A look at Quarterback

Unread post by asutrnr81 » Fri Dec 28, 2012 12:55 pm

I have been thinking about this for a while. After this year (2013) we will be in desperate need of finding a quarterback headed back to Michigan to start our 2014 season. I hope we can win big enough in 2013 to get some time for JJ's backups....

We can all agree on one thing...we got to watch as complete a quarterback as many of us will ever see in AE...Harry Houdini welcome to college football!....so this conversation is not about him. (If we ever find another one of him I suggest we get him though).

I think after JJ became "more" one dimensional (after his injury) we actually played better offensively, we got more people involved.

The best quarterbacks out there run "their" offense well. They get the ball to the "right" people in the right spots.

I want a quarterback who CAN run the ball.
I want a quarterback who can read the option.
I want a quarterback who can throw the under 20 yard pass well.
I want a quarterback who will not be so aggressive that they take us out of our offense.
I want a quarterback who can think....and has a limited (number) of check offs at the line of scrimmage.
I want a quarterback who can get me a foot on fourth and inches EVERY time!

Go APPS!

This kid could do all of those things and is at the top of our coaches' wish list:

Unfortunately, he is beginning to get some serious high-major FBS looks and now seems to be a real long shot.

Julian certainly has a major-league arm, but I haven't seen in his video where he is much of a running threat.

I agree with trnr that we need a quarterback who can run. The two quarterbacks we currently have behind Jamal -- Kalik Barnes and Kameron Bryant -- are quality runners. If either or both improve on the passing and decision-making parts of the equation, then I think they will figure in our plans after Jackson graduates.

Walking onto the turf of the Big House is going to be intimidating enough for those two in a first start. Even more so if they have not taken many game snaps.

We don't have much of a history of giving our backups any playing time unless number one goes down. I hope that changes.

We don't have a history of keeping our foot on the throttle. If we change that it will lead for for opportunities to play backups.

That is true but we have had situations where we had a big lead or where it was over and we leave number 1 in. I have never understood that. We risk injury to number 1 and number 2 gets no real playing time.

Usually when we get #2 in its just been run run run option run. never any chance to throw passes to even see what they can do in an actual game

Hopefully this will change with Satterfield.

My opinion to this is if #2 gets quality playing time in '13, then great (other than an injury to Jackson, of course). Otherwise, the team needs to play for '13 and not prepare for '14.

I hope so. That method lost Kam Bryant for the year to a knee injury and left us with essentially our 4th string/emergency QB as 2nd

On item #6, we would do a lot better by taking some snaps under center in those situations. That would help no matter who the QB is IMO.

That is my exact point.....so many teams during bowl season have needed a foot....and ran some read option, or delay or just got blown up because NOONE was running down hill at the LOS...or the QB was not under center.....

I like a long tall JJ under center for a foot every time!

I think Logan Hallock #16 will still be on the team in 2014. He was listed as a Red Shirt Sophomore last time I looked at the team roster on goasu.com. Logan did a hell of a job at Cullowhee this year. I'm not saying he can do that at UM, but just saying he is another possible App QB in 2014 in addition to Barnes & Bryant.

With Barnes coming off suspension and if we bring in a QB with this class, I think Hallock will go back to WR where he would have been if Barnes had not been out all year

I'm not sure why we should be alarmed about the QB position at this point. JJ returns for 2013. Barnes and Hallock are both Sophomores, and Bryant is a Freshman. All of them will be back in 2014. I've always heard (and believe it's a good rule) that we should recruit a strong QB in every class and I imagine we will continue to do that even if we wind up moving them to another position at some later point. Just my opinion, but I think we are loaded with talent at the QB position, especially for an FCS program.

Hallock might have been #4 on the depth chart (beginning of the year) but completing 20 of 21 attempts in his first start is pretty darn impressive. Yeah, it was against a "less than stellar" WCU program, but even they are improving and they were highly motivated.

Our QB doesn't have to be able to run like AE but he does need to be mobile and a legit running threat. I think all three of these guys meet that criteria.

Just my opinion, but I think the future looks bright at QB.

Great post. Makes me feel better about QB future. I just pray that #12 recovers and stays injury free for the rest of his career.
Hey, I just checked the team roster on goasu.com and there is another QB listed now that I don't remember seeing before:

Villanueva, Alex QB/WR 6-0 190 Fr. Newland, N.C. (Avery County)

Does anyone know the story of this kid? Probably a red shirt or incoming freshman I guess.

Villanueva was a walk-on this past season.

Seems like we didn't take our foot off the gas when we hung 70 and 49 on Wofford, 79 on WCU, 49 and 42 vs Elon, 52 on Georgia Southern, 49 on Chat, 52 on Furman, 55 on Coastal, 45 on Citadel, 58 on A&T, etc etc.
Many times posters on here have accused the staff of letting up when we exhausted our selves in the first half of scoring, or the opponnet corrected itself agains our best plays from the first half and we had to adjust the play calling in the second half. That happens to many teams. I agree we have let up in games that ended up close, but there is more of a pattern of not doing so.
There is room for criticism of not subbing QB's enough. We just didn't have the luxury of doing that much this year.
