Visiting boone....

Hi all!

Me and a buddy are taking a road trip throughout the south at the end of month. Kind of stopping at college towns the whole time. He's from boston so it'll be a whole new experience for him. I'm from Georgia and a MTSU fan so I'm hitting colleges I've never been to. Wanting to stop in boone for a night. Won't be on a gameday unfortunately but still excited. Always wanted to visit. Any suggestions on where to stay in boone? Eat? things like that. Where is the bar scene? Any info will be helpful. thanks

The Gonzo boiler plate of recommendations:


Food:
Portofino (get the spiced sirloin or the fried green tomorato BLT), Char, Black Cat(chicken enchiladas or the Don't be a Jerk Burrito), Coyote Kitchen (Get the Toas Boat, featured in Our State Magazine or the Caribbean Burger), Boone Bagelry, Comeback Shack, Mellow Mushroom (Red potato pie or Cosmic Karma). Woodlands in Blowing Rock (chopped pork BBQ, NC style like God intended), Joe's, Maccadoes. Boone is a mecca of good restaurants. Even if you stray from my list of personal favorites, you're bound to find something you like. (no particular order)

Bars:
Char (known by App students as Charbar), Paolucci's(known by App students as Pow or PowPow). These two are boni fide night clubs on Howard Street (one block closer to campus than King St). Friday night is 1,2,3 night at Paolucci's $.50 jello shots, $1 beers, $2 shots and $3 mixed drinks. Go here only if you're young (or young at heart) and you want to see some real craziness. Good luck getting a drink at Char or even getting in if it's past 11 pm.

Boone Saloon, Galaleo's, Murphy's, Porto's, Macadoes. These will be more your speed assuming that most of you travelers are a little older than 18-22. The consensus on AGS among older App fans is that Murphy's would suit you best, though the others are great.

tApp Room, Klondike, Parthanon, Town Tavern are gonna be 90% students as well but they're more dive type bars with really good specials and cool atmospheres. tApp room is my favorite. Klondike and Parthenon are the "Greek bars." Croakies and boat shoes required.

Other activities besides the game:
Downtown Boone (King St) is a must. The Mrs will LOVE the cool shops (Mast General Store, Farmer's Hardware ect). Blowing rock has good shopping and a ton of good restaurants too (about 20 minutes east). If you have kids they will enjoy the Linville Caverns which are located off of 221 (approx. 45 min. from Boone). Linville Falls is located off of 183. Howards Knob is a cool spot. It's the mountain that's right over town. Offers basically a topographical map of campus. Ziplines (Hawksnest, Screaming). Float one of the rivers (Wahoo Adventures) rents and drops you off at a point and picks you up (only do if it is warm with kids). Drive the Parkway (Price Park Lake, Viaduct, and other attractions close to Boone). These include hiking, fishing, and other things. Grandfather Mountain (swinging bridge and small zoo).

Pepper's - my wife lives for the Jean Lawson.

Mellow Mushroom is a multi-location restaurant. It is good and not a mega-chain but around the country. I would recommend Boone area exclusives such as Pepper's and Woodlands, if you want a slice of Boone. Not a big fan of Daniel Boone Inn but it is something that many feel they must do in Boone or at least that was the case years ago.

Wolly Worm festival is in Banner Elk October 19th and 20th.
I know you said the end of the month but just in case you come earlier. Kinda neat place to visit.

also, Peppers is great too. Love the Teriyaki Chicken Dip supreme with the provolone and canadian bacon. love Mellow Mushroom too, but no love for Hungry Howies?

Don't know about the bars anymore. they've all changed since I was in school there. still pissed Flipside is gone

Shoppes on the Parkway is nice to visit in Blowing Rock. used to work there in college, although it will be PACKED for the next month with all of the "leaf lookers"

Since your buddy is from Boston, I say Woodlands is a must. A good southern style breakfast is a good idea also. I recommend Mountain House for that (or Cracker Barrel, but it's a chain.) Also I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but go tour the stadium. It should be open for you to walk right in. If you go around to the parking lot behind the press boxes, you can go into the offices part and in front they have a room with a lot of championship memorabilia.

Go to Sunrise Grill on Highway 105, better than Mountain House & Cracker Barrel combined; but get there early or you'll have to wait for a while.

Also I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but go tour the stadium. It should be open for you to walk right in. If you go around to the parking lot behind the press boxes, you can go into the offices part and in front they have a room with a lot of championship memorabilia.

Ask for a tour and there is a good chance you can get one.

Our Daily Bread is also a good lunch spot. That was my go to between class lunch place being close to Raley (Jimmie Johns wasn't there)
