Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
In an interview Nick Saban quoted as saying he told two players to look elsewhere because of NIL demands. One high school student asked Saban to get his girlfriend into Alabama law school and pay her tuition. A representative of another went to Saban and asked if Alabama would pay him $800k. Saban told him “he can find another place to play”.
The cash request is what it is…but now NIL has progressed to players asking for preferential treatment and tuition for their girlfriends.
You pro NIL folks, justify that for me.

Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
Seems like asking for preferential admission and tuition for a girlfriend goes FAR beyond the concept of NIL. To be clear, I'm not a huge fan of NIL in the unstructured way it was rolled out. I do think there was a need to allow NIL in some form but don't really have a firm recommendation on how I think it should work. This seems to be a different type of discussion though.

Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
Had the NCAA not stuck their heads in the sand on this they could’ve established rules allowing student athletes to accept certain types of NIL opportunities not to exceed a set dollar amount per academic year.
The only way to put this toothpaste back in the tube is to allow collective bargaining on behalf of student athletes. A handful of player reps - former and current athletes - have to be a part of the governing decisions or they absolutely will not accept them. Why would athletes who have been making unlimited money agree to less money? They won’t…unless they’re a part of the decision making process.
There needs to be a list of opportunities with set dollar figures attached to each of them and a single academic year revenue cap. Collectively bargain what those opportunities are (tv commercials, merch signings, social media posts, etc etc) and the cap. Then employ legitimate watch dogs at each university who’s job it is to weed out violations and additional under-the-table payments.
A framework for capturing NIL isn’t hard at all, it’s getting players to buy into that framework. You have to make them a part of the process or they’ll never accept it.

Just like the Methodist Church went through....the split is coming. Each school will have to decide if they are going unlimited NIL or who is going to have set rules. I think the academic side will win out eventually. Best college football team money can buy is the new mantra. From the NIL supporters angle we already had the best college football team on spending the most on coaches....why not players too.

Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
If you add up all of the college football and basketball players from every D1 (FBS in football) how many realistically are getting any real NIL money? I would have to think it's a small percentage. I'm really not a fan simply because it was rushed through and is jacked up. There have always been sleezy characters who have funneled money and stuff to star athletes to entice them to play at a certain school. Some got caught but I'm sure many didn't. If some 18 year old kid thinks he or she is the shit and also thinks he or she can get a huge payday then he or she probably doesn't need to be in school to begin with. While the schools are making a fortune on "the backs" of the athletes those athletes aren't absolutely entitled to massive paydays. NIL is proving that there is no real equitable solution .

Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
That’s not NIL. Asking for a spot and tuition paid for someone else isn’t getting paid for someone to use your Name, Image, or Likeness. That’s someone trying to get preferential treatment because they think they’re good enough at football to demand it. Good on Saban, and every other school that doesn’t cave to these types of demands.APPdiesel wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 11:46 amIn an interview Nick Saban quoted as saying he told two players to look elsewhere because of NIL demands. That’s very different from a brand paying a player to be a sponsor for their product, for the player to receive proceeds from jersey sales of their names jersey, or being in a commercial.
I don’t care if student-athletes are sponsors for brands or get paid for their name and image to be used. We all deserve to own our name and image, regardless of being student-athletes on scholarship.

Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
I was all for NIL if it is true NIL if the school would coordinate it and players got a cut from the sales that used their NIL or for them to do a commercial. I'm not for it being like this. It is ruining the game and going to get to a point where players will take demands public and alienate fans one day. I think these boosters who pay this are stupid and need to start telling players no. The problem is we have idiots willing to do this stuff and it just fuels more players to want to ask for it. I said on here prior to all of this that I am okay with true NIL and was against paying to sign a player and all this extra stuff. I thought we needed strict rules and guidelines when this started or else it would be a mess. It is indeed a mess right now.APPdiesel wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 11:46 amIn an interview Nick Saban quoted as saying he told two players to look elsewhere because of NIL demands. Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
I don't really have a problem with the labor force demanding to get paid what they think they are worth. Either they get it or they don't and they accept a lower deal. Asking to get his girlfriend in is fraud and the Laughlin's lawyer might want to talk to this moron of a young adult.
I have no problem with these adults asking for monetary payment. The NIL situation will work itself out in the long run as the market becomes more stable and value of ability is categorized. This is no different than other adults getting poached/recruited by other companies and negotiate salaries and benefits. Y'all can call it ruining it all you want to but that doesn't change the fact that adult athletes should be getting paid to play for a national organization that rakes in billions. The NIL is capitalism taking hold. Just because someone chooses to go to college shouldn't mean they miss out on earning money from their labor. That was always about taking advantage of the labor and nothing else. The idea of amateurism was a joke from day 1. They sold that idea brilliantly.
The only solution that would curb stomp this whole issue is if the NFL created a true minor league system like the other major sports. Then all these adults could take their skills there and get paid leaving the rest to go to college. You'd still have some of the NIL business floating around but it would be far less.

NIL should never have been a part of the school or school contracts...it should have been exactly like when I was in school. If I wanted to contract with a company to be a spokesperson for Makato's Japanese Steak house and Makato's wanted to pay for Name, image and likeness of SPACEMONKEY .....good for both Spacemonkey and Makato's but should not have had anything to do with APPSTATE....unless I wore Appstate paraphernalia or used words as if AppState also endorsed Makato's.
Armanti Edwards should have been allowed to line up contracts to be paid for NIL of Armanti Edwards...As soon as he says "Armanti Edwards quaterback of the Appalachian State Mountaineers" then it becomes a contract with Armanti and APP STATE.

Ehh that's not quite how things work. Plenty of athletes in the pro world do commercials and say hey I'm ______ of the ______ here to tell you about Viagra. Those guys aren't working their contracts through their teams.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 2:39 pmNIL should never have been a part of the school or school contracts...it should have been exactly like when I was in school. When it comes to representation and using school name and gear while you work your NIL contract the thing I will be interested to see how it pans out is what the difference will be using a state institution vs private.

I think the Dr. Pepper commercial with Bryce Young is a perfect example. He wears the standard Dr. Pepper colors. He's referred to by his name but not as Alabama QB. He is repping the cola but not the school.appdaze wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 2:46 pmEhh that's not quite how things work. Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
I think college players should be paid, but there needs to be a cap. All pro teams have a cap; there needs to be something to limit college.
Also Football is more out of control than other sports. We talk about baseball and basketball leaving earlier or foregoing college for minor league. Outside of a signing bonus, most of these guys are making <50k per season. It’s kind of nuts we have 4 star players who may not contribute in college getting that to play for a school.

An individual pro player has no cap on advertising/sponsor income. He/she can pitch an unlimited amount of products, etc
On the above commentary in regards to in reference to "Hi my name is and I am with .." I believe this typically happens when the product/service also sponsors the team or league. In the State Farm commercials, does Rogers state that he plays for GB Packers. I may be wrong, however I believe the pro sports league would want in on the deal if a player is referring to the team or league.

Re: Nick Saban crusading to save CFB.
Thoughts on players getting paid 60-80 per hour for work everyone else in the company is getting 10-12 for. If you don't think that this was going on in the SoCon you would be 100% wrong. Are we a free market country or not? How is "capping" ones earning potential not a soft form of socialism? Food for thought across the board. Might NIL in its current form ruin much of what we love about CFB, sure. But think about non football ramifications if we curtail it. We don't get to pick and choose where we think they concepts should apply.

This is true . But, you also don’t see a lot, if any, of these deals going to mediocre players nfl players. also, you don’t see these deals put in place to load up a team; at least not initially. NIL in college is quite ridiculous with zero guidelines.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 4:29 pmAn individual pro player has no cap on advertising/sponsor income. Also, Saban is playing chess. He’s always thinking 2-3 steps ahead. He isn’t just telling somebody a story, he’s sending a message to any and every other player that thinks they can come to Alabama and ask for whatever they want. And he’s sending a message to every other coach that “we are still in charge here. We can say ‘no’ to whatever and whoever we want. We just all have to have the same standard.”
