me. I had one of my most memorable learning experiences there at the hands of Pat Patton, Professor of Marketing in 1989...way too long a story, but will always remember him and that place together.
Also, I was lucky enough to have my wedding reception there in 2000, turned out to be a great place for a reception, the food and service was great.
Very sad indeed...

I agree. I spent many lunches there with the recruiters from the CPA firms. I know we have many accountants on this board and I bet that many of you would be surprised to know that around those tables is where many of you actually received your internship or permanent job offers. No, you weren't there, but we (faculty) worked the recruiters trying to get you guys matched up with the firm you wanted or the firm you needed in some cases. With 99% of the students it was a great honor to be selling our "product" to these firms. Of course most of you would have done just fine without the faculty going to bat for you, but it never hurts for a future employer to hear good things about you from your teachers over a great lunch with a superb view.
I will definitely miss the Broyhill.

So - you're saying a professor took you to a hotel and taught you a few things? Did he remind you of Donald Sutherland in Animal House?

You must have never had Marketing-Consumer Behavior under Dr. Patton. It was a pretty intense class. The whole class grade was 1/3 Final, 1/3 Group Presentation and 1/3 Group Paper...He then made it a competition among the groups for the best grades, the best group got an A, second best group a B, and so on. You only find out after your presentation of this tiered grading scenerio, which was held at the Broyhill Inn, at which time you can then ask questions to future presenting groups in order to make your presentation appear better. It turned friends on friends rather quickly. I now know that he did that in order to show what the real world would be like and that in business, you truly don't have friends, only your team against everyone else. In that regard, he gave us invaluable real world experience. I will always now think fondly of that class, which was one my hardest to get through while at ASU.

This is a crying shame folks; a shame and a disgrace for the Broyhill Inn to be razed. Do you think for one second the Carolina Inn at UNC will ever suffer such a fate? No way. Despite the tough economic times, there should be a massive alumni appeal to save the Inn.
