Run Blocking

Unread post by Saint3333 » Fri Nov 29, 2019 8:10 pm

I’m concerned about our run blocking. We aren’t getting any push from our oline on short yardage plays.

We have had problems with that for a good portion of the year. There are times we have big holes but it seem more times than not the defenders are meeting our backs behind the line of scrimmage.

Troy is also pretty good against the run. Their passing defense is horrible.

I think this was our game plan. Troy has a solid run defense so Drink dialed up the short and medium pass game. If you really paid attention you would have noticed when we needed a good run play we got it.

What else can people find to complain about?

Agree with Saint and understand the frustration, but our run game is built on zone blocking and zone stretch plays. Not brute force dives. Hard to have both. If you notice though our D is pretty good at stopping short runs on pressure plays too.

Drink himself did not sound completely satisfied post game, and that’s good. There is always room for improvement. So we shouldn’t point out deficiencies as we see them? Great game in most facets, but not every.

If we want to win next week we must run block better. If making football observations is now viewed as complaining this board has digressed considerably since the early 2000’s.

O Line was fantastic for the majority of the game. We are built for speed and zone blocking, so yes, short yardage situations will be tougher. Drink has to play call around that, it is what it is. Love the way Marcus is playing, he has been fantastic spelling Evans and keeping Evans fresh.

I don’t think it’s a “must” because we’ve been blocking like this for at least the second half of the season.
Evans had 52 yards on one run, and 30 on the other 12.
He’s probably had more negative yardage runs than any other back that will rush for over 1,000 this year.
We’re either not as good at zone blocking this year or teams are scheming better against it.
Imagine if he’d had the blocking that Marcus Cox or Jalen Moore enjoyed.
Consistent run blocking is probably our weakness.

I think this year we are good at exploiting other teams weaknesses, but struggle at imposing our will.

Are we a top 25 team? We didn’t win by a 60 point margin.

Oh and um, fire Ted Roof!

It's not that we aren't good at zone blocking. It's that we call more inside zones than years past. Inside zone is easier to scheme against to stop the run. Inside zone also opens up the passing game more since teams have to stack the box.

I say again and quote Coach Herman Boone in "Remember the Titans" with a little change: "Zone running is like novacaine. Give it a little time, it always works."
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.
