The end of FBS vs. FCS games
I forget who I was discussing this with a few weeks ago, but looks like the Big 10 is kicking this off.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
And he manages to exclude FCS from Division 1 in the statement, nice. No wonder Western is getting their money now. If this goes forward, its nearly certain the SEC, ACC and so on and so forth will follow. Many FCS schools will be missing ~$500,00- $750,000 from their budgets.
The FCS is dying a slow death.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
I said this last fall. This was a pretty easy guess since it was said that a BCS school playing an FCS school would kill their RPI and would ruin any chance of making the playoffs. A preseason Top 10 team just can't take the chance. That being said I'm surprised UM kept us on for 2014, for now. If they are projected as a top 5 team and we are still FCS then they might still buy the game out. We've got a year for things to settle themselves out. Still it's just one more reason to hope for a move. We're going to miss those paydays.Saint3333 wrote:I forget who I was discussing this with a few weeks ago, but looks like the Big 10 is kicking this off.

Those games are more than just a check, they help with recruiting and rewarding Yosef Club members and season ticket holders.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
I realize that. Should have said that in the other post. It shows that we're not afraid to play anyone. VaTech didn't help much in the other regard but at least we're willing to go to Georgia, LSU, Auburn, and Michigan. Not many others can say the same.Saint3333 wrote:Those games are more than just a check, they help with recruiting and rewarding Yosef Club members and season ticket holders.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
For us its not a check. For teams like Western, playing 3 and 2 in a year while un competative even in the FCS it is.

Western doesn't need help with those other things Saint mentioned. Their program sells itself.GlassOnion wrote:For us its not a check. For teams like Western, playing 3 and 2 in a year while un competative even in the FCS it is.

Theyre still paying off Wagner and his wind suit stipend.

As long as we move to FBS this is really good news for App. As all the big conferences stop scheduling FCS, the OOC pay outs for the GO5 should increase substantially.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
I'm not sure that this quote from Barry Alvarez, a Division I football coach who apparently does not understand that FCS is Division I, has any impact on any other conference but the B1G.

Has anyone else backed this assertion from him?

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
So let me see if I have this straight. If the SBC goes along with this, and we join the SBC in 2014, we wouldn't be able to play UNCC because we'd be FBS and they'd be FCS? Interesting.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
Nice thought, but no, UNCC would be on the exact same transitional phase as we will be IF we accept an FBS conference offer before the end of May 2013.
Both we and UNCC would be FCS transitional schools in years 2013-2014, since they play their first year of football in 2013. We would probably not even take in additional scholarships so that we would have a maximum of 63 and could play in the FCS playoffs and championship game if we could make it to the NC. (UNCC could have more than 63, but would probably decide not to do so also.)
The next year 2014-2015 we would both play an FBS transitional season where we would both have over 63 scholarships and have to have five (or four and once FCS) FBS games at home and be considered FBS transitional, not FCS.
Then in year 2015-2016 we would be full FBS, eligible for any conference championship and/or bowl game.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
Look at the other side of this for a second. Think of all the FCS programs that depend on playing a BCS team if they get in trouble financially in their football program. Just like Western Carolina playing three FBS games next year to pay off some football debts and getting some needed money back into their program because of non-winning and very poor mismanagement of funds. Paying off more than one football coach to leave their contracts early will have to be stopped, and future contracts probably mandated to be very short term. So if their coach does have a good season they are probably gone sooner.
Without the FBS money, many FCS teams may very well fold. If they do not have attendance to support the program or outside money coming in, many FCS programs will just not make it. The facilities of many FCS programs will become run down, and it will be seldom that many make major improvements unless, if they are a state school, their state gives them money or situations like Liberty University where they have funding from religious sources. It may actually help a few schools. Furman may get stronger in comparison to other FCS schools, but they had a long period where they didn't seem to bring in outside money but are now doing stadium renovations, and maybe Wofford, even though they normally play one money game a year. Just depends on their outside support, because most are not going to make it on attendance. Probably not, but could encourage Davidson to offer FCS scholarships and rejoin SoCon in football if other schools are not getting FBS money. Will probably help VMI. ETSU has picked a poor time to reinstate football, this could make them change their mind. Schools like Savannah State are probably doomed.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
I wouldn't be surprised to see the number of scholarships lowered from 63. The NCAA already limits rosters to 55 for the playoffs so that number would seem logical. If FCS/I-AA is truely "cost containment" football, and the two sub-divisions never play there really is no reason to have 63. A reduction of just 8 scholarships for schools like Furman and Richmond would make a huge impact on the bottom line.
Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
Here is a newer article on them cancelling future FCS games. Not known exactly but seems to point toward the year that we are scheduled to play Michigan. We may have no game unless we are FBS real soon.

Re: The end of FBS vs. FCS games
That's a ton of money some schools will have to pay to buyout those games. I doubt any future games get scrubbed. My guess going forward they won't schedule any more such games.
