Re: First BCS program to visit the ROCK?
Way too many folks posting on this based on emotion and assumptions. Use some critical thinking skills and do a little research fellas. Thanks for those who pointed out the only time we will pay teams is if there's no return game at their site. I expect a lot of home and homes against FBS peers such as MAC and CUSA teams. I would almost guarantee a visit to Huntington with the Herd also returning to Boone. I also anticipate a few home and homes with the bottom halves of BCS conferences. I don't expect any FCS opponents for several years after 2014 other than maybe Western or another former SoCon foe. As far as tickets prices go, Marshall charges $25 bucks for endzone/$35 for sidline seats. Most of the current Sun Belt teams charge less than we do for single game tickets. Sure, if we land a bigger opponent we'll likely charge more for that game. And why not? Heck, Montana's charging $55 for our game this year. ECU even charged more for our game. I do expect an increase in prices and hope it is gradual. But I don't see us charging $40-$45 across the board for some time.

Duke isn't coming. Heck, they won't even play us at Duke now, even though they play other FCS programs regularly.97APP wrote:I believe teams are typically paid for the un-returned game. It's the price we pay for having a top tier program travel up the mountain.JCline0429 wrote: A two for one, would be sacrificing one of the two home gates we could have had versus some other team.If we host a home game vs almost anybody at $40 a ticketas one poster just implied, that is a gross of $1.2 million if our attendance was near 30,000.
Getting back to the original post my bet would be Maryland. Close enough that travel isn't horrible and not rich enough to buy 4 home OOC games. I could also see: Miss State, Duke, Ole Miss, U Conn and Indiana. Probably in that order.

You may be right but I think the risk/reward of playing us has moved in our favor since we're now going to be FBS. I wouldn't exactly lay money on it though.

Honest question...what would be the reward for Duke.....the chance of winning? They would be winning over a program newly "inducted" into FBS.

It would be better than losing to Richmond again.

Whether or not they come to Boone, I hope we can get the series going again with Wake. This was one of the things I was most excited about regarding the move. I loved those game. The whole side filled with App people. Now it would be even more pronounced. We would take over that stadium.

Yes, we won over WFU seven times and tied them once. I was at all 21 or 22 games whatever it was.canes_mj wrote:Whether or not they come to Boone, I hope we can get the series going again with Wake. Obviously, I was speaking to the possible rewards for Duke, not us. Sure, I would rather lose to Duke than Richmond, but I'd wager a dollar to a donut that Richmond could have beaten the Blue Devils that year. I'm assuming you are speaking of our loss to Richmond.TheMoody1 wrote:JCline0429 wrote:Honest question...what would be the reward for Duke.....the chance of winning? Considering the lack of performance of the Herd in recent years, they may be "skeered" to venture down I-77.goapps93 wrote:Way too many folks posting on this based on emotion and assumptions. Re: First BCS program to visit the ROCK?
I think the only reason one of those teams isn't on our schedule is because we made the jump so late. Just look at the teams they are already going too. I think another reason may be that we aren't getting ourselves out there enough and making the calls necessary for this(this could be wrong). I think the second comment is a very good reason why you will see ACC teams coming to Boone within the next 3-4 years.

End of story.
And State won’t be the last ACC team to come to Norfolk.
ODU joins the Football Bowl Subdivision, and Conference USA, beginning in 2014. In recent years, C-USA schools have had much success is persuading ACC, and even some SEC and Big 12, to play them on the road.
That’s even true for the Sun Belt Conference, a league on a slightly lower rung than C-USA. Duke recently signed a home-and-home agreement to play Troy. N.C. State has a home-and-home deal with South Alabama. Wake Forest is going to Louisiana-Monroe.
In C-USA, Marshall has a home-and-home deal with Purdue. Florida International is hosting Maryland. Western Kentucky, which will join C-USA in 2014, hosts Kentucky in Nashville. Middle Tennessee State recently signed a four-year deal with Vanderbilt. Rice will be hosting Wake Forest and Texas-San Antonio plays at home against Oklahoma State."

On the other hand, a home-and-home with a Sun Belt or C-USA team costs you nothing, other than travel expenses, and allows you to keep every dime of your gate."

Re: First BCS program to visit the ROCK?
The reward is playing a team that counts towards bowl eligibility, is easy to travel to, and would create local fan interest. Duke tends to play FCS teams that are private and more like them in culture (or the occassional NCCU cross-town Durham community building exercise). In FBS they want games in which they feel they can be competitive in and can generate fan interest. I don't see this becoming an annual game by any means, but I can easily see us on each others schedule. This year they have Troy at home and travel to Memphis (part of a home and home). They have recently finished a home and home with FIU. They've shown a willingness to play at ECU, without political pressure.JCline0429 wrote:97APP wrote: You may be right but I think the risk/reward of playing us has moved in our favor since we're now going to be FBS. Re: First BCS program to visit the ROCK?
You and some others are discounting one of the primary reasons UNC and Wake Forest don't want to play us and especially come to KBS. That is that when they play us, they lose some credibility with potential recruits. When we played Wake Forest all those years, we often were able to sign some of the recruits who were on Wake's tentative lists. These athletes took into consideration that they had a chance to play immediately at App but might be down the line at Wake. Regardless, many were considering Wake but still signed with App, and/or kept the two on their lists to visit when without the contests, they might not have considered ASU and Wake in the same breath.appdaze wrote:I think the only reason one of those teams isn't on our schedule is because we made the jump so late. I think there could be an element of truth in what you are saying regarding Wake/App prospects and recruiting. However, if that was really a concern, why would they (Wake, UNC, Duke, etc.) schedule other FCS schools?

That is b/c the FCS schools are out of state and therefore not in the exact same recruiting area. ASU/UNC are competing for the some of the same in-state students but McNeese is not competing for NC students nearly as much when they visit Chapel Hill.appsfan wrote:I think there could be an element of truth in what you are saying regarding Wake/App prospects and recruiting. Re: First BCS program to visit the ROCK?
Why in the world would we want to go for lower goals and consider playing these in state jokes of programs? These are plain and simple basketball schools and only two of them are consistently relevent in that.
The eralier post showed that it is possible to get Big 12 and even some SEC schools to do home and home. If you want proximity, I'd much rahter have dumb ole rocky top than any school in the state. Also, there is a pretty good chance of setting one up with South Carolina. Screw tobacco road and their weak arse football.
