Our Friend: The Charlotte Observer

Unread post by Rekdiver » Mon Apr 29, 2013 11:29 am

I'm reading this rag Sunday and reviewing the draft. They have an AP story about NFL info in genreal. They take the time to mention Mellette being drafted in the 7th round........NOTHING about any other school. So I write Joe Person who covers the Panthers and ask why the Sports Editor chooses to let a byline in, in another area when the Observer isn't really read that much (Burlington) that talks about one player and doesnt even have any mention of area players that were drafted past rounds 1-3...other than Mellette. He does write me back and apologizes but I'm not sure how heartfelt that apology was. We'll see in the next several days. Where is our SID in following up on area papers? Im sure they send out press releases but you have to follow up and make sure they get in the larger papers.

There are two reasons the Observer refuses to cover AppState: We are recruiting competition for UNCC and we are a bigger, better national brand than Davidson. The same works for the Charlotte television stations. They will give more coverage to a UNCC practice than our first bowl win. Accept it and move on.

Makes you appreciate Tommy Bowman that much more, huh?

What annoys me is that UNCC fans complain about not getting enough coverage in the CO. That hack David Scott writes about the last time Brad Lambert had a BM for god sake.

Thank god for the REAL journalists at the WS Journal.

One exception must be noted:

WBTV Channel 3 is definitely pro-APP. John Carter sports an App tie on many days and always shows his App coffee mug. He is a proud alum and vocal supporter, on and off the air. Bob Inman (retired) was always an APP supporter, and actually spoke at a few graduations. I believe Steve Ohnasorge and David Rhew are App grads and/or supporters.
Lotsa love from Channel 3.

Agreed that the staff on WBTV are pro-App, but they still have more UNCC coverage than AppState coverage. Maybe it's just because of the "new" factor for the program. Or maybe I'm just being butthurt.

BTW, did the Observer even send anyone to our FBS announcement? From the (crappy) video feed, I just heard Tommy and some reports from Asheville and Boone.

WBTV got video footage and sent a guy who did interviews on campus & King St. as well as talked for a minute about the announcement while standing outside, on the suite level, with the hill in the background. However, only negative, ambivalent, and "we're in a sports conference?" interviews made the final cut. They closed the segment with aerial shots of the new UNCC stadium, talking about how App will now be able to compete on the same level as UNCC because we're moving up.

I understand those perspectives exist and that they may be more than just a few outliers, but it is extremely deceptive to exclude the excited perspective.

Don't worry.. our move to the FBS will increase our exposure in Charlotte.

 Good one Veg. I'm sure we'll have our own daily column in the Observer one day. Any way we could petition to be added to the Triad market? At least most of them cover us and all we have to compete against there is Wake. :D

Well if Judy Rose would ever grow a pair (maybe she already has one?) we could increase exposure by playing Charlotte with home and homes now that we've made the move.

Was that a claim? Charlotte only sees shades of blue, with a dash of red and orange.

No surprise that the hometown UNCC would get better coverage in a Charlotte paper than App. I see the same thing here in Atlanta with GaSt getting much more coverage than GaSo in the AJC. It's simply a matter of location. With the number of App alumni in the Charlotte area, one would think they would make more of a effort to cover App, but no one said sports editors were get marketers.

I think the discussion about who will get more coverage between App and UNCC is a moot point. Coverage goes UNC, NCST, Duke, Wake Forest, East Carolina, App or UNCC. All those teams will get the majority of the coverage. We are talking about the back page of the observer, one or two paragraphs, does it really matter if App or UNCC is on page 9 instead of page 10?

Lotsa love from Channel 3.

Delano Little sure isn't and he's the main sports guy. He's GSU all the way.

He's usually drunk anyway. Most every anchor at WBTV will represent for their team when there is a big game. All in fun. App has them all outnumbered at Channel 3. The Disturber is another story. Those baby blue a-holes love to bury everything non-ACC to the point you think you are looking for Waldo. They'll find a way to run a UNC-Duke basketball story in July.

Here's more fodder for the Observers obsession with UNC-CH - this is an article headline from the website:

UNC, USC game will turn Charlotte into a college town

This moust especially sting for UNCC fans!

Also, there's nothing about Davidson going to the A-10.

we have seen first hand for many, many years how the Charlotte media treats the ACC teams, especially Carolina, and everyone else. Its going be a shock to the UNCC fans when Sunday morning, they find a one paragraph recap of their game on page 9 of the observer.

UNCC football may turn Harrisburg into a college town.

I'm also interested to see how much coverage the disturber gives the harrisburg team on a regular basis after the novelty/honeymoon phase. I just don't see them kicking their beloved heels to the back of the bus.
