Re: NEW UNIFORMS!!!
Sorry about getting excited there but tradition is so important and I talk to so many younger fans who have no idea what the program was like prior to Jerry Moore. When the school allowed Mike Working to take Yosef - and I didn't care for the early 80's version either - off the helmets then change from old gold to athletic gold when Mack Brown came in, it destroyed any connection to the past. It would be like Arkansas taking the hog off the helmet and replacing it with an A then changing their color to more orange than red.ASU-FTW wrote:Hey, calm down now. Re: NEW UNIFORMS!!!
I'm not trying to be mean here, but that's what happens as you get older: the younger generations start making something their own and beginning their own traditions. You can't expect for the throwback Yosef to be used forever, just as we can't expect for the current Yosef head to be there forever. Things change, and though it might not be what everybody likes, it's typically for the best.
Changing all of our uniforms is a good thing. It shows we are committed to the jump we will soon be making. Though the block A isn't my favorite, it is cool to see some other renditions of it. Just because it is a little bit different on our football uniforms does not mean that we have completely lost our identity and tradition.

Re: NEW UNIFORMS!!!
I really like this post, as for me I just graduated in December and its amazing to see all the changes that are happening so quickly, but I will say I LOVE the new uniforms and think they look awesome. I had a feeling this was coming when they had that big jersey sale a few months ago. They were selling jerseys all the way back from 2007 and I am so glad I bought a Black #12 from my last year at APP. (Pictured below) So who knows maybe 15 years down the road when the jerseys have changed again I can show mine off to some new fans who are envious of my "old school" jersey. Because I know when I came to App I really liked the Jerseys from back in 04 and thought it would be so cool to own one. But thats just my opinion. Im glad to see App trying out some new stuff and I am REALLY glad we have taken it slow and let some other schools dive in head first, for example Oregon, Maryland and also Indiana with their new striped helmet. Not to say I think those schools have made a mistake by any means I am just glad we are not jumping straight into the deep end of the uniform trend. But I think my favorite part of the uniform changes throughout college football is the way teams have tried to utilize the past as well. Like when Texas AM wore all black against Miss State last year for their famous "Snow Bowl" game, and I don't know about y'all but when I saw the new all black jersey with white pants I immediately thought of some older games from App State. But anyway in conclusion I think the uniforms look great and CANNOT wait to see them on the field.8993 wrote:I'm not trying to be mean here, but that's what happens as you get older: the younger generations start making something their own and beginning their own traditions. It interesting to me how schools like LSU, Southern Cal, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, ... you get the idea, seem to do just fine with keeping the same tired old logos and colors. Guess they haven't come to the realization it would be "for the best" for them to make changes. BTW, it's not a throwback Yosef.8993 wrote:I'm not trying to be mean here, but that's what happens as you get older: the younger generations start making something their own and beginning their own traditions. Re: NEW UNIFORMS!!!
Part of the issue with the 'Bamas and Auburns and, yes, the North Carolinas of the world is that they already have a national identity. The 'Bama "A" with the little curve on top is iconic. No one would tell you to replace that "A" with the elephant just as no one would suggest replacing the AU logo for Auburn with the war eagle.
So far, Appalachian State doesn't really have a national "brand". We're poised to take a bold step toward being a more strongly recognized university on the national level. This goes well beyond football uniforms and athletics. It's about the entirety of Appalachian State. For that reason, it's important to have a logo (or brand, if you will) that is not subject to the vicissitudes of style that a mascot like Yosef must endure.
It makes great sense to me to use the block "A" - yellow or gold or white or black - as the constant and consistent emblem of the Appalachian State brand. The Yosef mascot is just that - a mascot. Use whatever Yosef the current style dictates. Keep the block "A" solid and stable and linked to every facet of the great university we know as Appalachian State.

Uniform and logo changes provide a definite boost to merchandise sales. Lots of folks will buy new gear just to have the new logos. Look at all the alternative NFL/MLB/NBA uniforms and the new sales they generate.

I beg to differ. The media frenzy and Sports Illustrated cover shot following the biggest upset in college football history instantly provided ASU with national brand awareness. Now we are going to change a logo that is so recognizable. That win did far more for ASU's national exposure than going into the SunBelt will.
I've been in sales and marketing for 30 years and have seen these types changes derail successful companies. One of the worst marketing mistakes a company - or school in this case - can ever make is altering or replacing a logo that has been long identifiable with success. A logo change is like firing a coach. It is intended to signify a break from a less than successful period. Mack Brown changed the entire uniform to separate his program from the disastrous Working years. We are making a change following a 25 years period most schools would do anything to have enjoyed. This is a very risky move.

Love"em or hate'm, they DID get featured on CBSsports.com. However, the pictures only showed the gray unis and Yosef helmet.

I see it a little differently. Yes, the Michigan win did more to boost the profile of our program than the SBC move or any of the national championships. But, that win was also six years ago and the memory of the general public is pretty short.Kgfish wrote: I beg to differ. They remember the name but I'm not sure how many remember the uniforms or logo. Schools like Alabama, Penn State, USC, etc. are a different animal. Those logos and uniforms have been on the cover of Sports Illustrated regularly for the past 40 years. When it comes to recruiting, Alabama and Southern Cal take phone calls, we make phone calls.
To be clear, I prefer the existing white Block A as well but I can understand the change as we enter a new era of App football. Changing it up keeps the App State name out there and more importantly, the players and recruits love it. Keeping the Yosef alternate uniforms in the rotation as an ode to our history is also a good thing, IMO.

Yet another wise use of money by our institutions of higher education. Appalachian State's athletic department is already going to be running a significant, multi-million dollar debt by making the move to Division I-A. Intelligent of them to waste even more money with wild, expensive uniforms. And then someone somewhere will be complaining that non-revenue sports are the real reason why they can't break even. Bull.

Is it a coincidence Western is in the county right next to Haywood County, the name of poster #1?

Re: NEW UNIFORMS!!!
We need to find one and stick with it, it's hard to establish identity if we keep changing it around every 3 or 4 years. Should have just stayed with the uniforms we wore in Michigan in my opinion. When was the last time the nationally recognized schools changed their look, specifically the helmet design?

Sorry, I know that that Yosef was the one used years ago, but the mascot picture has evolved. That IS the throwback/retro Yosef, as another Yosef picture is currently used by the athletics department.Kgfish wrote:It interesting to me how schools like LSU, Southern Cal, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, ... you get the idea, seem to do just fine with keeping the same tired old logos and colors. I really like all the new uniforms. The matte black helmets are down right awesome. I would put the white background block "A" back on the helmets and use the black background block "A" once a year on "Black Saturday" with all black uniforms. I believe all of App Nation would embrace it when used this way. It certainly would only add to the excitement of "Black Saturday" in the High Country.
