So long SoCon. It will be great to be in a conference of "like minded" schools again. The worst part is no playoffs this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we have a fantastic season and then have to pack it in. Wouldn't it be great to win a NC on our way out the door?

I just watched the sports report on WLOS out of Asheville. We were the lead story with the tag line "Headed to Division One".

Can someone educate me on why we will be ineligible for the playoffs for 2013? Are we going to add more scholarship players for next season? It seems to me that if we maintain 63 schollys, we would be able to compete for a NC.

Fox 8 here in Greensboro said the same thing...
on another note: I'm happy to be heading toward new and rewarding challenges and look foward to our new conference mates and future FBS home games at The Rock!

It's a two year process set forth by the NCAA. Their house, their rules.

A good friend who officiates college soccer called me about 5:15 pm with the news of our invitation. His source is the person who handles the scheduling of soccer officials, who sent out an email warning the officials to expect changes next year, as he had been informed that Appalachian is changing conferences... :!:

We can't start the transition process and still compete in the playoffs. It's a two year process and I feel fairly certain that the SB wants us full FBS by 2015 due to the schools set to leave. By filing the paperwork before 6/1/13 we will be considered FBS transitional in 14 and that brings us an additional 250k when we play UM. That's my 2 cents on why we will start the process in 13. I do hate it for the seniors but I'm sure they will do their best to make the SoCon teams happy we're leaving!

Up to 400+ comments, and as expected, FBS posters are some of the dumbest people on the face of the planet.

I wonder if our players will still be eligible for individual awards. Would be nice to see JJ have a shot at the Payton.

Great news, but the lack of playoffs this season makes it really bittersweet. May give me a reason to go to the Georgia game.

This may be a stupid question, but does anyone know if App could be eligible for a bowl game? I seriously doubt it would happen, even if we went 12-0, but is it even possible for an FCS school to be invited to a bowl game if they have 6+wins and don't (can't) compete in the FCS playoffs?

No Bowls until 2015.

No Bowls until 2015.
There may be a small caveat here. This past season the NCAA made an exception for UTSA and Texas St. In the chance that there were not enough FBS teams bowl eligible that they could accept a bowl invitation (assuming they had a record of 6-6 or better).

In the end, there were enough qualified FBS teams available so the exception wasn't used but it could potentially come into play for us in 2014.

Last year the ncaa in their bowl contingency plan made it possible for transition teams to be bowl eligible if they were in their last year of transition.

So if they follow that again we could be eligible in 2014.
-------
If a bowl has one or more conferences/teams unable to meet their contractual commitments and there are no available bowl-eligible teams, the open spots can be filled – by the particular bowl's sponsoring agencies – as follows:[1]

1. Teams finishing 6-6 with one win against a team from the lower Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), regardless of whether that FCS school meets NCAA scholarship requirements. Until now, an FCS win counted only if that opponent met the scholarship requirements—specifically, that school had to award at least 90% of the FCS maximum of 63 scholarship equivalents over a two-year period. In the 2012 season, programs in four FCS conferences cannot meet the 90% requirement (56.7 equivalents)—the Ivy League, which prohibits all athletic scholarships; the Patriot League and Pioneer Football League, which do not currently award football scholarships; and the Northeast Conference, which limits football scholarships to 38 equivalents.
2. 6-6 teams with two wins over FCS schools.
3. Teams that finish 6-7 with loss number seven in their conference championship game.
4. 6-7 teams that normally play a 13-team schedule, such as Hawaii's home opponents. Although Hawaii normally plays a 13-game schedule, it only played 12 games this season.
5. FCS teams who are in the final year of the two-year FBS transition process, if they have at least a 6-6 record.
6. Finally, 5-7 teams that have a top-5 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. This was later adjusted to allow other 5-7 teams to be selected thereafter—in order of their APR.

Good to hear we at least have a slim chance for a bowl in 2014. Here is another article I don't think I saw posted here.
