ESPN: Biggest Question Remaining for Top 25- #21 App State
https://www.espn.com/college-football/s ... tball-team
No. 21 Appalachian State: What happens against South Carolina?
App State is well on its way to a second straight Sun Belt title game appearance, but at 6-0 and 21st in the AP poll, the Mountaineers have their eyes on a bigger prize. If they go 13-0 (and SMU doesn't), they'd have a strong case for the New Year's Six autobid. That will require winning at South Carolina in Week 11. So now comes some awkwardness. Can the Mountaineers properly prep for always-tricky Georgia Southern in Week 10 without looking ahead to the Columbia trip? -- Bill Connelly
Interesting on Boise State
No. 22 Boise State: Is all hope lost for a New Year's Six bowl?
With the loss to BYU, the Broncos' margin for error as they try to make it to a New Year's Six bowl is razor thin. So getting freshman starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier healthy and back on the field is important. Boise can build off backup quarterback Chase Cord's fourth-quarter performance against BYU, but he also threw three interceptions and didn't hit 100 yards passing until late in the third quarter. Bachmeier threw for 1,547 yards with nine touchdowns and three picks before his injury two weeks ago. Luckily, four of Boise State's final five opponents rank in the bottom half of the Mountain West in total defense. -- Aschoff

This is just another example of why it is so good to be ranked. All these articles focus on the top 25. We have been written about multiple times this week on ESPN.com just because we are ranked. It really is priceless advertising.

Hopefully folks are starting to realize the big picture and how being ranked helps the program. The amount of exposure a program gets while ranked is enormous.
Give 'em hell!

Being ranked is huge. Same goes for bowl game wins. Watson talks about coming to App after seeing them beat MTSU last year in this article.BeauFoster wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 9:43 pmHopefully folks are starting to realize the big picture and how being ranked helps the program. I have always said being ranked is a good thing. Being ranked 1-2 weeks and then getting pounded does no good. We need to keep going 1-0 and care about November and December rankings the most.BeauFoster wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 9:43 pmHopefully folks are starting to realize the big picture and how being ranked helps the program. The added attention is priceless. It just goes away if we get pounded soon and we are talked about as a team that was a joke to be ranked.
I bet South Carolina fans think it is a joke and feel like we lose before we get to them and if not they will beat us by 20+ points. To be legit we truly need statement wins, including down in Columbia.
If you look at how schedules could play out I would not be surprised if we end up 15-18 range on November 10th, if we win out. That would be huge.

I don't care if it is only one week, we get more notoriety during that week than we would ever spend in advertising. It is a win win situation. The only people who lose if we get beat, like last year, are the fans that have to deal with the blowback from friends and such. The school wins even if it is only for a week. I live in central Florida and I can't tell you how many people talk to me about App because they see we are ranked and know I went there. The ranking gives free advertising every time it scrolls across the ESPN networks. It is never a bad time, or too early, to be ranked. No negatives associated with it, all positives.

Pffft,
After last year, the boys are probably more out for blood against the Eagles than they are about beating the Gamecocks.

It’s the one game I could actually see Drink leaning into rather than minimizing the whole ranking thing, since last years game could be construed as complacency at work.hotrod2001 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 10:24 pm"So now comes some awkwardness. (And yeah, I know it was probably injuries more than hubris, but there’s still a teachable moment in there. “Georgia Southern made us look like a fluke last year. Let’s show them we’re here to stay.”)

Being ranked will help with in-state recruiting against the likes of ECU, Wake, and Duke, teams we used to almost automatically lose out to.BeauFoster wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 9:43 pmHopefully folks are starting to realize the big picture and how being ranked helps the program. Here’s a good analogy: Russian roulette. We are now competing with Four or five G5 teams nationwide for a NY6 birth. Each week we rotate the cylinder. 1-0 mentality. What’s in that one chamber is what you worry about. Who blinks first! This is pressure, amazing competition! Go Apps!!!

