An Actual Football Discussion
Re: An Actual Football Discussion
I cant wait to see what Woody does with all this talent, he has got to be like a kid in the candy store. He has never had this kind of overall talent to work with, I bet he cant wait for spring practice. Does anyone know what day it begins?

Re: An Actual Football Discussion
Amongst all of the FBS talk, i thought it would good to bring back the actual football talk
good article on Rivals about our defensive progress, for those who have. mentions D-line specifically and an early 2 deep
Deuce-Bronson-Blair
Milhouse-Burns/Small-Singleton
As i thought might happen, Hall is at OLB for the time being but could go back to DE if he doesn't work out there

Saw that Denzel Ward from Vtech appears to be making an impact too. ANYbody stepping forward at LB is BIG.

saw that as well. he and john law could become a good ILB tandem for the next few years if they work their way onto the fieldGlassOnion wrote:Saw that Denzel Ward from Vtech appears to be making an impact too. ANYbody stepping forward at LB is BIG.

Hope so, a soph and a RsFr, would be together quite a while.
Did anyone notice Dada listed as a DL? Guess he 's a DE?

I saw that and that has to be a typo. he's only listed at 6'0 210. next smallest DE i can see is Singleton who is 6'3 245GlassOnion wrote:Hope so, a soph and a RsFr, would be together quite a while.

I dunno, Woody has had some odd lineups in his time... his DEs have 1 responsibility, getting to the QB.

Re: An Actual Football Discussion
With the FBS announcement behind us now, i'm curious to see if we bring in any FBS transfers that could help out immediately. A QB transfer could help provide some depth.
I also see the FBS decision now possibly making us a legit player Doug Middleton's brother who could be a beast at NT for us

Re: An Actual Football Discussion
I wonder how many schollies we will add this year and how many of those will be full rides going to guys who are getting partials now? In other words, will we go from 63 to 70 or 72 just by giving full scholarships, as required by FBS, to guys who might currently be getting only partials?
I also wonder if Satt will change the focus toward a different type of player? I saw some Texas St. fans on the Sun Belt board talking about how their coach had had to clean out some of their FCS guys to make room on the roster for FBS caliber players.
There are going to be some interesting decisions over the next few months.

Re: An Actual Football Discussion
If we've got 5 extra scholarships to give, I'd like to see 3 OL and 2 LB transfers. All from the SEC, and tranfserring because there is some future #1 draft pick playing ahead of them.
Im not going to settle for anything less.

Should be 5 new for 2013. 68 is the usual # for FCS transitional. You make a really good point about partials though.appst89 wrote:I wonder how many schollies we will add this year and how many of those will be full rides going to guys who are getting partials now? 2 guards and 1 tackle would be nice and 1 each of ILB and OLB. maybe look to Bama or UGA for some of those 3-4 LBsGlassOnion wrote:If we've got 5 extra scholarships to give, I'd like to see 3 OL and 2 LB transfers. Re: An Actual Football Discussion
As spring practice continues, a few things that I've noticed from the reports:
Havent heard anything from Davante Harris.
Denzel Ward seems to be a consistant contributor. Noticeable names that havent heard from at LB, are McGowan, Dada.
Satterfield seems very high on TEs.
Middleton and Barnes look huge, even when covering Price.
Deuce is back to exactly where he should be, (last year I was excited to see him at OLB, but this year, Im relieved he'll be back to rushing the QB,) we can call that experiment an oops.
Fergerson seems to be in the lead at RB, a surprise.
It looks like Greg Hall is going to be a good one.
PS, Kudos for Woody trying Blaylock at OLB.

From what i've read, there seems to be some injuries at LB so that might be why we've not heard much about McGowan, Dada, or Frazier.GlassOnion wrote:As spring practice continues, a few things that I've noticed from the reports:

From the Rivals article that was put up about our D-line, it looks like Harris has been buried on that depth chart.
Covington seems to be as advertised. Rivals posted a photo gallery and there was a picture of Covington covering Peacock, so it looks like he might getting the look at CB. Him and Blackmon at CB could be a dangerous combo (in a good way).
Interesting to hear that Ferguson is performing the way he is. Not to knock him, but it is kind of disappointing that he beating out Holloway, who was our legit FBS pickup last year and from what the coaches were saying could have been the lead back had he not been redshirted
Is anyone going to the spring practice in Charlotte? I plan on making my way down there and to the spring game as well. Can't wait to see the new defense in action!

Re: An Actual Football Discussion
That photo album was nice to see. Our guys look huge. What a difference 4 years make.
I was out of the loop on reports for a few days, but I did read just a bit ago in the WSJ that both Frazier and Blaylock were doing good at OLB.
Also said that Holloway has been dinged up, and hasnt practiced much. Im glad that Fergerson is doing well though, we'll definately need the depth.
With as deep and strong as our DL is, it is a great time to break in out defensive backfield. 5 INT the other day is a great sign, without seeing them play, I imagine that alot of that is from the DL pressure.

Deuce, Blair and Lamm all look like beasts. You can tell they've spent a lot of time in the weight room this offseason.

Fisher and Counts are looking pretty massive as well.asumike83 wrote:Deuce, Blair and Lamm all look like beasts. You can tell they've spent a lot of time in the weight room this offseason.
After that uninformed thread on the SB board a week back, it will be nice to go into the first season in the Belt with all these mature seniors. App has inferior size and strength? Riight.
The DL looks strong and deep for the next 2 years, especially with Duece's quickness opposite of Blair. We're going to have a strong left side on the OL the next 2 years, so if Ledford can put together the right side, things will look mighty good for us. We'll be very experinced in the trenches in 2014, which is a very welcome development for sure.
