Per NCAA web-site: "The rule in football means that discipline for players flagged for violations will mirror the penalty for fighting. If the foul occurs in the first half of a game, the player is ejected for the remainder of the game. If the foul occurs in the second half or overtime of a game, the player is ejected for the remainder of the game and the first half of the next contest."

Either way, that was a bogus call. He didn't lead with his helmet nor did he make helmet to helmet contact. If anything, the actions of the runner initiated the contact with a late slide. I hate the helmet to helmet rule.

Targeting is not helmet to helmet, it is hitting the head of ball carrier.

It's actually the head neck or shoulder area. And it is intentionally launching ones self leading with the head. Hayes nade contact with the runners shoulders with his shoulder. He was not using his helmet as a weapon. The non targeting call on Critcher two weeks ago was closer to the rule than this one.

It is clear to me that Hayes has started his dive prior to the QB sliding. I've got no problem with the rule but it seems there is some difficulty in its application in this case.

I agree with you it the application of the rule. It leaves too much margin in the interpretation of intent.

Announced crowd just over 6,000. Was that even a generous number? I know NMSU is leaving but how did this and other schools remain FBS? How does their athletic department stay afloat?

Morning paper had just north of 5300, without looking I would think that would
be the smallest FBS crowd in the country Saturday, if not the whole year. Not picking on them, we
would have been low had it been in Boone.

No doubt it would have been maybe 15k but how many schools have 30k stadiums and don't come close to filling them?

I watched the game. There were more players of combined teams plus the band than there were other fans

Went to the game. A few random observations. Las Cruses is about 40 miles east of El Paso. El Paso is a hell hole. The Sun Bowl would have to be one of the worst options for fans! Although about 100k LC seemed small and lots of empty buildings. The announced attendance was 5k. That may have been close. I remember our Thanksgiving weekend playoff games back in the day. We had a few more fans than I expected but everyone kind of spread out. I would guess 100? The campus seemed a little community college-ish. But they had done a very good job with a mixed-use development on the outskirts of campus that would be similar to what I have seen in Atlanta at the Georgia Tech campus included a Barnes and Noble Chick-fil-A etc. It's about 230 miles north to Albuquerque. I drove 85-90 most of the way and still got passed often. The Southwest is so culturally different it was interesting trip. No one really acknowledged me, either to say welcome or to make snide comments. That was a little odd given the distance. Did not seem the LC community was very into the team either. Because it was Thanksgiving weekend and I traveled on Thanksgiving day my airfare was cheap. I would actually probably make the trip again if we play them just for the cultural experience (and of course following the Mountaineers anywhere).

We had a lot more than 100 at the play-off games I attended. The Illinois State game in 2012 had over 16,000 in attendance according to the Media Guide. The Maine game in 2011 had over 15,000, The South Carolina State game on Nov 28, 2008 had 13,712. James Madison on Nov.24, 2007 had over 14,000.

I believe he probably meant 10,000 which is still a little low.