Just so I’m clear, being ranked is a good thing? I can’t help myself and I apologize in advance. No one on this board needs another post stating the obvious benefits of being ranked. Seriously how many more threads are we going to have about this. Everybody is over the moon about being ranked and yes everyone agrees we should win every game and stay there. I know I’m going to be pelted with tomatoes for saying this but why is this topic being trotted out and used as an argument with other fans of the same school? We all want app ranked but after reading the endless posts there’s lots of “but do you REALLY want app ranked”? I must admit I am impressed we can find ways to argue about this also. And if we aren’t arguing the merits of being ranked we are scolding other posters who don’t truly get how important it is. So if anyone is new to the board I just saved you 4 hours of reading Top 25 thread comments. Buy me a beer at the next game.

I just don’t think we should be ranked until after the construction is finished, now that we have all eyes on us, the fact that casual fans could look us up and see our track and a bunch of dirt holes in our end zone, I just think being ranked hurts us right now. Not to mention if they come to the games and Do not get a cup with ice in it or hear all of the rap music in between plays. Taking all of this into consideration, is being ranked good for us?Seattleapp wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 7:43 amJust so I’m clear, being ranked is a good thing? Re: ESPN: Biggest Question Remaining for Top 25- #21 App State
The reason so many people are stating the benefits of being ranked is because we've had to endure over and over again frequent posters who are constantly lecturing us fans not to get excited about being ranked and even that we shouldn't be ranked and how it'll jinx the team and god forbid we talk about a game other than the next one on the schedule.
These posters I'm referring to are major buzz-kills and don't seem to want us to get excited about the season until like week 10 or 11, or even at the end of the season because that's what really matters and too much can happen in football so why waste our time? I'm done with that sort of thing as I promise you, my posting something on this board has zero impact on the outcomes of games.

If we lose Saturday, it’s your fault Rick. Not to mention all of these posters who are predicting blowouts against SouthAlabama. It would be better if we win a game in a failed 2pt conversion to keep our guys humble and focused. Needs to be a 9-6 type of game.Rick83 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 7:56 amThe reason so many people are stating the benefits of being ranked is because we've had to endure over and over again frequent posters who are constantly lecturing us fans not to get excited about being ranked and even that we shouldn't be ranked and how it'll jinx the team and god forbid we talk about a game other than the next one on the schedule.

Dang I forgot to add that one. Yes fans posting on the board has no outcome on the games. That’s another thing I’ve read 5000 times, well now 5001

I agree that we, as fans and alumni, have no control over outcome on the field. But success on the field also creates expectations of future outcomes based on past results by these same people. Those expectations, when unmet, cause chaos and finger pointing without having a cogent understanding of the root cause for on the field performance. Being ranked is something to be excited about.

I know people will believe what they want to believe, but I would be shocked if the players took App lightly. Very possible App will be ranked in the teens for that game. Also, App won a road game over a team that SC last to on neutral field.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 10:09 pmI have always said being ranked is a good thing. Here is hoping they do over look us, but we will never know. App should expect to win this game this year. If App and SC played every year for the next 10 years, the prevailing thought would be SC wins 8 or 9 of them, but this year is one of those 1 or 2 years where App should expect to win.

There are monuments built in the Nevada desert based off the transitive property principle.

Not talking about some stupid transitive property. I dont think because App beat the holes, that means they will automatically beat SC. My point is SC can look at both a national ranking and a common opponent for their motivation and to not overlook App. Also, if SC wins next 2 they will be playing App to become bowl eligible. People on here who think SC will overlook App is wishful thinking.

Rankings mean nothing for our product on the field. It is just for marketing. I'm excited for having that but I know it means nothing for us. The rankings don't matter and won't be remembered if we are not there at the end of the season or not there regularly anyway.
Also, I don't like to jinx myself because the minute I start booking a trip to Cotton Bowl or brag about being ranked I'm sure we will lose.
I'm enjoying the ride but I know a lot has to happen. We just have to keep winning. The good press from the rankings is nice but once I see us in the CFP rankings and we are there at the end of the season I will truly get excited. A lot of teams who don't deserve sneak in for a week or two. We need to build a streak and become a brand name.
