There is no doubt that there were first downs if he ran, that turned into less than positive plays. The second lateral pass against Wyoming is an example. I think he could have tucked it and slid for a couple more first downs each game. As spacemonkey said, just pulling the ball and running off tackle past a crashing defensive end would cause the defense to play our run differently.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 3:21 pmMost of them I have been fine with.. there have been 2 or 3 3rd downs and 2 4th downs that I had wished he would have run...but, Easy for a fan on a couch to say.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 3:09 pmAnd nothing against our QB3, but we may be running less from that position because we are already at QB2. There's been times when he's had open field and still pulled up to pass the ball. Could be his style or that could be by design to limit hits.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 1:50 pmJoey has said himself, in interviews, that he is a pass first QB ...will run if he needs to. Thinking that maybe his past is not read option. .or he gave it to RB most times if read option.AppDub wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 1:18 pmPretty sure we ran it last week against ULM. Joey just rarely if ever keeps it. Lot of space ahead if he does. Not sure that was part of his game at Diablo Valley. May be wrong.CharlotteApp05 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 12:12 pm
Both of our qbs can run this year. It seems like over the course of CB years they forgot that we used to run a really good read option. I don’t really recall our qb doing it yet this year. If he will read the edge, that end can’t crash it every time. This is what was missing vs Wyoming. If we ran read option we win by 21.

I'm glad he threw to the 39 yard line on the 2nd last play of the game instead of running.....

See, if it had been at anytime during the game I think that is the right call. If your QB can advance the ball further with the pass dont subject him to a season ending hit.

I do expect this to be a frustrating season where we see both good and bad. I will say though that is am 100% positive that Gillin will make a change if we go 6-6. After falling apart last year I don't think Gillin would accept 6-6. If we had gone 9-3 last year then Clark would be able to keep his job with a 6-6 record.
As disappointed as I am at this point, I hope you are wrong. The promise of next year is there. If we go 6-6 this year, I think next year will be
my limit. We wii have 4 years invested in Sean and I really want him to succeed. I do see glimmers of coaching ability. After next year there will be no buy-out. ( even though 1 mil ain’t what it used to be it’s still a lot of dough). I worry that we can go 3-4 the rest of the way as average as we are in close games and the rest of our games, in all likelihood, are toss-ups.

Let's be honest here....If Im DG I'm not going to spend $1.0 million on a buyout unless SC agrees to a multi year payout. IMO he plays out the contract and saves 1.0 mil that we will need for the next guy.

Re: Reset
I was just looking at some Patrick Mahomes highlight reels on YouTube yesterday and was thinking, he is always looking for the pass until he can't. That is much like what I see with JA. When a QB has the zip and confidence JA has then he tries to use the pass to his advantage up until that last second (barring a called run for QB) and then he tucks and runs. The key to an offense like ours is to get the ball to the playmakers whenever possible.

Re: Reset
I think the momentum we'd lose bringing back a clearly lame-duck SC after another 6-6 season would cost us much more than a million.
*I hope we win every damn game left on the schedule this year and this isn't an issue.

If we can’t find $1M, or are worried about spending it for the next guys salary, we have major issues. That’s pocket change in the college football world today. (Not saying they should fire him or anything like that!!!)

I was about to say the same thing. I want to see this year play out but if we fall below a certain level, I hear we have certain boosters ready and willing to spend it.

Re: Reset
I don't think raising the $1M would be a problem if App goes 6-6. This isn't poor little ol App State anymore, despite what many want to believe.
Also, per the contract, Clark would be due the full amount in 90 days, IIRC.
FWIW, I hope all this doesn't happen. I want Clark to succeed because that means App State succeeds. Firing him for losing games means it was a failure and isn't a celebration.

That is how I hope most people feel. We will easily have the money but I hope we don't have to because it would mean we failed. If we do go 6-6 I think some folks will be surprised how fast the money is given to do the buyout.T-Dog wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 8:47 amI don't think raising the $1M would be a problem if App goes 6-6. Re: Reset
I really hate these never ending what if and doomsday scenarios. That being said IF we do go 6-6 it's more than likely a situation where we win the next 3- should be favored, and somehow lose the last 4. Those last 4 includes the Ga teams. If that epic meltdown were to happen it's hard to justify not making a change. Do we actually get/accept a bowl bid? Barring significant injuries to key players it's really hard to see 3 straight wins followed by 4 straight losses.

I really prefer to see how things play out because the only thing I am sure of is a 6-6 finish means a change. These next 3 are important. We have to win them or else we probably are looking at 6-6 or 7-5. We need to make a good statement tomorrow night!Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 9:59 amI really hate these never ending what if and doomsday scenarios. Re: Reset
Barring absolute calamity, I don't see a 6-6 season. This team has competed hard this year. A couple of mistakes on key plays cost us against Wyoming but it wasn't because the team no-showed. A travel shortened week to prep for ULM combined with a two week prep for them looked like a no-show but the team kept fighting and found a way. Yeah, ugly but it's a win.
We have tough games ahead but I don't see anybody we can't beat. JMU and Marshal look good but neither is dominant looking. Georgia State looked scary until Troy drew a map of how to handle them. Honestly, Georgia Southern makes me more nervous than anyone on the schedule. I hate giving them the credit. That should be a good game but I think this team is hungry and will continue to improve.
I really liked what Horn said in his interview last week. His goal is a championship. I think this team has their eye on the prize. Sure hope we can get there. GO APPS!

I agree that there is not a game we can't win, except maybe JMU, but on the flip side there is only 1 that I am 99% sure we win right now. The rest of them are going to be very tough.Yosef84 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 10:47 amBarring absolute calamity, I don't see a 6-6 season. This team has competed hard this year. I will say that if we somehow win the SBC in 2023 that I feel that is a bigger accomplishment than winning it in 2019. This league is extremely tough. It is definitely the best G5 league now.

So, now we can't beat JMU? Why? We played toe-to-toe with Carolina and had JMU down 28-3 last year, plus we're an improved team this year. Are you serious?AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 6:05 pmI agree that there is not a game we can't win, except maybe JMU, but on the flip side there is only 1 that I am 99% sure we win right now. I said maybe because I don't think we can turn the ball over like we have been and still beat them. They are a very good team and we will have to play a lot better on offense. I think we lose for sure if we play like we did against ULM and Wyoming.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 8:37 pmSo, now we can't beat JMU? Why?
